Chapter 39: The Thing

Chapter 39: The Thing

Neo moved carefully, his eyes sweeping over the bloodied facility.

Broken glass crunched beneath his boots, and he saw evidence of people being thrown out of the large windows.

Thick, viscous liquid coated the floor, pooling around the corpses.

Some bodies were slumped against terminals, their faces frozen in expressions of terror. Others had been eviscerated, their torsos split open.

A warning alarm must have gone off earlier, but now all that remained was silence.

CLICK!

Neo crouched and picked up one of the darts lodged in the sole of his boot.

The needle bent unnaturally, as if it hit reinforced metal instead of flesh.

He examined the others scattered across the floor. Some were snapped clean in half, while others had traces of a dark, almost oil-like substance clinging to the tips.

It wasn’t blood. At least, not human blood, judging from the color and texture.

His mind raced through possibilities.

If the darts failed to injure whatever escaped, then his own dart gun would likely be useless against it.

’I’m starting to change my mind. Maybe I should just get out of here before I end up dead,’ he muttered, eyeing the blood-streaked walls and mangled corpses.

But even as he considered leaving, his feet refused to move.

Not because he was recklessly brave, but because his gut told him to keep going.

So, he did.

This facility was more straightforward than he expected—long, straight corridors lined with rooms on both sides.

As he moved deeper, he began to question whether this was the same place he was taken to.

However, since he didn’t enter an elevator, the chances of that were low.

BANG! BANG BANG!

The sudden gunshots echoing off the walls made him instinctively duck, but he quickly realized it was coming from the corner up ahead.

The danger was rising, and his mind raced for a solution.

’That’s it!’

He lay down and pretended to be dead.

More gunshots echoed, shifting to fully automatic.

Whatever the gunner was up against had to be tough, judging by the amount of ammunition being used.

The gunfire continued for over a minute. Then, without warning, it abruptly stopped, leaving behind silence.

Neo remained still, pressing himself against the floor and wall while keeping his dart gun hidden against his body.

To blend in better, he smeared some blood on his hazmat suit, making sure he wouldn’t stand out too much.

He waited until he heard footsteps approaching to his position.

From the sound alone, he could tell there were three people walking. Their voices grew clearer as they got closer.

"Can’t believe we lost one of our special soldiers, even after using that serum to weaken the thing," one of them said.

The voice was familiar—Neo recognized it as one of the nurses.

"Forget it," another replied. "Let’s just be thankful we managed to secure the specimen. That thing took down everyone in this place. If not for the metal doors, it would have massacred the whole town."

"Not just that. If this specimen ends up crossing paths with that zombie awakener, things will get even more complicated," the first nurse grunted.

"This is exactly why I told them to burn the corpses immediately instead of letting them rot. Now, we have an outbreak on our hands."

"Yeah, say that to the higher-ups," the other nurse scoffed. His friend always liked to talk big, but in the end, they were just grunts following orders.

"Tch, whatever," the first one muttered. "Let’s just get this over with. The last thing we need is another screw-up on our record."

"Well, at least now we don’t have to worry about this thing. We already put this special collar on it."

The group moved past Neo without a second glance. His oversized hazmat suit hid his body well.

His breathing remained shallow as he carefully adjusted his grip. He planned to take out the mercenary first, lining up his shot.

The mercenary was carrying a naked woman on his shoulder.

Her body hung limply in his arms, her pale skin covered in bruises and strange markings.

Strands of her long, damp hair clung to her face, and from this distance, he couldn’t tell if she was unconscious or worse.

SWOOSH! SWOOSH!

Neo pulled the trigger, aiming for the neck. That area offered the best chance for the dart to pierce through the hazmat suit and deliver the tranquilizer effect quickly.

The mercenary barely had time to react when he got hit by two darts. His body tensed, his grip on the woman faltering as the deadly red tranquilizer spread through his system.

Both nurses walking ahead sensed something was wrong, when they heard a thud.

But it was too late.

SWOOSH! SWOOSH!

Two more darts struck their body.

One of them gasped, reaching for his throat, but his legs gave out almost instantly.

The other stumbled forward, trying to turn around, but his body failed him, collapsing onto the cold floor.

Within seconds, all three were down, their bodies twitching before going completely still.

Neo remained crouched, watching carefully. Whatever those darts were made of, they were different from the usual ones that takes a good minute or two to take effect.

His eyes turned to the unconscious woman in the mercenary’s arms. He needed to make a decision fast.

’This girl is the one responsible for all this killing...’

It didn’t take a genius to figure that out.

He stood up and stepped closer, nudging her with his foot to turn her over.

"She looks so young..." he muttered, his words trailing off after he saw her bare breast, "But her body is fully developed."

Those two mountains were at least D cup and were perfectly shaped.

’What the hell am I thinking?’ he scolded himself and try to calm both of his heads.

He looked at her again and noticed a metallic collar around her neck. The small device blinked with a steady green light.

’So, this collar is some kind of seal to lock her powers?’ He knelt down and touched it.

The woman didn’t look like she would wake up anytime soon, but he was still anxious.
