Avery's Game Of Revenge
Chapter 149: Carrying His Baby?

Chapter 149: Carrying His Baby?

Avery lowered her eyes to the screen of the phone where the voice message she’d sent earlier, through Jodi’s phone was playing.

’...are actually busy and have better things to think of, than an ordinary date and a boring last night. I won’t be coming down now. I have classes to attend. If I finish early, I might have mercy on your ass and join you on whatever unexciting date you’ve planned up. Bye... Donovan."

"So?" Archie’s rubbed his thumb on his lower lip, impatience oozing from his whole being. "Tell me what was boring about last night, and explain why you think the date I planned would be unexciting."

Avery laughed, trying to wave it off as a joke but his grim expression told her he needed genuine answers and won’t be stopping until he got exactly that.

"You didn’t come here just to ask me that, right?" she asked with a careful tone.

"I did," Archie deadpanned. "And you won’t leaving that seat until you give me satisfactory answers." His eyes darkened, a hint of vulnerability flickering across his face. "Do you really think I don’t have the ability to plan something exciting?"

’Yes!’ Avery was about to spit out the lie when her eyes met his own earnest ones, and saw the seriousness written all over his face. He was asking this seriously, and he deserved a serious answer.

"I don’t think so," she murmured, lowering her voice as she added, "And I’m sorry."

His face didn’t lose the tense lines etched all over it.

"For?"

Avery sucked in a puff of breath, bracing herself before letting the words spill out of her mouth.

"Last night wasn’t boring and I know whatever you have planned must be really exciting. I was also happy you came to pick me up personally for the date, and I would have gone with you if not for the class. And also—" she paused to catch her breath, before proceeding, "You were at fault too. How could you send that kind of text through Jodi’s phone? What if she read it out loud and many other people heard her?!"

Her accusatory tone didn’t affect Archie one bit, as he only raised his brows.

"And what exactly would be wrong with so many people hearing that you had an interesting last night with your boyfriend, since you can’t tell most of them that you are married?" he questioned, realizing he had to make his words as realistic as possible for this innocent wife of his to understand life isn’t as complex as she thinks. "I mean, most of this people you dont want finding out, probably had far more steamy nights than you did. So tell me, what is wrong with them hearing?"

"You are asking me that?" Avery glowered, her voice tinged in disbelief like she couldn’t believe he was asking her that. Wasn’t the answer obvious?

Well, she thought, after his explanation on how many of them must have had far more steamy nights than she did, the answer didn’t seem obvious any longer. She still had to keep up a strong front though.

"Of course, I’m asking you that. Who else is to ask? Jodi has a boyfriend, and I’m damn sure they have gone thousands of kilometres ahead of us, who are supposed to have been married for three years. You think that will surprise her? I’d bet that a million grand on her being curious of why we haven’t tried for a child in three years. You think I’m wrong?"

"No, but..."

"But nothing," he interrupted, his lips curving into a slight smirk as he asked, "What if I just get you pregnant?"

Avery’s mouth hung open in disbelief, all words having evaded her. What... What did she just hear?

"Why do you look so shocked?" Archie chuckled, his face showing how much he was enjoying this new turn of their conversation. "Pregnancy is the best way to proclaim that you are in a relationship and you have gone all the way to home base, isn’t it? If I do that, you won’t have to answer unnecessary questions and everyone just knows you’ve done the deed, with the most handsome man in the world at that." He smiled.

"What the hell are you saying?" Was all Avery could manage to say, unable to hide her flustered state.

For the first time since she met this man before her, she wasn’t seeing him as an enemy, her brother’s best friend, her savior, her fake husband, or an ordinary handsome and sexy man.

She was seeing him as a real husband! She was seeing herself walking down the aisle with this man. The only thing about this thought was that it was a bit strange, in the sense that it seemed more like a memory than an ordinary mental image of a scene she wanted to experience in the future.

"What in heaven are you hearing? Doesn’t it sound like bliss; carrying my baby?" Archie’s voice snapped her out of her thoughts. Simply talking about her carrying his baby sent all forms of blissful feelings coursing through his veins, but what did she think about it?

"It sounds like the opposite of bliss, actually..." Avery muttered beneath her breath. Right before her eyes, she saw the smile fall off his face and his expression close off, as he stood up without a word, and headed out of the room.

"Hey!" she called, "We are not done talking!"

When she got no reply, she hurried out of the office after him, sparing the wide eyed secretary no mind as they passed by her desk. "Archie!" she was almost yelling.

He turned around, his eyes narrowed into slits.

"Excuse me, Miss? Who are you?"

Avery almost rolled her eyes but stopped herself from doing it at the very last minute. She had no idea this man could be so petty. He was a whole decade older than her for goodness’ sake.

"Archie..."

"Don’t call me that. Only my wife, the woman who had an exciting last night, who looks forward to the date we are supposed to have today, and who thinks carrying my baby would be bliss, is allowed to call me that," he declared, his tone firm and unwavering. Then he turned and continued his way to the large glass doors.

"That’s... Arch, why are you— Ouch!" she let out a loud wince, figuring that the only way to get him to stop was by pretending shs hit her leg. Archie was walking too fast for her to be able to meet up, and she hoped he would slow down if he heard she was in pain.

However, instead of simply slowing down, Archie completely stopped dead in his tracks and turned around sharply. "What happened?"

"My leg," she replied absentmindedly. Her mind was focused solely on the fact that he stopped for her even though he was angry, to the extent that she could only watch in awe as he walked back to her, a deep furrow in his brows.

In the twinkling of an eye, he was on his knees before her with his hand slightly raising her skirt.

"There doesn’t seem to be any bruise here. Where are you feeling... Ava, where is your anklet?"

"Uh?"

"Your anklet. Where is it?"

Avery glanced down at her unadorned ankle and it hit her there and then. The anklet was the missing accessory she had been thinking about, back at the apartment. Instantly, she zipped her backpack open and began fishing through it, her brows creasing with confusion the more time that passed by.

"I... I think I lost it. Or someone stole it from me. But don’t worry," she hurriedly reassured him. "I will find it. I had to take it off because it was a scene where I had to wear a bathrobe. I didn’t want it on camera."

Avery thought she felt his thumb caress the spot on her ankle where the anklet was supposed to be, but she couldn’t be sure as he stood up the next second, looked her straight in the eye and said, "Good luck finding it."

Then he turned away from her and continued walking, this time not stopping until he got to the car park behind the Vice chancellor’s office block. He walked straight to his car and pulled open the passenger side’s door, leaving it open to walk around the car to the driver’s side.

He settled himself in, locked his door, and had started the car before Avery finally got there, totally short of breath.

"Hey..." she started, but he cut her off with a, "I have to listen to the recordings of an important meeting. Do you mind?"
