Chapter 35: Spot On
Suhana blinked, her expression turning from surprise to curiosity.
"Well, that’s an interesting story." She smiled, intrigued by his openness.
"If you don’t mind me asking, what brings you to this island."
Neo leaned back in his chair, pretending to relax, but internally, he was calculating his next move.
"I need money, a lot of it."
Again, he took the most direct approach.
Suhana’s smile widened as she leaned in slightly, her eyes lingering on Neo with a playful glint.
"Money, huh? You must have some big plans,"
Neo couldn’t help but notice the way her words seemed to dance around him, as if testing him.
"Everyone needs money; it’s not really that surprising." he shrugged it off and shifted the conversation. "I think we should go back to the line. I don’t want to end up being food for those monsters."
Though he wasn’t really planning to do it without a proper plan since his face didn’t match his ID.
Unfortunately, it was the best way to get her off his back.
She must have some kind of fetish for bald men, given how flirty she was—twirling her hair and acting all cute.
"Don’t worry about those monsters, I’ll protect you." She reached for his hand, and he instinctively tried to pull away, but he was surprised by how strong her grip was.
She looked him dead in the eye and smiled. "I’m what you people call an Awakener, and I came here to resolve the situation."
Neo swallowed hard as her black eyes morphed to a glowing shade of yellow, eerily similar to a cat’s.
"I can smell it... You’re a killer, aren’t you?" she added with knowing smile.
"Aren’t we all?" he forced himself to reply.
Her eyes widened at his unexpected response before she let go of his hand and started giggling.
"You’re really interesting," she said as she stood up.
She pulled out a card and handed it to him. "Take this—it’ll let you bypass the lines. Let’s meet again in the next sector."
"Just take it." She smirked. "I have pretty good intuition... and I like you a little."
He didn’t say anything right away and just accepted the card. It was labeled B-Rank Access—a big upgrade from the F-Rank pass he had stolen.
And unlike his, this one had no name on it—just a series of numbers.
"Thank—" He stopped, realizing the woman was no longer there. She disappeared like a ghost, just like that.
Neo glanced around and asked one of the people inside the store, "Did you see the woman I was talking to?"
"What woman?"
"The one that was just sitting here before," Neo insisted.
"Sorry, dude, but you’ve been sitting there alone," the man replied, eyeing him like he had lost his mind.
"Forget it." Neo stood up, not wanting to explain himself any further.
The place was already being evacuated because of a being that could raise the dead—an invisible woman wasn’t all that shocking in comparison.
’Why do they get amazing powers, and I’m stuck with this shitty system?’ he grumbled to himself as he walked out of the store.
Neo stared at the B-Rank Access card in his hand, running his thumb over its smooth surface.
’Should I use it?’
Neo sighed, adjusting his jacket.
’Might as well try my luck.’
If he got caught, he’d figure something out. If he didn’t, then today was finally looking up.
With that thought, he turned toward the trucks.
The guards were scanning IDs, letting people through one by one.
Unlike the lower ranks who had to wait, those with higher clearance barely spent a few seconds at the checkpoint before being waved forward.
He took a deep breath and stepped forward, ready to test his chances—
[DING!]
A sharp chime rang in his head, grounding him in place.
[Target Identified: Two individuals responsible for your death have been spotted.]
Neo’s body tensed.
[Eliminate both targets. Reward: Depending on Performance.]
His eyes darted around, scanning the crowd.
Among the mercenaries helping with the evacuation, two men in nurse uniforms stood out.
Neo recognized them instantly. These were the same bastards who had strapped him down, filled his veins with experimental drugs, and watched as he writhed in agony.
Back in that damn prison, they watched him suffer, taking notes as he screamed and begged for mercy.
Not once did either of them show a shred of compassion.
They treated him worse than a pig for slaughter—strapped him down, injected him with whatever cruel concoctions they had cooked up, and recorded every agonizing reaction without a hint of remorse.
"Fuckers!" His grip tightened around the card.
A part of him wanted to rush in and beat the shit out them right there.
But killing them in the open would only put a target on his back.
’No, they couldn’t just die...that would be letting them off too easily.’
They needed to suffer. They needed to feel the same agony he endured, but a hundred times worse.
The system gave him the perfect job to settle some scores.
’But there were too many mercenaries. If not for them...’
Neo trailed off, forcing himself to stay calm.
’I’ll observed them first.’
Looking closer, he realized they weren’t here to help with the rescue—that much was obvious.
They also didn’t seem in a hurry to board the trucks like the others.
Instead, they kept checking their surroundings.
One of them glanced at his tablet again, his thumb hovering over the screen before locking it.
The other adjusted his gloves for the third time, a nervous habit.
Neo narrowed his eyes. If they weren’t trying to escape or help, then why were they here?
The two male nurses exchanged a quick glance, then turned to three nearby mercenaries.
They spoke in low voices, and they were too far for him to catch anything.
Whatever they said though, it made the mercenaries nod in agreement.
The group moved away from the crowd and headed toward an alley between two buildings.
’This is my chance!’
