Chapter 92: Murderer’s Lookalike.
’’Yeah, they definitely know each other. Not as former flings but as real exes,’’ Jodi interrupted her, a mask of undisguised displeasure sitting on her face.
’’Thea-’’ Stuart began, but was interrupted almost immediately.
’’Jay, stay out of this. We are women and we’d get introduced to each other in one way or the other,’’ Jodi stated. She turned to face Avery, ’’Sloane, this is Bridgette and she’s Jay’s ex, his very first girlfriend if that might excite you. Bridge, this is Sloane and she’s... just Sloane.’’
’’Nice to meet you, Sloane,’’ Valentina said, her face beaming with a bright smile that irked Avery to no end.
’Tone it down, Tina. The audience aren’t half as stupid as you are. They’d definitely know that the smile is fucking fake and doesn’t fit the supposed to be innocent character,’ she said inwardly, her heart beating in anticipation.
This was the moment she had been waiting for. The character she was representing, Sloane, wasn’t meant to reply to Valentina’s character in the scene. Instead, she was to stare at Valentina with as much animosity as she could bring herself to. What better chance was there to show her hatred for the real Valentina, other than this one she just got? And that was the reason she would put this opportunity to good use.
She turned her gaze on Valentina, gradually hardening her eyes into a glare that projected her raw feelings.
Hate.
Avery said everything she had wanted to say to Valentina ever since she found out that Valentina had taken Emma’s place. She said it not in character as Sloane, not in pretence as Ava, but in her real identity as Avery. All with her eyes.
She was so absorbed with this, to the extent that she didn’t hear the co-director’s voice,
’’Cut! Cut! That was perfect but...someone go check on Miss McCallum! Hurry!"
Ms. McCallum? Avery blinked rapidly, hurriedly masking the animosity in her eyes. The co-director wasn’t talking about her, right?
She soon discovered the answer to that when her eyes cleared and right before her, just few metres away, was Valentina staring at her with apprehension clouding her eyes.
"What’s wrong with her?" she heard Jodi’s voice right behind her, and jolted.
Before she could come up with a perfect answer, Stuart’s assistants hurried over, each of them holding a coat in hand.
"Thanks for this," Avery muttered her gratitude, almost yanking the coat from the assistant’s hand. She slipped her hands into it almost at the same time as Jodi’s, and within the twinkling of an eye, the both of them were completely covered up.
’’First time wearing a bikini in the presence of these many prying eyes,’’ she whispered.
"Get prepared to do this for countless times then," came Jodi’s calm reply.
"Ms. Valentina, are you okay?"
They directed their attentions back to where Valentina was still standing, rooted to one spot with the apprehension that was in her eyes earlier, now transformed to annoyance. She was facing a confused Leroy.
"Manager James, can’t you please swap her out? The girl, Ava," she requested, not bothering to lower her voice.
Avery heard, as well as the other cast and crew members loitering around.
Leroy sighed, "I am so sorry, Ms McCallum. Is there a reason why—"
"No reason!" Valentina snapped. "You think I need a reason to request that a murderer’s lookalike be fired?! Especially when she’s totally irrelevant; when she can be replaced with any other extras and it won’t affect the shoot?! She looks exactly like the person who killed half of my family! I’m human and not a robot; of course, I haven’t forgotten that yet."
Leroy released another loud sigh.
"What you are requesting is not—"
"I’m not done talking, Leroy. Not only does she remind me of incidents I—and everyone else here I believe— wants to keep buried, she also has a creepy side. Did you see how she looked at me just now?!"
"Calm down, Ms. McCallum," Leroy said, trying to appease her. When his efforts turned out futile at the end of a full minute, he turned to others.
"Let’s take a 15 minutes break. No one should bother themselves with this. We will sort it out soon," he promised.
Seconds later, Avery found herself at the shore, lying on a shawl that one of the extras had spread there and abandoned. Jodi was lying right beside her, and for personal reasons, none of them had attempted to start a conversation since they got here.
The silence was grating at Avery’s nerves and she itched for a noise, one of any kind. Preferably Leroy informing them their break was over.
"I didn’t make a mistake, right?" she asked tentatively, breaking the resounding silence.
"You were perfect," Jodi replied, snapping out of her sour mood to give her a reassuring smile. She had also spotted and felt the raw feelings reflected in Avery’s eyes earlier and had commended her inwardly. It wasn’t easy for a newbie to project such aura during their first shoot as Avery had done.
But then, what was one to expect from the wife of a man like Archibald Donovan? One word; perfection.
"Are you alright though? Your hands were shaking from anger earlier."
Avery smiled.
"Of course. I guess I was so into character that I couldn’t control myself," she lied. A tap on her shoulder made her turn around to meet Stuart’s eyes, "Hey."
"Hey," Stuart returned her small wave. To Avery’s surprise, he slipped down and settled in the spare space beside her. "Ava, you did uhm...very good earlier. I have a question though, did you perhaps watch a lot of movies Emma starred in? By Emma, I mean—"
"Valentina’s cousin," Avery cut in, "I know that. In fact, I’d be an idiot if I didn’t know that considering all the comparisons that have been made between I and the Avery McCAllum this past week. And to answer your question, no." She held herself back from asking why he thought that, so as to make him think she was completely uninterested in hearing anything about Emma.
