Chapter 101: Strength and Weakness.
Chapter 101: Strength and Weakness.
’’Everything about me screams what?’’
’’That your family background is slightly, in your words not mine, similar to my family background,’’ Charlotte replied, ’’It’s so obvious that life didn’t treat you as bad as it did, me. Now, tell me. What does your dad do?’’
’’He’s dead,’’ Avery deadpanned, without so much as a blink of the eye that could give her away. This wasn’t a lie though...the lies were yet to come. She almost scoffed at the shocked look that dominated her partners face within seconds.
’’What?! Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry. I had no idea and I said...’’ Charlotte trailed off, adjusting her glass nervously, an action that strangely reminded Avery of Archie.
Well...not that strange since they both wore glasses, but why was everything reminding her of him recently? She shook her head slightly to clear his face off her mind; there was no time to think of that now.
’’You know I’m really sorry, right?’’ Charlotte’s voice sounded apologetic.
’’Yeah, it actually kinda made me happy that you thought for a moment that my family’s better than yours. We are much worse, Charlotte.’’
’’How did you... then?’’
’’You must have read one or more of the posts I made to defend myself. Where I mentioned that I’ve been abroad since we graduated high school, with my mom and...little brother?’’ Avery refrained from snickering when Charlotte gave a small nod. Of course, she’d read it.
With the level of intelligence she knew Charlotte possessed, Avery knew the former was definitely not believing what she saw online. It was more likely for her to attempt investigation all by herself, and the only way she could do that was to study the posts on the internet to see if there would be a loophole that could lead her to the truth. The truth on whether the Ava that approached her in school was really who she said she was, or if she was the murderer said to be dead, and was now back to complete her sinister plans under the guise of being a new person.
’Sadly... there’s no truth to discover,’ Avery declared inwardly.
She continued her fabricated story out loud, "Actually, what I didn’t say was that we escaped from this country on the eve of my graduation to escape from the loan sharks. We uhm...we had it hard abroad, and I had to do a lot of well...odd jobs, so we could survive..."
"You don’t have to tell me everything if it makes you uncomfortable," Charlotte interrupted her, the calculated look on her face now replaced with sympathy.
"No, it’s alright. I always wished there was someone I could say all this too," Avery resisted, dismissing the latter’s concern. "After a while, the odd jobs were no longer bringing in enough money. So I had to switch to more...shameful jobs. Anyway, one thing led to another and here I am."
"Oh..." Charlotte whispered.
Avery nodded in affirmation.
"Yeah, that’s it. By the way, that’s also how I got the role with Stuart Salvador," she stated, inhaling sharply. "I can and will do anything...as long as it ensures the safety and well-being of my family."
"Same here," Charlotte admitted. "I will do anything for them. They had me when most people their age were already getting their grandchildren, and have suffered so much for me afterwards. It’ll kill me if anything happens to them so before that can happen, I’ll take down whatever poses a danger to them."
Avery smiled, but didn’t say anything else.
’You can’t blame me, Charlotte. You will take down whatever poses a danger to your selfish parents. Doesn’t that mean I’m allowed to do more than that, to those who contributed to the death of my selfless family?’ she asked herself, a positive reply resounding from deep within her.
Charlotte cleared her throat, "Okay! Since you told me your story already, I’ll tell you mine, even though it’s short and completely useless."
"How useless could your story be compared to mine?" Avery replied, a forced laugh accompanying the question. "The sun’s burning hot. Let’s find a shelter while you talk?"
Charlotte nodded in agreement and began talking as the both of them resumed their walk, "The current head of the McCallum family is a nice man. In fact, he’s been paying my tuition fees ever since I was in high school and also sponsored my mom’s surgery two years ago."
"Really?" Avery could not help but scoff. Jon was a nice man? The man who opposed the idea when she once proposed that their company create a charity foundation, saying they could do that when she grew the company to be on par with a second tier family’s?
But then...this news didn’t surprise her. It was like she had been expecting it. Butler Ross hadn’t betrayed their family all of a sudden. He had been in on the plan for a while now, and his compensation was Charlotte’s tuition fees through high school, his wife’s surgery fees, and probably the laying off compensation he was paid after the incident.
She forced herself out of her thoughts to hear Charlotte still talking,
"...my dad was so scared and shocked, but he had to say the truth. And though the new head of the family recognized his struggles, he had no choice but to fire my father. My dad wasn’t willing to stay anyway; he says he feels guilty to have been the one to serve poisoned tea to his long time boss."
"So he hit the jackpot after he was fired?" Avery questioned.
"No, he was settled," Charlotte corrected. "Privately. Mr. Roberts McCallum was the one who came by our house to settle him. Their family’s is filled with such nice individuals."
"I see," Avery hummed, a streak of sarcasm evident in her tone. She had been right after all.
Butler Ross was an enemy; and his daughter, Charlotte, was his biggest strength and weakness. As long as she had Charlotte by her side, one large part of her revenge game would be solved.
The part of the game where she needed a witness.
