Chapter 54: Advices.
She read the heading out loud, "McCAllum SISTERS: EMMA and AVERY’S DOMINANCE."
The article had been written by one of Emma’s friend, who only wrote it after taking permission from the two sisters. Its content was based on the similarities and differences between Avery and Emma, and the former could vividly remember her mood the day the magazine arrived at her office.
Not because of the contents of the magazine but because Emma was the one who had brought it to her; she had been delighted. The sisters had maintained the happy mood until they got home and found shredded pieces of the magazine in their grandfather’s study. The old man was angry and without telling his granddaughters the reason why, ordered that that particular edition of the magazine was to be banned.
"If there’s to be a article about you two girls, why not add your cousin sister?!" he had said.
Months later, Avery had been opportuned to find out the reason her grandfather had done that. Apparently, he had overhead Valentina talking to her parents on how she felt left out from the family. When she found out then, Avery had shrugged it off without much thought since she didn’t know her uncle was adopted.
However, thinking about it a few days ago, she had finally discovered the reason her grandfather did that was to erase any form of animosity that might want to rouse in Valentina’s mind and as an extension, her parents and brother.
"Look at this, Grandpa," she muttered, her thumb rubbing against the page. "Those people didn’t need your protection. In fact, they never felt inferior for once...they were only bidding their time."
Avery looked up to stare at her blank expression and hardened eyes in the mirror, as she let the page go.
"Miss Donovan?" she jolted.
Morphing her face into the most excited expression ever, Avery turned around to face the new entrant into the room. From the eagerness evident in her caramel brown eyes, one would find it hard to know they had been filled with hatred just a few moments ago.
’’That’s me; Ava Donovan. Are you here to escort me?’’ She raised her hand, attracting the attention of the middle aged man standing at the door who approached her immediately.
’’Miss Donovan, thank God I found you easily. Did the security man misdirect you?" He asked. Seeing the small furrow in Avery’s brows, he quickly introduced himself,"Leroy James here. Nice to meet you."
Her eyes widening for a split second, she was quick to regain her composure and respond with a small bow.
’’Absolutely pleased to meet you too."
Giving a small nod of acknowledgement, Leroy led the way out of the room without asking questions as to what she was doing in a room meant for someone else.
"And about this room...’’ Avery trailed off, as she had not prepared any excuse to give if she was caught in this room.
"It’s alright. You asked the security guard for directions, right? The old man keeps directing every visitor up to this dressing room. Can’t blame him though, since he used to love Emma McCAllum the most, God bless her soul," Leroy stated, changing the topic of discussion immediately, ’’Were you able to read through the script? I understand we gave so little a time between finalizing the cast and organising the script reading but Broken Hearts need to be shot as soon as possible. If not, there’s a possibility it will end up never seeing the light of the day.’’
’’I read through the script earlier and I don’t think I’d have any difficulties adhering with whatever schedule you might have set for me. I won’t be appearing more than 6 times anyways,’’ Avery replied, turning fast enough to see the director’s face brighten with a smile. A little bit curious about his story just now with the old security guard and Emma, she decided to keep it to herself and just go with the flow. She could make research about that later but for now, accept the free excuse that had been made for her.
’’That’s diligent of you, Miss Donovan,’’ he praised. ’’Now, I only have to persuade Valentina McCallum and Jodi Sinclair; I hope they agree to this too,’’
’’Good luck in persuading them,’’ Avery wished, her eyes wandering aimlessly around the conference room they had just entered, to spot Jodi sitting at one end of the board table placed in the centre of the room and surrounded by chairs. She winked at her and the latter returned it with a wave, an exchange Leroy was quick to catch.
’’You are friends with Miss Sinclair?’’
Though his question sounded more like a statement, Avery felt obliged to answer him.
’’Yeah. She’s been my friend since I returned to the country a few weeks ago,’’ she supplied additional information, knowing she would need someone to corroborate her story if later on, the similarities between herself and Avery McCallum was finally discovered. Even though Avery had changed her hair color from black to brown, every other thing was pretty much the same except that she tended to use makeup these days.
’’Really? Now the reason you have no agency representing you is so obvious. Miss Sinclair is known for rejecting offers from agencies without batting an eye. I’d say that’s one of the reason she’s yet to be popular even though she’s one of the most talented and luckiest newcomers. You are another, I can feel it,’’ he noted.
’’Another what?’’
’’Lucky and talented newcomer, with your looks and attitude, from what I’ve seen. I will only advise that you settle with a stable agency sooner than later-’’
’’Do you think I will receive offers this early?’’ Avery asked.
Leroy replied, ’’I know you will. You see, Miss Donovan, not everyone has to work or have connections in this industry. For some, they have the luck to be catapulted into stardom within a few months. They will only need to exert themselves and create connections to maintain that position.’’ As he was still talking, Avery had to walk beside him on her journey across the room to sit beside Jodi.
’’Look at you, Miss Donovan. You came here to audition for an extra role, didn’t get the chance to do so yet you ended up getting a supporting character role. What’s luck if it isn’t that?’’
’’Of course! And thank you so much for seeing the good in me and deciding to cast me.’’
’’You are welcome. I hope you remember this when you make it big one day; I could use a lot of help from a top star,’’ he joked, a small laugh escaping his lips. ’’This agency will only clip your wings so as tempting as it seems, I don’t want to invite you to sign with us.’’
Flashing him a polite smile, Avery repeated her appreciation, ’’Thanks again, Mr Leroy. I will always remember this.’’
He nodded and patted her back as lightly as he could before turning away from her.
Pulling a chair out, Avery was about to take her seat when the door opened and her very familiar ex-cousin waltzed in.
