Chapter 67: The Talk? Yes! 4
"Anyway, it is not like we were even in a relationship. At most, we got a marriage certificate.
"We have been friends for so long. Even if you don’t like me, I won’t cry for you. But, we should strategize properly so that our divorce wouldn’t affect the stocks of both our companies.
"When we divorce, we should make a plan that could help our stock price increase but not the other way around. Do you understand what I am saying?"
Vernon looked at her without blinking his eyes. He slowly frowned. He then asked, "Except for business, you don’t have anything else to talk about?"
Helena’s brows knitted together, "What do you want me to talk about? Don’t tell me, do you think I am head over heels for you and I should fall on your feet and stop you from leaving me?"
Even though her words sounded sarcastic, her expression and her tone did not sound sarcastic at all. Instead, she looked genuinely confused and wondered.
Vernon looked at her. He observed her expressions and concentrated on listening to her inner voices.
Everything told him that she was genuinely thinking about both their businesses and nothing else. She was talking about what she was thinking. She wasn’t hiding or scheming anything.
"Can I ask you something?" He asked again.
"What is it?"
"Did you ever like me? Like ever?" Vernon asked.
Helena tilted her head, "Huh? What a silly question! Of course I like you. I liked you in the past and I like you in the present as well. Why do you even doubt that?"
Vernon did not reply. He just blinked his eyes.
Helena looked at his face for a few seconds and seemed to understand what he was thinking.
She chuckled and shook her head.
"Vernon, you silly man! I like you. Yes! But I don’t love you. You know that liking someone and loving someone is completely different, right?" Helena asked with a smile.
Vernon continued blinking his eyes.
Helena laughed lightly when she saw that. "I like you. It was because you are a good man and my good friend. I like you. So, whenever you need me, I will always be there for you. I like you because we get along well. Very well.
"But, love?" Helena shook her head. "I don’t love you. We had never dated even for a day. I never saw you as my lover. You never treated me as a woman. You always treated me as a friend. So, how could I have the feelings that I should have towards a man when I look at you?
"Being a friend and being a lover are two completely different things. Please don’t mix them up.
"They are mutually exclusive to each other. I can like you even if I did not love you. Similarly, I can love you even if I did not like you. Do you understand?"
Vernon looked like he just entered a parallel dimension. "I seem to understand but also not. I don’t know exactly."
Helena laughed again. Her pearly white teeth exposed, her voice rang like bells chiming in the wind.
"It’s fine even if you don’t understand. Anyway, I like you. Even if we divorce in the future, I will still like you as my friend. It was because you are still trying to be a good friend to me. As my friend, I never had too many expectations from you. As long as we live cordially together, that is what would matter to me." She calmly said.
Vernon seemed to be enlightened.
In other words, she had treated him as her friend until now. Never her husband.
If he started behaving as her husband, then she might start treating him the same as well.
Since he never treated her as his wife, she never treated him as her husband either.
As he was nothing but a good friend to her, she never had any expectations from him.
She did not care if he wanted to sleep with her or not. She did not care if he wanted to divorce her or not. She did not care if he wanted to be with her or not. She did not care about any of these.
But if he treated her as his wife, then she would have definitely started treating him as her husband.
Then the matter would have been completely different.
She would have cared about why he wanted to divorce her and why he would pretend to sleep every night and why he never wanted to be intimate with her.
Since both of them had treated each other as good friends, the requirements of their relationship had changed as well.
There were never any feelings involved in their relationship until now.
Neither he loved her nor did she.
With no feelings involved, what would be left of their marriage?
Only two things.
The first being their friendship and the second being the business partnership between the Jeffery’s and the Ford’s.
When it came to their friendship, Helena treated Vernon as her good friend from start to the end.
She saw him suffering because of their marriage and wondered what exactly was going on with him. That was why she reached out to Tristan and asked him what was going on with him. That was what any good friend would do.
Even if he asked for a divorce, she would not say no because to her, he was still her friend. If her friend felt suffocated to be in a different relationship with her, she would just let him go. That way, they can still go back to their previous relationship- friends- without worrying too much.
Yes, they got married. But, so what? They never had any romantic feelings for each other. At most, she can treat their entire wedding as a small event organized by both their families to help boost their businesses.
There is nothing to worry too much about that at all. That was really what she thought.
