Chapter 82: Chapter 81 You Saved Me First
(Back to Present)
The rays of the sunlight filtered through the curtains, landing on Lucian’s sleeping face. He squinted his eyes, blocking the rays of the sun with his arms.
His eyes opened to the discomfort, a sad smile slowly form on his lips, the dream had left a bitter taste in his mouth.
"Breakfast is ready," a voice rang from the living room.
Lucian stumbled to his feet, his ruffled hair brushed past his eyes, he made his way following the aroma of the food. The the rich and creamy smell of pancakes and tea invaded his nostrils. His mouth watered in anticipation.
He entered the dining room, which had a dining table, with four chairs. Lucian looked around before taking his seat. The cook was nowhere to be seen. He shrugged his shoulders, before he began to dig into his food without uttering a word.
"You can’t say thank you?" the stranger mused, before taking his seat.
"Thank you, Dimitri," he said, his voice muffled as he was still chewing on his food. His eyes were vacant, without a speck of an emotion
"So... Do you remember anything from last night?" Dimitri paused, his eyes observing his reaction.
"No. Nothing... except when Olivia went back for Abigail."
Dimitri sighed, his eyes darted about, he didn’t know whether to tell him about what happened or not. If he didn’t and Lucian happens to find out later, then he would skin him alive.
"You were stabbed and poisoned," Dimitri began, causing Lucian to pause as he listened. "The poison was a rare one, a vailroot. When I came for you, Olivia was trying to bring you back to safety..."
"She came back for me?" Lucian interrupted. His eyes widening in its socket.
Dimitri nodded his head hesitantly. "Yes, and not only that, she saved you. She helped you disperse the poison. But I don’t know if she is okay now..."
The chair screeched against the floor. Lucian dashed inside his room. He quickly changed his clothes before rushing out the door.
"She’s at Abigail’s place," Dimitri shouted behind him. Lucian quickly changed his direction to the opposite side of the corridor.
....
Olivia’s eyes snapped open, slowly observing her surroundings. This wasn’t her dorm. Where was she? She held her head as headache shot through her skull.
Her thoughts wandered to last night, the hot marking pain. she got on her feet, searching for a mirror, but she couldn’t find any in the room. She walked out and luckily found her way to the bathroom.
Olivia stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her fingers gently pushed the hair away from her face, as she searched for what had caused the scalding pain.
She believed it must have left a marking, but to her dismay, there was nothing. Her skin was smooth, as if what had happened was her imagination. She sighed before holding her head in between her palms.
"What is happening to me?" she muttered to herself.
’Lucian.’ At that thought, she ran out of the room, searching for traces of him. But he was nowhere to be found. She only saw Abigail sleeping on the couch, her snoring shaking the walls of the room.
Olivia’s lips curved in disgust. Abigail’s leg was flying in a different direction—one was on top of the couch and the other on the ground. Her hands were wide apart—one hovering above the ground, the other above her head.
Olivia shook her head before kicking her leg on the floor. Abigail jerked up from her sleep. "No. The vailroot poison is rare and it is very difficult to cure," Abigail shouted, before falling back to sleep.
Olivia hissed before pulling her up by her shoulder. "Abigail! Where is Lucian?" she asked, her voice held urgency and seriousness. She needed to know if he was okay... and why he had almost killed her last night.
Abigail’s eyes snapped open. She angrily stared at Olivia before removing her hand from her shoulders. "Why won’t you let me sleep in peace?" she snapped.
"I’m sorry. I just wanted to know where he is," Olivia’s voice became low and soft.
Abigail scoffed. She felt like throwing a tantrum. "The stranger took him away," she grumpily answered.
Olivia sighed before sitting on the couch. "So he is fine?"
"Yeah, new and kicking."
"That’s a relief," Olivia replied.
The system suddenly popped right in front of her face.
[Time remaining: 15 hours and 20 minutes.]
Olivia grimaced at the sight of the little devil. This was a difficult choice to make. The weight of the secret could destroy the reputation that Alexa has been building all these years. But if she refused to say it, she would lose everything that makes her human.
All this while, she had been taking the backlash of every decision she had made. This time she wanted the reward, not the backlash. Was she greedy? She believed she was. This was no place for that kind of heart. She wasn’t, to begin with.
She just needed to spread the message, and it would spread like wildfire. She had thought she wouldn’t do this—to be a snitch. But right now it was her survival that mattered. And if Alexa was going to come for her, then she would be waiting.
"Don’t you have class today?" Abigail asked, staring at her.
Olivia groaned. She didn’t want to go today, considering the fact they had messed up Verax’s laboratory. But if she doesn’t go, she will be made a prime suspect. And she might have missed her chance to spread the gossip.
Olivia stood up and freshened up. She borrowed Abigail’s clothes. She opened the door to step out. Her eyes widened in surprise when she saw Lucian standing in front of her, his hand inches away from knocking on the door.
"Lucian! What are you doing here?" Olivia asked, her fingers tightening around the edge of the door.
"To check up on you," he answered, his gaze swirling with gratefulness, respect, pain... and an unexplainable feeling.
"I’m fine. Thanks for checking on me... I’m glad that you are also fine," her eyes darted about but not his face. Did he remember me kissing him? she wondered.
"All thanks to you. Thank you for saving my life, Olivia."
"Don’t mention it. You saved me first, remember," she said with a light tone.
She stepped out of the door.
"Going somewhere?" he asked, following her steps.
