Chapter 52: One Year Old.
Music Rec: Spectre 2.0 by Alan Walker ft Steve Aoki.
Jodi regretted her words the moment they dropped from her mouth. She knew she had hurt him once again, and his eyes showed just how much she did. Shit!
"I...I am sorry. That w-was a slip," she stuttered, lowering her gaze in disappointment. Disappointment in herself.
"No." Even his voice was laced with pain and anger which she knew was directed at himself.
"I am sorry, Neil, really. I...I shouldn’t have mentioned that. It was a mis–" she tried to apologize.
A wry smile starting to form on his lips, he interjected, "You don’t have to be sorry, Jodi. Mistake or not, it was still my fault and I will do my best to make it up to you."
"No!" Jodi snapped. "Both of us are to blame. You...for not controlling yourself and I, for being stubborn and bringing that upon myself. I am really sorry for blaming you just now when we were both at fault." Still too ashamed to raise her head and meet his gaze, she continued to stare down at her feet while tracing the patterns of the rug with her toe to hide her nervousness.
"Don’t try to make me feel better or lessen my guilt in any way, Jodi. It won’t work and do not worry, I wasn’t expecting forgiveness anytime soon."
"Neil..." she raised her head, her expression somber as she tried to convince him that outburst was really a slip, but he didn’t let her conclude her statement before chiming in,
"I will go back to sleep now. You should do the same and while doing that, rid your mind of the notion that the driver I had a one night stand with exactly one year ago is any less beautiful than those models who came with Alice Sherman today. She was gorgeous..." And with the wry smile on his face erasing, he turned around to leave.
Jodi watched his retreating back with irritation, not at him, but at herself. Though she never expected a useless girl like herself who came from a remote island to be wise, she still couldn’t believe she was this stupid. Whenever things were starting to go well between them and he happened to spare her a smile or two, she could trust herself to destroy everything within hours. Just like she just did now.
"By the way, Jodi..."
Her face brightened, hearing him call her from somewhere in the hallway where she couldn’t see.
"Yes Neil?" she responded immediately, starting to walk around the sofa to join him. If he was actually waiting for her there, then she could take the chance to apologize and force him to accept her apology.
’If possible, I could also—’ her thoughts were halted when he continued,
"Happy one year anniversary to us. If you have anywhere or anything you will need me to get you as gift, let me know before night."
Jodi stopped dead in her tracks unable to take another step forward. She could feel he had left the hallway and that she had just lost her chance to apologize. Instead of that, she had successfully created another wall between them on the day their relationship turned one year old. Even though it was already fake, she had just ruined it more, it seemed.

The Litters Agency.
"I will definitely find an appropriate place to wait for Jodi. You don’t have to stick around," Avery reassured the driver for the second time that morning.
She could understand the man’s concern since the time was just 6am and even the agency seemed like it was not yet open to visitors. Though the script reading was not starting for the next three hours, she came earlier in hope that she could catch a glimpse of Valentina McCAllum or anyone else.
"Alright, Miss Ava. I will be waiting for your call."
"Thanks, Dylan." She flashed him a warm smile and even waved as he drove off. Turning around, she made her way to sit under a tree a few metres away from the building’s entrance.
A minute had barely passed when an Uber pulled up in the same spot Avery had alighted a few minutes ago. She looked up with wary eyes, and only relaxed when she saw the person who alighed.
’’Jodi!’’ Avery called from where she was sitting beneath the tree. ’’I thought you had lectures to attend, was I wrong?’’ She rose to her feet and approached Jodi who was still busy talking to the driver.
’’Nah, you were only wrong in regarding me as a student who attends classes regularly,’’ the former laughed, quickening her footsteps to join Avery halfway. ’’I had a meeting with a prospective agency and well...for one of the best agencies in the country, their standards were surely high.’’
’’Not for you though,’’ Avery stated with a tone of absolute certainty. Turning to see Jodi’s expression when she said that, she chuckled when she saw the smug smile on the latter’s face. ’’You live on compliments, don’t you?’’
’’I do, Sweetie. I love compliments because it really does show I have come a long way.’’
’’Long way...’’ Avery echoed, curiosity evident in her eyes.
’’Yeah, a very long long way. I guess someday we would find the time to talk about families and our childhood; maybe the upcoming summer break. What do you think?’’
’’Maybe,’’ Avery replied curtly. If such day really came for her and Jodi to exchange family information and childhood memories, then she was sure she would only be listening while Jodi did the talking. There was no way she could talk about her real family and neither did she know anything about the real Ava Donovan.
’’Just maybe?’’ Jodi frowned, not bothering to hide her sadness.
Rolling her eyes dramatically, Avery took that as her cue to change the topic of discussion, ’’Oh my, Jodi. Let’s talk about the agency instead; how was the meeting?’’
