Chapter 34: A Weird Island Part 2
The dim moonlight revealed a person clad in dark, tactical gear; his face obscured by a gas mask with a sleek, reflective visor.
In his hand, he carried a rifle equipped with a night-vision scope, while several magazines and clips were strapped to his sides.
A pistol was also holstered on their right leg, while a dagger rested on the left.
Neo measured the distance carefully and waited for the mysterious figure to get closer, but the mercenary stopped 6 meters away.
At this distance, any movement from Neo would get him shot before he could even make a move.
’I can do this. I don’t think he knows about me,’
The fact that the mercenary had approached him instead of immediately opening fire meant he wasn’t in immediate danger of being shot—at least, not yet.
"Why are you out here?" the man asked again, his voice muffled by the gas mask but still clear enough to hear. "Didn’t you hear the warning? Everyone is supposed to evacuate to the next sector. This area is compromised."
Neo’s pulse slowed slightly. The mercenary mistaken him for one of their own—probably because he was still wearing the stolen uniform.
That gave him an opening.
He straightened his posture, trying to look like he belonged.
"Sorry, I just came here to take a piss," he kept his tone casual.
"I don’t care. Go back and get out of this place. It’s bad, and if you want to live longer, you should leave now."
Neo said nothing as he slowly turned and then sprinted away.
Though turning his back on an armed individual was risky, he didn’t have much of a choice. He figured he’d get shot either way if he tried to fight.
In addition, the way that person carried himself was different from the others—more professional and far more dangerous.
When he reached the town, the disorder was even more obvious up close.
People were being hurried into trucks, so no one paid him any attention.
This gave him the idea to fall in line, hoping to gather some information.
There, he spotted a group of people wearing what appeared to be waiter uniforms, and they began gossiping.
"Is that really true? Are you saying one of the experiments resurrected and started controlling corpses?"
"Yes, that’s why they’ve been sending our forces there to try to stop it. Anyone bitten by those zombies will turn into one too, so we need to get out of here fast before they reach us."
They looked visibly shaken by the incoming danger, but strangely enough, none of them seemed shocked by the idea of zombies.
’Wait, someone awakened the power to raise the dead, and mine just makes me run for one minute without tiring? Isn’t this unfair?’,
He thought that with such power, he wouldn’t be here, hiding and running.
His blood pressure rose just thinking about it, so he took a moment to calm himself.
’At least I managed to get out before those zombies started flooding the area.’
While all this was happening, he noticed that people in uniforms like his were placed at the very end of the line.
They prioritized evacuation based on importance and position, not really a surprise.
At this rate, he would be one of the last people to be rescued, and they were even checking IDs—which was definitely a problem.
So, he decided to leave the line and look for somewhere to eat.
Finding a place wasn’t hard—there was a mart nearby, abandoned but still open.
There, he grabbed some free food.
’Oh, nice, a Motella,’ he grabbed one and nodded in satisfaction.
What could possibly be better than eating a chocolate spread that was 99.9% sugar? In fact, calling it chocolate was already pushing it.
’I survived all those drugs, but I’m pretty sure this would kill me in the long run.’
’Now that I think about it, all those corporations making this kind of food probably have a higher kill count.’
Though he was joking, there was some truth in his humor.
’Now, let’s see...’
He checked the other foods and was impressed.
None of them were cheap brands, and he even spotted various items from different countries.
In the end, he picked a slice of bread, two hotdogs, and a hydration drink.
With his meal in hand, he made his way to a small table, sat down, and started eating while casually watching the people still lining up.
They must have noticed him because a few people started heading over to grab food as well.
He greeted them with a casual smile, and they didn’t suspect a thing.
However—
Out of nowhere, a woman with a light brown skin and tantalizing almond-shaped eyes took a seat across from him.
Her dark hair was tied into a loose ponytail, with a few strands falling over her forehead.
"Hello. Did we meet before?" she asked, her local accent still noticeable in the way she spoke.
Neo raised an eyebrow and studied her. She looked young, maybe around 25, and her uniform suggested she worked at one of the stores here.
"Well, this place is pretty small, so you must have seen me somewhere," he responded, taking a sip from his bottle.
She squinted her eyes for a good three seconds.
"No, I feel like I’ve seen you on TV from the outside... Wait, are you perhaps a doctor? A firefighter? A plumber?"
Neo forced a smile. "Is it because I’m bald?"
The woman giggled softly. "I’m sorry, I was just messing with you. My name is Suhana... And you are?"
"Fernando," he answered quickly. That was the name on the ID he had stolen.
"Fernando? You don’t look like you came from the south," she pointed out, raising an eyebrow.
"My mother cheated, so I ended up with the name my father picked while he was in the military. Too bad he didn’t consider that I’d pop out looking nothing like him."
"I..." Suhana was completely speechless. She didn’t expect him to be so open about his personal life.
She didn’t even consider that he was lying because of how quickly he answered.
Little did she know, Neo did this on purpose.
The longer he took to respond, the more suspicious he would seem.
This was basic—act confident enough, and people will believe anything.
