Avery's Game Of Revenge
Chapter 99: Because She Lied.

Chapter 99: Because She Lied.

Before Avery could come up with a proper reply to that, the bartender’s voice calling out to them interrupted her.

"Ava and Alice?!" the man called out.

Pushing her chair back as she rose from it, Avery waved her hand so the man could see where they were seated.

"I’ll go get it."

"Thank you!" Alice whispered, clapsing her hands together in gratitude and getting a small smile from Avery.

As the latter walked to the desk to pick up their coffees, she took the opportunity to glance at her watch again. She had just twenty minutes left now.

Avery paid for the coffee and turned around to start on her way back to their table, her brows furrowing in surprise and confusion when she didn’t see Alice sitting there.

"Where did she go?" she murmured out loud, the question directed at no one in particular. Her eyes swept around the cafe’s interior and catching no signs of Alice still present in the cafe, she shrugged and made a mental note to call her later on and check on her.

For now, she was thankful her silent prayers were answered and she could leave early to accost Charlotte before she got the chance to leave the campus. Her palms tightening around the coffee cups, she hurried back to her seat to pick up her backpack.

As soon as Avery’s legs were out of the cafe, she broke into a sprint and headed straight to the fountain at the center of the campus. Spotting Charlotte’s back view from a far distance, her head bent over probably in the middle of reading a book, she screeched to a sharp halt.

"Doesn’t she feel the heat from the sun at all?" Avery murmured. She smoothed her hair with one hand to erase any evidence that might point to the fact that she ran all the way here, before embarking on the short walk that closed the distance between her and the fountain.

She didn’t stop to catch her breath until she was standing right beside her target.

"Hey, Charlotte! You’re here," she faked a gasp, fake surprise dripping from her voice.

The girl in question whipped her head around to face Avery, a glimmer of apprehension flickering across her face when her brain registered who it was.

"Why...What are you doing here? With me?" she stuttered,

Avery blinked, schooling her expression into the most innocent one ever,

"What do you mean? I was passing by and I saw you..." she trailed off, her keen eyes scrutinizing Charlotte’s face carefully as if that would help her determine what the latter was thinking.

"You were passing by and..." Charlotte reiterated, her brows raised in question.

"Then I saw you here and decided to say hi. Sorry if I disturbed you," Avery continued, taking a step back, "I can leave now."

"No!" Charlotte exclaimed instantly, stopping her from leaving. "You don’t have to leave because of me. I was just a bit shocked cause you popped out suddenly...but I’ll leave instead."

Avery frowned. She had expected this, so it wasn’t hard to know what Charlotte would think next and how to counter her thoughts.

"I don’t have to leave but you’re leaving?" she asked, silence accompanying her words. Watching as Charlotte ignored her and busied herself with packing up the novels she had probably been reading earlier, Avery took another step back, making the movement as obvious as she could so as to attract Charlotte’s attention.

"What are you doing?" Charlotte asked.

"Staying away from you," Avery deadpanned. Without so much as a short pause in between sentences, she continued, "I felt a rush of deja Vu with your reaction just now and guess why? I’ve gotten a lot of those in the past two weeks. Especially today when I summoned the courage to come to school and attend classes."

Noticing that her words were beginning to affect Charlotte, she added, "You also think I’m the Avery McCAllum, right? That’s why you’re trying to avoid me."

Charlotte was taken aback, and she did no good job in hiding it, giving Avery the leeway to continue.

"It’s alright though. I felt much worse while reading the hate comments and got over it in two weeks. This, you avoiding me, I’ll forget about it soon," she stated, not bothering to hide the displeasure in her voice. "Night, Charlotte."

And she turned to leave.

Avery took one step away, and another, her brows furrowing when Charlotte didn’t call her back like she expected. Had she fucked this up too? But wait...was Charlotte more hard-headed than she had thought? Why did she not react to all she said just now?

"Because you lied."

Hearing a couple of footsteps run up to her and the three words which sounded like they were the answers to the question in her mind just now, Avery missed a breath and broke into a splutter of coughs.

"What?!" she exclaimed, turning to face the person who had just spoken. Charlotte. "I... I lied?"

"What? Why so shocked?" Charlotte returned the question, raising her voice to match with Avery’s pitch.

"It’s nothing. You also... Yeah, you crept up on me so suddenly that I got scared. Why? Thought we decided to stay away from each other just now."

"Because you lied," Charlotte affirmed. To the questioning look in Avery’s eyes, she replied, "You have two cups of coffee in your hand and I can’t see anyone else in sight waiting for it. It’s so obvious you got it for me before approaching me."

"That’s because..." Avery refrained from saying anything else, lowering her gaze to look at the cups in her hand. If Charlotte wanted to think she got it with her in mind, who was she to refuse that?

"See? You can’t come up with a quick lie," Charlotte scoffed. She took one of the cups which Avery was now offering, and muttered her thanks.

They continued their short trip in silence. To where? Avery had no idea, but didn’t breath a word for the first few minutes until...

"If you knew I lied about running into you, then why did you react that way at first?"
