Avery's Game Of Revenge -
Chapter 148: Vice Chancellor’s Office
Chapter 148: Vice Chancellor’s Office
"Exactly! I haven’t been seeing other finance men lately because of him. Cause of the whole ’i have to stick to my boyfriend’s side and support him with my all’ shit. How interesting would it be if we were to meet their rivals and go for lunch with them?"
Avery’s brows rose at that.
"Archie... I mean, The A² Corp. has rivals?" she asked, surprise evident in her voice.
Jodi cast her a quick glance.
"Who are you and where’s my friend, Ava? How can you not know if your husband has rivals or not, and who they are?"
Hearing that, Avery felt like facepalming herself in embarrassment. Once again, she felt like she didn’t really know Archie, while he, on the other hand, seemed to know everything about her, even things she had never told anyone before.
"It’s... I was just trying to know what stupid person has the nerves to go against A² Corp," she lied. "If he considers them worthy to be his rivals, Archie would have mentioned them to me at least once."
Jodi shrugged. "Well, that’s true. It’s no surprise that Mr Donovan doesn’t see them as rivals since they don’t really compare to him anyway."
"Then why do you refer to them as his rivals?"
"Because they announced themselves as such," Jodi deadpanned, followed by a chuckle. "Can you imagine that? They are more on the level of Benedict Sherman than Mr Donovan, yet they call out A² every year and compare themselves at every turn and companies bid. They literally proclaimed themselves as A² rivals and everyone began to call them that."
"Oh... And you want to go on a date with them?" Avery asked, incredulous.
At this point, they’d arrived at the ground floor and hailed a taxi which they boarded immediately. Neither of them remembered that someone was supposed to be waiting for them in the garage.

Lecture Hall 121, NewDun Elites University.
The spacious hall was filled to the capacity with over 100 students packed into comfortable, cushioned seats. Soft, fluorescent lightning illuminated the room, and the gentle hum of the air conditioner created a soothing background noise.
The professor, a middle aged man with round glasses perched on the rim of his nose, droned on at the podium, his words blended together in a mesmerizing stream. The students lethargic posture and glazed expressions mirrored the dull atmosphere that pervaded the lecture hall.
Heads nodded, eyes drooped, shoulders slumped, notes remained unwritten, laptops laid idle, and phones hid behind discreetly raised notebooks as the clock ticked on.
The lecture was so boring that Avery was already drifting to sleep at just twenty minutes into the start. Pushing her chin off the hand that supported it, she busied herself with scribbling little stick figures on the back of her notebook, and murmured under her breath on how she should have gone with Archie to the date instead of coming here.
If only the class representative didn’t announce that today’s class was important and their attendance would contribute to the grades outside of school, then she would have left minutes ago.
As the lecture dragged on, the room grew quieter, with more students succumbing to sleep or distraction. The professor’s voice became a gentle lullaby, weaving a spell of boredom and disinterest. The clock ticked slowly towards the end of the lecture, as the students waited impatiently for their release.
When it finally ended an entire half hour later, Avery packed her books and rose to her feet, prepared to leave the hall alongside the first throng of students when the professor’s voice pierced through the crowd to reach her.
"Is Ava Donovan present?"
Even before she could register the question, some of the other students already answered for her.
"Over there, Sir!"
"Ava Donovan is on the sixth row, eighth column, Professor!" someone else said.
"She’s the one in the tank top!"
"The white tank top!"
Avery released an exasperated breath. Seems like she was getting popular among her course mates... the good kind of popular, as majority of them were looking at her with slight awe and curiosity in their eyes, and not hatred. But that aside, why was the professor asking for her?
"Head to the Vice chancellor’s office, Donovan. He requested to see you."
’The vice chancellor?’ Avery thought, her face contorting into a frown. ’What business do I have with him?’ Watching as the professor went back to gathering his textbooks and devices, she realized the man wasn’t going to supply any further information and eased herself out of her seat row.
As she stepped out of the hall into the cool evening air, she lamented not bringing a blazer or jacket with her as she turned and headed in the direction of the Vice chancellor’s office in a building block not far from the lecture hall she just came out from.
Minutes later, she was tucking her phone into her backpack after texting Jodi to go home on her own and texting Archie she was done with lectures and would be meeting him soon, as she placed a gentle knock on the door of the VC’s office and pushed it open without waiting for a reply.
The secretary outside had informed her that she might not get an answer if she knocked, as it was highly possible that the Vice chancellor was busy. Pushing the door open, she stepped in with a polite smile pasted on her face. The large executive chair behind the enormous desk had its back facing her, so she was unable to see the face of the man sitting in it. She ducked her head slightly.
"Good evening, Mr Hall. I am Ava Donovan. Professor Thompson said you requested that I report to your office."
"I did."
Wait... that voice. It should be impossible.
Avery’s brows furrowed at the familiar voice, but she didn’t say anything, waiting to see the face of whoever it was.
"Hello?"
The chair was now turning, albeit slowly, but she could already see the silky black hair, frame of the person sitting in it, and make out who it was.
"Arch Donovan!" she snapped. "What are you doing in my Vice chancellor’s office?"
"Nice to meet you too, Ava." Archie’s facial expression was grim. "What are you doing in my friend’s office?"
"He asked for me!"
"Dominic did? Isn’t he supposed to be in the hospital right now... with his wife who delivered a baby last night? How could he have ’asked for’ you?" Archie asked flatly, his tone showing that he wasn’t the least bit interested in her answer since he knew what it was already.
Avery’s expression tensed. She couldn’t particularly say he was lying, as she hadn’t been consistent at the university for the past few days to know the VC was absent, but she also didn’t think he was right. If he was, how was she to explain Professor Thompson telling her the Vice chancellor asked for her, and the secretary out there telling her to come in without knocking?
There could only be one explanation to that...
Folding her arms across her chest, partly to look more imposing and partly to warm herself up, she glared at the man behind the desk.
"Why did you call me here using the Vice chancellor’s name?"
Archie ignored her question. "Good job, Genius. You figured it out so soon," he said, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
Avery’s mouth opened to bit back a snarky reply, but she closed it back when she noticed the low temperature in the room wasn’t from the Air conditioner alone, but also from the mood of the man sitting just a few metres in front of her.
Archie was not smiling. In place of that, he had a cold look on his face and a glare in his eyes, one whose intensity his glass did nothing to reduce.
Her resolve faltered and she took a step forward.
"Hey, are you alright?" Is there a problem?"
"You are asking?"
Her eyes still on him, Avery switched on her phone and quickly went to check the trending searches. Her name wasn’t there, and neither was his. So what could this be about?
"Am I in trouble?" she asked.
"Have a seat, Miss Donovan," Archie ordered. "I called you so I should be the one posing the questions here, don’t you think?"
A tentative look in her eyes, Avery obeyed him and slid into the seat in front of her.
"Should I be scared?" she murmured.
"Depends," he deadpanned, sliding his phone across the table to her front. "How the hell was last night boring, Angel?"
