Chapter 66: The Talk? Yes! 3

Chapter 66: The Talk? Yes! 3

Vernon blinked his eyes. She was right... But why did feel that something wasn’t right?

Can this be done so easily as it just went?

Is he not dreaming?

He pinched his arm under the table to check and he winced in pain.

Okay, he wasn’t dreaming.

This was happening.

This was really happening.

Helena agreed to divorce.

Just like that.

"Really? Are you sure?" Vernon asked to be sure.

Helena nodded, "I don’t want to be with someone who doesn’t want me. It is not like I can’t find someone if I leave you, right?"

She casually shrugged.

"But," Helena said again.

Vernon stiffened. (Here comes the but. I knew it was too good to be true. There is no way she would let me go just like that, right?)

Vernon couldn’t come out of his trauma from his previous life. He couldn’t forget the way Helena had rejected the idea of divorce at that time. So, he couldn’t accept the thought that Helena would agree to divorce him this time either.

"But?" Vernon asked her to continue.

"But, you have to deal with our families. I don’t want anything to do with both of our families. I don’t know how they will react or what questions they will ask. Anyway, since the divorce is your idea, I think you should deal with them as well. I don’t want to get involved in this mess. Also, you have to make sure to keep my side of the story clean. I don’t want any stain on my ’past’. Do you understand what I mean?" Helena asked.

Vernon blinked his eyes. "That’s all?"

He understood what Helena meant. Since he asked for the divorce, he should make sure that no one would point their finger at her for the divorce.

That was a legible request.

After all, after their divorce, she should move on with another person in the future.

Helena nodded, "Yes. That’s all."

Vernon nodded, "Sure. I will take care of our families and also the reason."

"Then fine." Helena did not look like she cared much about this matter at all.

Vernon did not understand why she looked so casual about the entire ordeal.

"Can I ask you something?" Vernon asked.

Helena gave a nod.

"Why do you look so casual about this matter? I mean, it is marriage after all. It is our - I mean - your life’s matter. Don’t you feel bad about this at all?" He asked in seriousness and pure curiosity.

He couldn’t understand at all.

Helena tilted her head to the side, thinking carefully about his question.

After a long time, she calmly and casually shook her head, "Nope."

She meant she did not feel bad about this at all.

From her thoughts, he was sure that she wasn’t lying either. She was speaking her true thoughts this whole while.

He was getting more and more confused.

"Why?" He couldn’t help but ask.

"What do you mean by why?" Helena asked with a frown.

"Why don’t you feel bad? I mean, how can you treat this matter so casually?"

"Vernon," Helena looked at him seriously and continued, "How exactly do you want me to react?"

Vernon was stunned. He opened his lips to speak but before he could utter a word, Helena continued, "Do you want me to beg you to let me stay by your side?"

Vernon was stunned once again. He shook his head, "No. That wasn’t what I meant."

"Then?"

"I just can’t understand how you treated divorce as casually as a small trip to a park. This is supposed to be a big event in both our lives. I thought you would feel bad. Even if you did not care about staying with me, I thought you would treat this matter more seriously than how you are right now." Vernon spoke. He pursed his lips at the end.

He was happy with the result. But he was confused by the entire process. He wanted to know her thoughts.

Also what exactly was different from his previous life and this life?

Why was she so okay with the divorce now but absolutely not in the previous life?

Helena looked at him with a frown for a couple of minutes.

She took the glass of cold water on the table and gulped some.

After placing the glass back on the table, she leaned back in her chair and looked back at him. "Vernon. Did we get married?"

"Huh? What do you mean?"

"What I mean is... think carefully about our wedding day to our present moment. When have you had the feeling that we were actually married?

"Even though I don’t like Faye or her absurd words, I suddenly feel like she was right about one thing. You married me because your parents forced you to. Am I right?" Helena asked him.

Vernon stiffened. But he immediately shook his head, "No. Helena. I did not marry because anyone forced me to. You know that as well. Why are you talking like this now?"

"It was because that was how you have been behaving all these days," Helena stated calmly.

Vernon felt someone clench his heart when he heard her words.

He shook his head.

His forehead started to sweat. Even the back of his neck was sweating profusely.

No. That wasn’t the case.

He wasn’t forced to marry her.

No matter what, he would never agree to these words.

Because the meaning of his marriage to Helena would completely change with this single word.

Forced?

No!

No one forced him. Who did?

The parents had arranged the marriage. Yes! But they also asked Vernon and Helena when they turned adults for their opinions.

Only after they both agreed did both the families proceed with their marriage.

"Helena," Vernon called her name out softly.

Helena looked at him. She raised her hand to stop him from speaking, "Please don’t say anything. Anyway, it is not like we were even in a relationship. At most, we got a marriage certificate."
