Awakening: God-Tier Adaptive System -
Chapter 54: Claw and Dawn
Chapter 54: Claw and Dawn
With a steady hand, he scanned the area for the gas tanks, his eyes narrowing as he focused on his target.
Although he hadn’t received extensive training, his body recalled the proper technique for holding the gun because of his system.
Next.
By partially transforming his eyes, he was able to enhance his vision, increasing his chances of hitting the mark.
He spotted two large tanks on the side of the building, partially hidden by a row of cars.
’That’s it, I just need to make one explode and it will create a chain reaction,’
Finger tightening around the trigger, he prepared for the shot.
BANG!
The bullet hit the gas tank with a loud clang.
However, instead of the expected explosion, there was only a faint hissing sound.
Disappointment flashed across his face. Reality turned out to be far more anticlimactic than the movies.
Undeterred, he pulled the trigger again, and again, and again, each shot hitting the tank.
The hissing grew louder, and the air was filled with the acrid smell of leaking gasoline.
Suddenly, a small spark ignited the fuel, and a massive fireball erupted from the gas station.
BOOOOOM!
The blast was intense, sending flames scattering throughout the area
Zombies in the surrounding area immediately reacted to the explosion, their moans growing louder as they ran towards the burning building.
With the zombies distracted by the explosion, Neo and Lyra sprang into action, their eyes scanning the rooftops for a safe path to escape.
They spotted a series of buildings with adjacent roofs, and without hesitation, they launched themselves into the air.
The wind rushed past their faces, and their hair streamed behind them as they leaped from roof to roof.
For a moment, it seemed like they might actually escape unscathed.
But as they landed on a particularly narrow rooftop, Neo’s eyes caught sight of dozens crawling type zombies that jump like bunch of hunters.
"We need to take them out fast!" Neo’s voice was a low growl as he transformed into his tiger form, his body expanding with powerful muscles.
Lyra followed suit, her own transformation a blur of motion as she unleashed her inner beast.
Together, they gripped their poles.
And intercepted the enemies midair, their weapons biting deep into flesh and crushing skulls with ease.
The sound of crunching metal and snapping bones filled the air as they waded through, leaving a trail of blood.
With the mutated zombies gone, Neo and Lyra seized the opportunity to make their escape.
They landed in the open area, their feet pounding the ground in unison as they sprinted towards the forest.
The trees loomed ahead, a dense canopy of green that promised shelter and concealment.
As they approached the tree line, they could hear the zombies stirring behind them, their moans and groans growing louder with every step.
With the zombies hot on their heels, they pumped their arms and legs even harder, their speed increasing until they completely disappeared.
"We’re safe now," Neo sighed, his shoulders sagging in relief as he leaned against the trunk of a tree.
He closed his eyes, letting the gentle rustle of leaves on his face wash over him.
The process of transforming was draining, both physically and mentally, and he needed time to rest and recharge before he could do it again.
Beside him, Lyra stood like what they did was just a warmup.
"You’re similar to me in many ways," she observed, her eyes narrowing. "But you tire easily. Why is that?"
He did not respond and just pretended to be asleep.
The truth was, his powers were a copy, a mimicry of the real thing.
Gluttony’s ability allowed him to tap into the strengths of others, but it was still a limited power for now.
It was why he tired easily, why he couldn’t sustain his transformations for extended periods.
Lyra’s gaze lingered on him, her eyes searching for answers that Neo wasn’t willing to give.
She seemed to sense that there was more to his story, that there were depths to his real identity that he hadn’t revealed yet.
But for now, she let it drop, her attention turning instead to their surroundings.
She stole a glance at Neo, and her smile grew slightly wider.
’He’s weaker than me,’ she thought to herself. ’I need to protect him. It’s my responsibility to keep him safe.’
’I have to admit, it’s nice to have someone to take care of. Someone who needs me. It makes me feel... useful.’
She turned away from him then, trying to composed herself. She didn’t know how to act, or what she wanted their relationship to be.
The lines between them had become blurred, and she was no longer sure what was real and what was just a product of their desperate circumstances.
One thing was certain though: he had become the center of her world.
In this moment, his well-being mattered more to her than her own, and she felt a deep sense of devotion and loyalty towards him.
Neo’s eyes slowly came into focus, and he was greeted by the sight of Lyra standing watchfully beside him.
Above, the sky was transforming into a canvas of soft hues, signaling the arrival of a new day.
It was strange how so many things had happened to him.
And yet, when he thought back on it, only a single night had elapsed, filled with a dizzying array of events that felt like they belonged to a lifetime ago.
Neo turned his head, and his gaze fell upon Lyra. She stood with her face tilted upwards, bathed in the warm, golden light of the rising sun.
Gentle rays danced across her features, illuminating her skin and making her look radiant.
A soft, serene smile played on her lips, and for a moment, she seemed to be one with the dawn itself.
But the moment she realized he was looking, her expression changed. Her serene smile vanished, and her face returned to its usual state.
