Chapter 58: Chapter 57 Monsters Don’t Stay Dead (4)
"We have to go now," Lucian pulled her back.
Olivia’s eyes darted back to Varex, who was barely standing. The vines had begun to crawl up his legs.
"Olivia!" Lucian called out.
Olivia snapped back to him. She followed after Lucian. ’I can’t believe I ruined everything.’ She felt a sting in her chest.
She cast a last glance at the teacher. She froze. Her eyes widened.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
No matter how hard Lucian tried to pull her out of the room, it was like her foot got glued to the ground.
’No. This is impossible,’ she murmured, her eyes swirling with emotion. She stared at her twin sister, who was almost covered by the vines.
’Should I let her die? I shouldn’t feel sympathy for her, right? She sent me to die. Don’t ever forget that... yes, die.’ Her thoughts crawled at the back of her mind.
’But why can’t I move? You can walk away from this, Olivia. Don’t prioritise the people that you are only an option to,’ she advised herself.
The vines crawled up Freya’s body, wrapping themselves around her neck up to her nose. Freya’s heart dropped in her chest. She was so scared that she forgot to breathe.
She regretted going back to collect the jar of organs that Olivia had harvested earlier. It was all the system’s fault. Her eyes dilated as her brain was cut off from oxygen supply.
(Earlier in the class)
Freya was paired with a male student. She was at the other end of the class. Her heart burned with jealousy as she stared at her sister working with Klaus. She didn’t know why Klaus was acting so close to her. She was nothing but trash, easily disposable and worthless.
Her hand tightened around her scalpel. The good things only belonged to her. Olivia was only meant to be her underdog.
[SYSTEM ALERT: You have two new missions.] A white screen appeared in front of her.
[Mission 1: Awaken the Wailroot monster.
Reward: 2-level upgrade.]
Freya’s blue eyes curiously stared at the screen. This was the first time her system was giving her a mission.
She bit her lower lip. She wasn’t sure what a Wailroot monster was—and she’d get a 2-level upgrade. ’That sounds like a good deal,’ she thought inwardly.
’I have to make a name for myself. I won’t fall behind her.’ Freya clenched her fist as she glared at Olivia, who was busy dissecting her monster corpse.
[Mission 2: Steal the organ that Olivia is harvesting. Further details will be given after the mission is fulfilled.
[Reward: 1 x core and an unlock of a passive ability.]
Freya felt a mixed feeling twirling in her stomach. For some reason, she felt an unsettling sensation, but she shovelled it away. She would show everyone that she was better than Olivia.
[Do you accept the missions?]
Freya nodded her head.
[You can awaken the Wailroot by crushing the core of the monster and adding a few drops of your blood into it.]
Freya nodded her head in agreement, ignoring the red blaring alarm in the back of her mind.
As they began dissecting the monster’s corpse, she saw its blue core. Her heart raced in anticipation. Her hand hesitatingly grasped it, then she summoned her power. Crackles of electricity formed around her hand. As she clenched her fist, the core shattered.
One of its shreds pierced through her palm, drawing blood from it.
(Back to present)
That was how she started the nightmare. Freya’s breath hitched. Her vision blurred with tears she didn’t even realize she had. ’ I just wanted to be better... but I started this,’ she thought. ’ I didn’t mean for it to go this far.’ She regretted it now that she had become the prey. Her eyes locked with Olivia’s.
A scowl formed on Olivia’s face. Freya wanted to wipe it off her face so badly.
"Olivia, let’s go before it’s too late," Lucian warned, his gaze glancing at the barrier that was a second from breaking down.
"Olivia!"
’Walk away, Olivia. Don’t waste mercy on someone who never offered it,’ she chanted inwardly. Her nails dug into her palm, but her leg refused to move.
She sighed, her tense body relaxing. Her eyes turned sharper and cold. She turned to Lucian, who had a puzzled look on his face.
"Can you redraw the rune again?" she asked, her voice cold and serious.
"Yes," he answered hesitantly. "Why are you asking?" His eyes flickered between her face and the disaster that was about to unfold.
"Because we are going to save them." She began to walk towards Varex.
’Come on, don’t you fail me,’ she muttered under her breath as she tried to conjure her flame.
Lucian stared at her, but for some reason, he didn’t look surprised by her decision. "Acting like a hero?" he couldn’t help but ask.
His hand moved swiftly and graciously as he began to draw the rune.
Olivia glanced over her shoulder at him. "I’m not a hero, and never will be," she answered.
"Then why are you acting like one? Looking for death?" he asked, his voice hoarse as he forcefully completed the rune.
A red round ring formed on the ground. "I can’t hold on for long. Anything you plan to do, do it fast," he yelled as he channeled his energy into the rune.
As the sound barrier was set up, Varex fell to his knees. His breath became ragged. Meanwhile, the vine loosened from Freya’s body as they could not sense anything.
Freya sighed, her panicked heart racing in her chest. She had hope now. Freya quickly ran towards where Olivia and Lucian were standing.
"Thank you," she whispered to Olivia.
Olivia snapped toward her. She swore she heard it wrong. But she didn’t utter a word; she pretended she didn’t hear it.
"We have to go now!" Lucian yelled.
Olivia held Varex, leading him towards the door. She stood waiting for Lucian. She backed Freya, who was standing right behind her.
"Hurry!" she called out to Lucian.
Lucian ran towards the door. As he ran, the glass red rune began to break under his feet.
As he was about to get to the door, his heart slammed against his chest. His eyes widened as he passed Olivia, who was heading towards the monsters in speed.
