Avery's Game Of Revenge -
Chapter 102: Captions.
Chapter 102: Captions.
Avery blinked in confusion, as she read and re-read the sign just above her head for the nth time since they alighted from the taxi that brought them here.
This was... a cemetery; a private one.
’Want to come with me to somewhere? It’s just like a ten minute drive from here,’ Charlotte had offered, and she had agreed, thinking it was a place that would trigger more secrets to be exposed.
Why would Charlotte want to come here? As far as she knew, the report Neil sent her concerning the Ross’ only daughter hadn’t mentioned anything about a dead family member. Especially not one rich enough to be resting in a cemetery as ’prestigious’ as this...from what she was seeing.
She turned, ’’Uhm...Charlotte, are you sure I won’t be intruding your privacy if I come along? This place seems like...’’ she trailed off, so as to prevent a mistake of saying something that might hurt the girl.
’’It’s alright,’’ Charlotte reassured her, ’’You don’t need to worry about having to console me. I’m not here to see dead family member.’’
’’Really?’’ Avery echoed, a tinge of relief underlying her voice. Even though she had followed Charlotte here without a single pure intention in mind, she also wasn’t here to bask in the sight of her in a sorrowful state.
Charlotte nodded. ’’Let’s go in.’’
She led the way to the large, imposing gates of the building where a security guard stood. Making sure she was a few steps behind Charlotte, Avery didn’t bother listening in on whatever the former was saying to the guard. Instead, she took out her phone to see if Archie had replied her message from the day before. But nah, he didn’t even read it yet.
She scrolled down, unbothered by the sight of countless unread messages from her new ’friends’ from school, and only clicked on Jodi’s, her brows furrowing when she read the contents of the text.
Did you see the trending search, Ava?
Then another one: Are you alright with it?
And the last one was a link that she clicked on immediately. Jodi wouldn’t have sent the texts to her in such quick succession if it wasn’t something she had to see immediately. Not when she was supposed to be busy on set; for the rest of the week in fact. Jodi’s absence was the only reason Avery had the time to meet up with Charlotte and leave campus with her without rousing suspicions and answering questions she didn’t want to.
In fact, this was the most suitable period to create whatever connection she needed to create with Charlotte since Jodi would be off campus for almost all the days left in the month. On the other hand, the character Avery was representing had only six appearances in the whole movie, so she wasn’t expected at the location except she was notified it was her turn. Life of a side character.
’’Come on in, Ava.’’
Hearing Charlotte call out to her, Avery briefly raised her eyes from the phone to meet her eyes.
’’Visitors are also allowed in?’’
’’Of course,’’ Charlotte replied, ’’Technically, we are both visitors. None of us would be allowed in if reverse was the case.’’
Avery nodded and followed her through the doors, returning her eyes to the screen of her phone where the page of the link Jodi sent was now fully loaded. It was Litters Agency official account, and she knew immediately that whatever Jodi wanted her to see had to do with the movie: Broken Hearts.
This was the account that would be used to publicize the movie, after all.
She scrolled down to see the most recent post, her brows twitching as she read the caption out loud.
Shares identical features with a murderer in reality, will Ava Donovan show her skills in that aspect in the upcoming movie? #BrokenHearts
There was another post right below.
Unable to bash a dead traitor? Litters Agency grants you the opportunity to bash Sloane Atkinson! #BrokenHearts @AvaD
Jodi’s call came in just then, distracting Avery from reading the rest of the posts. She swiped the dial to pick the call, releasing a forced chuckle as soon as the call connected.
"You okay, Ava?"
"I am," Avery lied, "Manager James told us the team in charge of publicity might go overboard, remember?"
There was loud sigh from the other end, "Yeah, I know but... Don’t you think this is too much? You can complain, you know that, right?"
"We should let it be. I maxed out my luck when I got this role anyway; with all that happened, it’s only normal that I pay for it with something," Avery replied.
"Still," Jodi insisted, "This doesn’t feel right, at all. I bet Mr Donovan will be furious when he returns and sees what’s going on. You have to talk to Manager James yourself, or he’ll do it on your behalf. And I don’t think either of us, including Manager James, wants that."
Avery laughed out loud, intentionally making her strides shorter so there could be a distance between her and Charlotte.
"Whoops, Jo! You sure you aren’t my husband instead?" she joked. Receiving no reply from the other side, she continued, "Don’t worry about it. He won’t be coming back for one more week."
"This kind of news doesn’t disappear as early as it arrived, Ava. Did you check the comments? And your personal account? The haters would have arrived there and camped their tent; one visit to your page will reveal everything even if Mr Donovan doesn’t arrive for the next one year."
Avery sighed, "Okay then. I heard you, and I’ll place a call to Manager James immediately I drop this call. He’ll pick if he’s less busy."
"He is," Jodi reassured her. A hint of annoyance crept into her voice as she added, "We’re taking a thirty minutes break to help our female lead work up tears. What kind of actress can’t call up tears as soon as she wants to?"
"Uhm..., I’d say Valentina McCAllum?"
