Avery's Game Of Revenge
Chapter 77: Rival Families.

Chapter 77: Rival Families.

Brian seemed to scoff in disbelief, "You won’t?"

"Yeah, I can’t and I won’t," Avery repeated.

"Why?"

Avery blinked, her face contorting into a frown.

"Brian, you aren’t seriously asking me that, are you?"

"I am," he replied impassively.

"That’s... unbelievable. We are rivals, or at least, the companies we lead are rivals; doesn’t matter if we’re in a relationship or not. I lost the deal due to my own stupid mistake so I don’t blame you for taking it on. But helping you with a problem you face while handling it? That’s a no, no for me." To hide the displeasure in her voice, she rapped her knuckles against the steering wheel as she spoke.

She scoffed, "I mean, why should I?"

"What are you saying, Love?" Brian’s endearment at the end sounded forced, but when he continued, his tone was neutral, "Sure, you lost the deal as a result of your own mistake, a very silly one at that. And I got it. But you are my girlfriend. You love me and I share the same feelings. Nothing stops you from helping me."

"Everything stops me, Brian. There’s something called work ethic—"

"Fuck work ethics!" Brian snapped, cutting her off in an inpatient manner. "Especially not in our case. We planned to merge the companies when we get married, didn’t we? If Walker Group breaks down before that happens, not only will I be unworthy of getting married to you, but Walker enterprises will also drag down the McCallum Group. I don’t think you would like that."

Avery sighed, biting her lips as she stayed silent for seconds.

"I wouldn’t," she agreed. "But like you said, a silly mistake on my part was what made the McCallum Group lost the deal. Then how exactly do you think I’d be able to help the ’smart you’ solve whatever problem you have?"

"Because I know you can," Brian replied, his voice filled with utmost certainty.

So much that it made Avery’s eyes cloud in suspicions, and without thinking twice, she pulled up at the side of the road. The car stopped but she kept the engine running, prepared to drive off at any moment.

"How do you know that?" she asked.

"I saw the papers last week. When we met at the training conference," Brian admitted. "Apart from that slight mistake, you had pretty much everything else that concerned the deal sorted out. Don’t try to lie because I did see it with my own eyes."

"And you also saw the mistake but didn’t think of pointing it out to me?" Avery questioned.

He hesitated for a short while and sucked in a deep breath before responding, "I’m sorry about that and I’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again."

Avery sighed, casting a sidelong glance at Brian’s name displayed on the phone’s screen as if his physical body was actually before her.

"Wait for me at home. I’ll be back in an hour or so," she finally said.

"That’s kinda late!" Brian exclaimed hurriedly before she could hang up. "Is there a way you could get home earlier? You see...I have to submit the final proposal early tomorrow."

"Emma told me to join her at Leeds. In her words, there’s someone we have to comfort so I can’t miss that. How about I just—"

Brian cut her off, "Ask your head butler to unlock your room for me. I’ll just find the papers I need and leave, promise."

"That’s risky, Brian," Avery tried to disagree, and again, he interrupted her before she could continue,

"It pains me that you don’t trust me as much as I do but then, if it makes you feel better, you can ask any of your cousins to accompany me. You trust them, don’t you?"

"What kind of question is that? Of course, I do," Avery said, the pitch of her voice increasing the more words she spoke. "Anyways, I’ll call Roberts now and let him know you are coming over. You two can barely stand each other so I’m sure he’ll definitely not cover up for you if you try to snoop around," she chuckled, hiding the seriousness of her words beneath the small chuckles.

"He won’t," Brian agreed. "I can’t seem to pinpoint a reason he doesn’t like me though. Do you by chance...have a guess?"

"Nah. But I’ll say it’s the same reason my other family members haven’t warmed up to you yet; your identity as a Walker. Let’s be sincere, your family doesn’t like me too. At least you can walk into my house without fear of coming back with a bullet in your head," she joked.

"Hundred percent agreed," Brian stated. "But don’t worry about it, my family will definitely look past the veil of hatred covering their eyes one day and they will see you for who you are. Just don’t give up on me before then."

"Same," Avery replied, "I have to go now. I’m running late already."

"Bye, Love. I love you," Brian said.

"Same," Avery reciprocated, a wry smile gracing her lips, "I’ll text Roberts now. Remember, don’t go into my room if he doesn’t accompany you."

She disconnected the call immediately she was done speaking and flung it onto the passenger’s seat on her side. She pulled away from the curb and joined the throng of cars stuck in traffic, discarding her earlier promise of texting Roberts to the back of her mind.

Within an hour, Avery had arrived at Leeds and was ushered in by one of the uniformed attendant when she showed him a reservation invite Emma had sent to her just a few minutes ago when she informed her that she had arrived.

The elites restaurant was rather busy for a monday night, but the soft glow of light from the chandeliers cast over the customers and their meals was enough to reduce the gloom in the atmosphere.

"Room 12," Avery notified the attendant who nodded in acknowledgement and continued to lead her across the lobby and down the long hallway to the back of the restaurant.

He stopped at the end of the corridor before pushing open a door that led to another door, and another one that finally opened into a much smaller lounge. It was obvious from the much more enigmatic decor, luxurious furniture, and oppressive air in the atmosphere that this section was only for the elites of the elites.

It occured to Avery just at that moment that her family would never book a room in this section.
