Chapter 100: Scared Of The Real Avery.
Charlotte sighed and took a long sip of the coffee, evidently taking her time before replying, ’’It’s just...I don’t know if I should tell you this considering your confusing identity and all.’’
’’It’s alright,’’ Avery shrugged, making sure that a hint of sadness reflected in her voice.
’’I don’t think it is,’’ Charlotte disagreed. ’’What I actually spend my time thinking of is why the police are yet to detain you, even though you look so much like the younger miss McCallum. But then it came to me and I realized you are also a victim here. They couldn’t have let you be unless they have verified your identity and are really sure the real culprit is dead.’’
’’Younger miss McCallum?’’ Avery repeated, her brows raised in question.
’’Yeah...’’ Charlotte whispered.
A frown started to form on Avery’s face, ’’Why would you call her that? Everyone calls her Avery McCallum, the murderer, the ingrate, the traitor and so on.’’
’’It’s an habit that’s hard to let go of. My dad used to work there so when he talks about any of them at home, he addresses them as such. It shouldn’t be surprising that my mom and I also adopted his method of addressing them.’’
’’It sure isn’t,’’ Avery agreed, finding Charlotte’s point feasible enough. ’’So...you haven’t answered yet, why did you react like you did earlier?’’
’’Because I just dropped a call from my dad and he mentioned the young miss. Turning around and suddenly seeing your face was totally scary. Not that I’m scared of the real Avery—you aren’t fake, but still...’’
’’Shouldn’t you be scared of the her though? She’s a murderer; definitely not someone you will be happy to turn around and see.’’ Avery balled her hand into fists, not flinching even when her nails dug hard into her soft palm. It was her way of holding herself back from asking Charlotte what her father had said about her on the call.
There was no way she could do that without coming off as suspicious. But if she went in a roundabout way by asking another question before coming back to that, it should be alright. Her only problem now was the curiosity and anger swirling within her.
’’Well...’’ Charlotte’s monosyllabic reply only served to irk her more, so she went straight to the point,
’’Yeah...So what did your father say? About Avery.’’
’’Nothing much. I guess a popular celebrities blog cooked up a story with the picture of you and Stuart that the publicity team posted yesterday, and he got to watch it. He was telling me how the young miss used to love acting too,’’ Charlotte replied, her tone getting wistful as she neared the end of her sentence.
’’Oh really?’’ Avery’s face fell. She had no idea whether to be disappointed or relieved that nothing tangible had been said about her. Again, what should have been strange was if they actually said something weighty about her. After all, she was dead to the world. Her present identity and face as Ava Donovan was the only think keeping the incident in people’s memories. She forced a smile, ’’Now that I think about it, if your dad worked there, he’d be more shocked than most people.’’
’’Absolutely!’’ Charlotte replied instantly, fresh enthusiasm evident in her voice as if she had been waiting for this question right from the onset, ’’He talks about them so much that it’s gets so annoying sometimes. But I understand him. Everyone did, and that’s the only reason the keyboard warriors aren’t sending hate to him.’’
She inhaled slowly, ’’He was fired immediately the news was revealed that he was the one who delivered the tea to the Old man of the McCallum family on behalf of the young miss. If he hadn’t testified against her, he’d be in prison by now.’’
’’Wow! That was a close call for him,’’ Avery expressed her surprise, the fake smile unmoving on her face. The old butler got out of trouble by slandering her? That was highly expected. But that only explained why Butler Ross was free now, it didn’t explain how he hit the jackpot he is currently living on with his family.
She cleared her throat, ’’Sorry to ask, Charlotte, but you do know we have identical family backgrounds, right? We both aren’t from old money like the rest of the students here...’’
’’Yes?’’
’’Then...’’ Avery pretended to hesitate, making a show of taking a long sip of her coffee to ease her nervousness, ’’If your dad got fired, how come...I mean, how is it that you were able to get the funds to attend this school then? It’s totally okay if you don’t want to answer. I understand.’’
’’You understand but you’re curious?’’ Charlotte brows raised with a questioning arch. Seeing the smile on Avery’s face broaden slightly, she chuckled, ’’Same here. I’ll tell you how my dad came about his money if you tell me how yours did. And also, how you landed the special character role that gained you the opportunity to act in close proximity with a legend like Stuart Salvador.’’
’What the fuck?! She really can’t help but show her smart side in every conversation,’ Avery cussed inwardly, unable to keep the glint of surprise from reflecting in her eyes.
Her mouth parted to reply Charlotte, but she could not help but close it back. The number of lies dropping from her out on a daily basis was starting to bother her, terribly. She took in a deep breath and exhaled.
All was fair in the game of revenge.
With that resolution echoing in her head, Avery made up her mind and stopped dead in her tracks. She pulled Charlotte to a stop beside her.
’’There’s no reason for me not to tell you. I have nothing to hide except...’’ she lowered her gaze, feigning embarrassment, before proceeding, ’’...except some shameful memories of my past. Like I said, we do have similar backgrounds but only to an extent.’’
’’I knew it!’’ Charlotte exclaimed, a small smile blooming on her bespectacled face. ’’Everything about you screams it from head to toe.’’
