Chapter 79: Anger Diffusing...Drug?
Chapter 79: Anger Diffusing...Drug?
In reaction to Archie’s remark, the facial expressions of everyone else in the private room changed drastically, their thoughts evident in their eyes as they stared—and Avery glared—at him.
Emma’s face broke into a smile, all of her displeasure from earlier disappearing entirely from her eyes.
"Oh my god, did the sun rise in the west today? Arch just complimented Vee?!" she gasped, her eyes sparkling in delight. "You aren’t trying to say you like my sister, right?"
Arthur, with confusion dominating his face, was the one who replied her, "Definitely not, Emma. Arch is taken, he’s ma—"
"Arthur," Archie cut him off and as noisily as he could, dropped the whiskey glass he had been holding on the table. "Why don’t we keep our mouths off each other’s relationship matters?"
Even though he asked the question nicely, the others knew there was no other answer to it than a yes. Arthur nodded with a nonchalant shrug,
"Though I doubt you actually mean well with what you said, it feels good to hear you give Avery what looks like a compliment," he said. Waving Avery over as he patted the plush sofa beside him, he added, "Come sit here, Avery. You look exhausted."
"Of course, I am," Avery scoffed, her glare intensifying as she continued to maintain eye contact with Archie even as she talked. "I am exhausted and was invited here to join in comforting someone. Why was your ’Archie’ also invited then? Last I heard, he’s doesn’t have the slightest skill required to comfort anyone!"
Arthur sighed in frustration as he slumped against the backrest of the couch. His little sister and best friend fighting every time they found themselves in the same space was not a new occurrence and he had always tried to disrupt their meeting in the same place as much as possible, but not today. Avery was needed.
Archibald Donovan, best friend or not, always had a suffocating presence whenever he was angry. But for whatever fucking reason possible, the air was always much more breathable whenever Avery was present, which was the actual reason she had been invited tonight.
And it had worked. But that didn’t mean Arthur was in the right state of mind to handle their hate dripping comments against each other.
"And now?!" Avery’s voice snapped him out of her thoughts, "He said anyone would forgive me with the way I look and you guys said it feels good to hear him ’compliment’ me? Isn’t that another way to say I’m pitiful or pathetic or—"
"Vee!" Emma interrupted, the smile on her face stiffened in warning. "Can you not do that for tonight please, huh? Arch was invited because he’s the one we need to comfort and uhm, we feel your face is a perfect anger diffusing...drug so we invited you too. How could you have such low esteem when even I, the Emma McCAllum sometimes find myself envious of your beauty?"
Before Avery could reply, Arthur injected with a loud clap of his hands.
"Perfect, Emma! No one, not even Arch would dare to insult my princess in my presence. You believe me, don’t you?" he asked carefully, a small smile working at the corner of his lips that made Avery roll her eyes in disdain.
Her anger was melting already with the wise manner her siblings tried to placate her, but she wouldn’t satisfy Archie with the pleasure of seeing her wear a defeated expression so she decided to keep up her angered act.
"I definitely know I am pretty," she said to Emma, "But that doesn’t mean hearing someone imply that I’m ugly wouldn’t make me feel bad. And you, Arthur," she turned her face to her brother and continued, "Maybe if your friend learns how to apologize, he wouldn’t be as annoying as he currently is."
Throwing a hard glare at Archie for the last time, she hurried over to sit beside Arthur.
"After I considered what you guys said, I decided it would be selfish of me to keep my pretty face to myself when it could very well be the reason why a certain someone wants to live on, so I’m staying. Why are we comforting him?" She snickered, "Did someone finally break his heart?"
A chuckle escaped Archie’s lips, his eyes twinkling in amusement as his eyes followed Avery.
"What do you think?" he questioned.
Avery gritted her teeth in annoyance. Those damning blue eyes of his! Even when he was looking all nice, those eyes never failed to give off his true feelings and now...they were condescending as they stared at her.
She believed he had kept his mouth shut while her siblings called her pretty earlier not because he agreed with them, but because he probably didn’t want to offend Arthur.
"I wouldn’t bother myself to think about that," she seethed. "Now, will someone tell me why we are comforting him?"
"Didn’t you see the news?" Archie raised his brows in surprise.
"About? Is anyone under public fire?" As the questions flew out of her mouth, Avery already took out her phone and was checking the top searches for the day. Her eyes flew over the top three that had Archie’s name and searched for any that had her family’s name, breathing out a sigh of relief when she found none. "Why, there’s nothing about us here?"
"Are you sure you don’t need glasses?" Arthur leaned over, clicking on the number one highest searched topics. "Why the hell do you find it hard following news of the first tier families in the country?"
While she waited for the page to load, Avery shrugged, "On the contrary, I don’t see any reason to follow news about them. First rate families are old money anyways, not like following their news will make my family part of them."
"Still..." Emma shook her head in fake disappointment, "Don’t you yearn for gossip at least?"
"I don’t," Avery deadpanned.
Just then, the page loaded completely and her eyes ran over the headline of the post, her eyes widening in shock.
