Chapter 25: Manly? No!

Once she had hung up on the phone, he asked her directly, "What are you searching for?"

Helena was stunned for a second. She did not expect Vernon to ask her that. She thought he wanted to distance himself from her. She had felt that from him since their wedding.

[Should I tell him? Would it impose him in any sort? I don’t want to trouble him, though.]

Vernon had already felt that Helena always tried to keep him out of ’trouble’ so that he would maintain his ’purity’ and wouldn’t be ’tainted’ by the darkness of the world.

He couldn’t understand why she would have the feeling that he is so pure and doesn’t understand the world outside.

He felt upset that his wife looked down on him even though he also knew that that wasn’t her intention.

He looked at her seriously and said, "Helena, no matter what, we are husband and wife right now. Our lives are now entangled with each other, and it will be so for a long time. If we couldn’t even share our worries with each other, then what is the reason for this relationship? You should start treating me as your confidante and not a kid who should be kept away from all your troubles. Do you understand what I am saying?"

Maybe this was the mistake he had made in his previous life? Was it because he had not seen how his wife had been treating him that they slowly turned distant, and she started to hold a grudge against him? Is that why she started to scheme against him and his entire family?

Helena didn’t know what he was thinking. She was just stunned by his sudden speech.

As she was internally gushing about how cute her husband was, Vernon’s cheeks flushed.

He wanted to look strong enough for her to share her worries with him. He doesn’t want to look cute, alright?

Helena did not show her emotions on her face at all. If Vernon couldn’t hear her thoughts, he would have never found that that was what she thought about him in her heart.

Helena smiled and said, "Fine. I will tell you what happened. Okay?"

Vernon cleared his throat and nodded.

"It’s about my mom," Helena said.

Vernon was stunned at once. "Your mom? What are you searching for about your mom?"

Helena sighed. She had a smile on her lips, but it wasn’t a happy smile. She said, "My mom’s accident."

Vernon frowned. "Your mom’s accident? You mean it wasn’t an accident but someone tried to..."

He did not finish her sentence. But both of them knew that he was talking about murder.

He couldn’t help but frown deeper. In his previous life, he had never heard about anything that his mother-in-law’s death could be a murder. What was happening in his life?

Or is it that she doubted it was a murder but finally found that it wasn’t? So she let the matter be?

As he was thinking, he heard Helena chuckle, "Did you watch too many movies? Murder? Who would want to murder my mother? She is the sweetest soul one could find. If one wanted to murder her, that person had to be insanely psychotic."

Vernon blinked his eyes and felt she was right. He, too, agrees that Helena’s mother is a very sweet person.

Whenever he met her, she would give him the sweetest smile he had ever seen on someone’s face.

As a rich young man, he had seen many people smiling at him, but he could also see that their smiles weren’t sincere. All those smiles were nothing but a way for them to fawn on him. It was just for the sake of the riches behind him and never for him.

But Mother Ford wasn’t like that. He could feel her genuine warmth whenever he was around her.

She never cared that he was the young master of the Jeffery family. Instead, she had always looked at him as a youngster and her daughter’s future husband.

He nodded, "You are right. If not, then what are you searching for?"

Helena pursed her lips for a second. Then she slowly started to speak, "I think my mom was searching for something. Something very important. When she had an accident, she had gone out to search for it. Even though I don’t know what she was searching for, I want to find it and give my mother some peace in her afterlife."

Vernon blinked his eyes. He looked at Helena’s face seriously.

He knows how much she loved her mother. But he did not know that she had been trying to fulfill her mother’s last wish even though she didn’t know what that wish was.

He could see exhaustion in the depths of her eyes. She was still not out of her mother’s death?

He did not know about this.

Well, once he thought about it carefully, it has only been a week since the incident.

She wasn’t even given much time to cope with her loss and she was forced to get married to him.

She never had the chance to let her emotions out. She had let them out one way or another. Maybe she was trying to do that by doing this?

And he had never known about this in his previous life?

Just this thought made him feel that he was a failure as her husband.

What exactly had he been doing in his previous life with her?

Slowly, he took a deep breath and asked her, "What have you found until now? Maybe I could help?"

Helena smiled. This time, she did not dawdle and replied, "I don’t know the details yet, but I found that she had been visiting many hospitals for the past few months. I don’t know the reason, but she suddenly started to search around for the hospitals. I have to look more into it before I can confirm."
