Avery's Game Of Revenge
Chapter 78: Family gathering.

Chapter 78: Family gathering.

It was not Avery’s first time at Leeds, but it was her first time in this more...private section.

This restaurant had acted as a meeting point for her, her siblings, her cousins, and her friends and acquaintances. Celebrity or not, heiress or not, the most they did was booking a private room out there and enjoying their food. So why...

She tugged at the sleeves of the attendant who was walking before her, lowering her voice into a whisper as she asked,

"Are you sure we are heading in the right direction?"

"I can’t hear you, Miss," the attendant blinked back at her in confusion. "You don’t have to whisper," he added, as if he could tell that Avery was whispering only so she wouldn’t disturb the VVIP customers in here.

"Sorry about that," she cleared her throat, "I was asking if you’re sure we are headed in the right direction...or rather, the right room? Room 12?" she repeated.

"Yes Miss," the attendant replied with a small smile on his face. "I have worked here for months so there’s definitely no way I’m forgetting how to get to room 12. Besides, that private room can only be used by just one person and the people he invites to this place, like you."

"Who is the person?" Avery asked.

The attendant stopped dead in his tracks and turned to stare at her, his brows furrowed in surprise.

"Are you sure you were invited to room 12, Ma’am?" he asked.

Instead of answering, Avery lifted up her phone to show him the invite card from Emma.

"That’s room 12 clearly stated there, isn’t it? If you think there’s a mistake there then you can just take me to the room Emma McCAllum is in presently," she stated. One of the perks of having a celebrity sister.

More than fifty percent of the public population recognized Emma making it easy for her to find her sister in instances like this.

"Miss Emma is also in room 12 so I guess we aren’t heading the wrong way after all," the attendant said. He led her towards a bunch of black clothed, burly guards who scanned the invite on her phone and approved her passage.

Then they continued on their way down the dimly lit hallway, the overhead bulbs flashing with neon lights until they finally arrived in front of room 12’s door.

"I’ll go in myself. You don’t have to open the door," Avery spoke up before the attendant could push the door open. Flashing him a smile of gratitude, she dismissed him and watched as he walked away.

Seconds passed and even after the attendant had disappeared around the corner, Avery had yet to push the door open and step in. She could already guess who was in there...and after their last encounter, she wasn’t ready to face him yet.

She looked down at her button down gown, licking her lips nervously as she brought her fingers up to hover around the top two buttons.

’You are only doing this to loosen up, Avery,’ she said in her mind, as if trying to clear the guilt starting to accumulate within her. ’You aren’t doing this because he’ll insult you about being a stuck-up idiot.’

With that, she unfastened the top three buttons, baring a little part of the ivory-white skin of her upper chest. Digging her hand into her dyed black hair, she used her fingers as a makeshift comb to frame her hair perfectly around her face.

"This should be enough," she muttered beneath her breath.

A puff of air escaping her reddened lips—from all the nibbling she had done throughout the day—she placed her hand on the door knob and pushed it open.

"Who is—" she tried to greet in a cheerful and loud voice but Emma interrupted her charade even before she could start.

"You’re finally here, Vee. I almost thought you couldn’t make it."

She stepped into Emma’s outstretched arms, burying her face in her embrace for a few more seconds before disentangling herself and turning to the others in the room.

There was Arthur nursing a bottle of bear and...Archie.

"Hi, everyone..." she waved lightly, and awkwardly.

"The hell, Vee," Emma groaned, throwing her head back in a light laugh, "You’re greeting like you do when you’re hosting a press conference. This is a family... gathering."

"Archie is not family," Avery bit back instantly, expecting her brother and sister to laugh it off as they usually did when she was having a serious argument with Archie, in most instances where she was always the one at the receiving end of his unfunny teasings and insults.

But the direct opposite of what she expected was what happened instead; the smile on Arthur’s face disappeared while Emma’s face morphed into a frowning and displeased expression.

"That’s not nice, Avery," the latter said.

"Yeah, you should apologize, Vee," Arthur agreed.

Avery’s brows hiked higher in curiousity. Had she said something wrong?

"What did I do...?" she trailed off when her eyes caught Archie’s, holding his gaze and spotting the twinkle of amusement in them. She rephrased her question, "Why should I apologize?"

"Avery!" Arthur called, a hint of warning underlying his voice, but Avery could not be bothered to honor it.

"What? I was heading back home after a long and busy day at work; Emma called me and said there’s someone we have to comfort but I got here now and I’m being chastised?" She complained, "You might as well say I’m not needed here."

"That’s not—" Arthur cut himself off before he could scold her more, turning instead to Archie. "Avery had a long day at work. I’ll say sorry on her behalf," he apologized.

Archie turned his cold eyes on him, his brows raised in question.

"And when did I learn to appreciate apologies?" he asked.

"You have never," Arthur replied. "That means you forgive Avery, right?"

Archie gave a small nod, much to the surprise of everyone else in the room.

"Even the devil will forgive someone looking as she does now," he stated, his eyes lowering to the exposed part of her chest. "Not to talk of the kindest man on earth, like me."
