Chapter 38: Spot On Part 4.
’I wonder if there’s anything here that could increase my chance more,’ he muttered, scanning the room again.
His eyes landed on a smaller metal container, different from the others. It had a single drawer built into its frame, secured with a digital lock instead of a key.
Neo crouched down, inspecting the interface. The screen was scratched but functional, displaying a simple four-digit keypad.
He didn’t know the password, but an idea came to mind.
"Tracker."
His eyes glowed faintly, and latent fingerprints appeared on the keypad, some fresher than others.
Using this, he analyzed the prints by pressure and clarity, determining which keys had been pressed the most.
The darker, more defined prints indicated recent or frequent use, while the lighter ones suggested they had been touched less often.
It was still a long shot, considering a four-digit code had 10,000 possible combinations (0000–9999), but narrowing it down to four commonly pressed numbers significantly reduced the possibilities.
He began running through the most probable sequences, prioritizing the most smudged and deeply imprinted keys—the ones that had likely been pressed in order.
If he was right, the lock would open within a few tries.
If he was wrong... well, he’d have to figure out another way.
The first attempt—no response.
Second—still nothing.
He exhaled slowly, keeping his focus. Based on the fading patterns of the prints, some numbers had been used more often than others.
That meant repeated digits were a possibility.
On the third attempt, he adjusted the sequence, prioritizing the most distinct marks.
BEEP!
The small screen flashed green.
CLICK!
The drawer unlocked.
He opened it and found a bunch of pills inside a small bottle with labels on them.
One of them mentioned APX drugs, but something was different about the ones inside.
He didn’t know how he figured it out—he just knew.
CLICK!
He opened one and touched a pill.
[DING!]
[System Recognized a better variant version. Would you like to update your database to enhance the drug’s effects and reduce adverse reactions?]
There was no reason to refuse. While the side effects of APX weren’t unbearable due to the system, he had still felt them before. Completely removing them would be much better.
"Yes," he confirmed.
[DING!]
[Updating drug database... Optimizing APX variant...]
A faint glow surrounded the pill in his hand. Within seconds, it began to soften, turning into a thick liquid that seeped into his palm.
[Upgrade complete. APX-Version 2.0 added to the database.]
Neo slipped the bottle into the side pocket of his hazmat suit and turned his attention to the other bottles
One bottle caught his attention
"ECB: Enhanced Cognitive Booster".
It sounded like an upgraded version of the APX.
Another was labeled
"RSR-7: Rapid Stamina Recovery", which could be useful if he needed to keep moving without rest.
Then there was one with a red warning label:
"X-13: Experimental Muscle Enhancer – High Risk of Cardiac Strain".
He narrowed his eyes. This one sounded dangerous, but if the system could neutralize the side effects like before, it might be worth considering.
But for now, he stuffed them all into his pocket.
These drugs were meant to aid the people working here, so they shouldn’t be lethal—except for X-13. That one was clearly marked as dangerous.
Even so, being stored alongside the others meant it wasn’t outright fatal or highly dangerous.
With his system and natural tolerance to withstand drug effects, he would be relatively safe.
’I’m ready,’
Neo approached the bridge door and spotted another keycard slot.
His grip tightened around the B-Rank access card, hoping it would work again.
He swiped it.
A brief pause. Then—
BEEP!
The red light turned green, and the reinforced door unlocked with a soft click. Fortune was on his side.
Taking a deep breath, he pushed the door open and stepped onto the decontamination chamber.
Gas began to fill the air.
His body tensed as a fine mist sprayed from the vents along the walls and ceiling.
When it was finished, the other door unlocked with a soft beep and slid open.
Neo stepped through cautiously, his grip tightening around the dart rifle.
The area beyond was a glass bridge, offering a 360-degree view of everything below.
Neo’s eyes narrowed as he took in the massive open space beneath him.
At the bottom, several large, circular containers sat in neat rows, each filled with a green, bubbling liquid.
Pipes ran along the walls, occasionally releasing bursts of steam.
’What the hell are they making here?’
Whatever it was, just looking at those chemicals made him break into a cold sweat.
If someone fell in, they would either dissolve into nothing or turn into a psychotic clown.
Neither option sounded appealing.
His gaze flickered to the far end of the bridge, where another reinforced security door stood.
He swiped the ID, and the door slid open with a mechanical hiss.
’Shit!"
The sight that greeted him made his stomach tighten.
Mangled bodies littered the floor, some slumped against walls, others collapsed over workstations.
Lab coats and security uniforms were stained with blood, yet there were no bullet wounds.
’It looks like some beast ripped out their intestines,’ he added, glad that he was wearing the hazmat suits which made it more tolerable.
Next, he checked the other corpses, but none matched the one he was tracking.
’Tracker,’ he muttered.
His eyes glowed faintly as the ability activated.
A new layer of reality unfolded before him—faint, glowing footprints appeared on the floor, some smeared with blood.
They led deeper into the facility.
’So, they kept moving even after seeing all this,’ he murmured.
’It’s either they’re crazy or what they’re looking for is worth their lives,’
He followed the bloodstained footprints, his dart gun raised and ready in case a mutated beast suddenly pounced on him.
In this place, he needs to disregard his previous logic about the world and expect anything.
