Chapter 55: Claw and Forest

Chapter 55: Claw and Forest

The warm sunlight filtered through the canopy of towering oak trees, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor.

It looked really peaceful and comforting, but they knew they couldn’t waste any more time.

"We can’t stay here for long. We need to keep moving." he broke the silence.

She nodded in agreement.

"I’ve been thinking... according to the information I managed to gather before we escaped, this island is much larger than I thought. It’s divided into sectors, each with its own town or settlement."

Lyra’s eyebrows rose in interest. "How many are there?"

Neo’s eyes narrowed as he tried to recall the details.

"I’m not really sure. Our best bet is to reach the main sector – it’s supposed to be the largest and we could just use the road to find our way"

"The problem is the outbreak. Whoever’s running this place will block the roads and the surrounding area to contain it."

He didn’t expect a response from her, and instead, simply continued to think.

’We’ll need to find a way to avoid or distract them if we want to make it through. Maybe we can use the terrain to our advantage, or try to move at night ’

He shook his head, dismissing the idea.

’No, the soldiers would be more active at night.’

Just as he was contemplating, Lyra suddenly moved.

Her hand covered his mouth.

"Don’t speak. A very dangerous person is close," she warned.

Before he could even process anything, her grip on his arm tightened and she pulled him into a nearby bush.

THUD!

They landed softly among the leaves, holding their breath as they waited to see what would happen next.

A rustling sound echoed from a distance, growing louder with each passing moment.

Neo transformed his eyes, and his gaze pierced through the underbrush, revealing a group of people wearing combat suits with visors.

The group of combat-suited individuals sprinted towards the zombie-infested town.

They were heading straight into the heart of danger, yet they showed no signs of hesitation.

The ones who leaped from tree to tree were particularly impressive, their bodies arcing through the air with ease line Ninjas.

When they finally vanished from sight, Lyra let go of his mouth and sighed in relief.

She was shaking and trembling.

"Are they really that dangerous?" he asked.

"Not all, but one of them smells really dangerous," she responded.

"If you say it’s dangerous then it is. Thanks for saving me." he patted her head in a job well done. "Let’s change directions, just to make sure we don’t encounter more of them"

A faint blush rose to her cheeks at the gentle praise, and for a moment, her tough exterior softened. If her tail was out right now, it would be wagging nonstop.

He had seen this side of Lyra before, and it was a rare glimpse into her more vulnerable personality.

But as quickly as it appeared, her stoic mask slipped back into place, and she nodded curtly, already moving to change their direction.

’She’s playing hard to get,’ The thought brought a subtle smile to his face as he trailed behind.

After travelling for a twenty minutes they saw a mountainous area in the distance, but even with their speed it would take them an hour to reach it.

Neo contemplated for a moment, his mind working to connect the dots between their current location and the Main Sector.

Though the mountains were far, he was convinced that they lay in the same direction as their intended destination, a guess reinforced by the roads they had spotted earlier

’Let’s head there. It would give us a better vantage point.’ Neo pointed.

Without questioning him, Lyra altered their course, her agile body propelling her up the steep mountain.

As Neo trailed behind Lyra, he couldn’t help but appreciate her unique gift - a heightened sense of awareness that seemed to border on precognition.

It was as if she had a sixth sense for detecting even the slightest whispers of danger, and he had grown to trust her instincts implicitly.

And so, when she suddenly froze, her head leaned to one side like a wild animal sensing prey.

"They’re people ahead," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the gentle rustle of the wind. "But they don’t smell dangerous."

Her eyes gleamed with curiosity as she turned to him, seeking his input on how to proceed. "You want me to take them out?"

Neo considered their options.

But then he shook his head. "No, let’s go around them. I don’t want anyone knowing about us just yet."

The devastation that had ravaged the town was a blessing in disguise.

It had effectively erased all evidence of their presence, leaving behind a blank slate that could be exploited to their advantage.

But then.

’Damn it, I forgot to destroy that facility,’ he cursed himself, his mind racing with the implications of his oversight.

It was a critical mistake, one that could potentially put them in grave danger if their enemies were to discover any remaining evidence or footage.

Lyra’s voice cut through his thought. "What’s wrong?"

Neo’s gaze met her, but he couldn’t bring himself to speak, his embarrassment and frustration rendering him momentarily mute.

He could only reflect on his mistake, hoping that the zombies would destroy the facility, which he had left wide open.

"It’s nothing, let’s go," Neo said with a dismissive shrug.

Lyra’s eyes narrowed slightly, as if she didn’t quite believe him, but she didn’t press the issue

With her keen sense of smell guiding them, they navigated the treacherous landscape with ease, avoiding detection and staying one step ahead of their enemies.

And finally, after travelling for close to an hour, they reached the base of the mountainous region, the rugged terrain giving way to towering peaks that stretched upwards towards the sky.

"Let’s take a rest, we covered a long distance, and I doubt anyone would come here," Neo’s voice was low and weary as he sat on the ground.
