Chapter 59: Chapter 58 Monsters Don’t Stay Dead (5)
His hand stretched towards her, but her fingers brushed against his, slipping away from his grasp.
A spasm of worry crossed through Olivia’s face, her wide, bewildered eyes locked on Freya’s triumphant ones.
(Earlier)
As Olivia was waiting for Lucian, Freya’s once meek expression turned into a devilish one. The vines followed after Lucian’s step; a thought suddenly popped in her head. Before the blink of an eye, she pushed Olivia towards the Wailroot monster.
Without wasting any more seconds, she dashed out of the door.
As Olivia sat on the horns of her dilemma, she felt a cold, wet, squishy sensation crawling up her skin. The translucent black veins wrapped around her, covering her from head to toe.
"Olivia!" Lucian yelled. Adrenaline burst through his veins, then he swiftly turned around, heading towards her.
Olivia was too overwhelmed with terror to move. Cold, spider-like fingers raced up and down her spine. She felt her body squeezing against the vines as they tightened their grip over her.
Her heart pounded violently. She couldn’t breathe. Couldn’t see. Everything was pitch black.
Oh, how foolish she was to take pity on her sister who didn’t hesitate to throw her into harm’s way. ’If only I can survive, I... I... will make her pay.’ She felt lightheaded.
A thousand hot needles pricked her skin, burning with venomous heat, making her nerves scream. She couldn’t even move her finger. Her chest felt as if the weight of a mountain was falling on it.
Regret churned in her gut like acid. All the moments she had wasted, all the pain she had endured—it couldn’t end like this. Not when she had finally started to fight for herself. Tears welled up, stinging even as the vines choked them back. She wasn’t ready. Not to die. Not without paying her back. ’I should’ve run. I should’ve left her.’ Her thoughts fractured, desperation rising like bile. Darkness loomed, but Olivia refused to surrender to it... not yet.
She wanted to scream, to beg for help, but her voice was trapped. Her throat raw with silence, her lungs begging for air.
All she could hear was a muffled voice calling her name. ’At least someone cared enough for me to call me this desperately.’ Her consciousness slowly slipped away.
Lucian froze. The vines were swallowing her whole, forming a suffocating heap. His heart stuttered... then rage surged.
He gritted his teeth. ’I didn’t want to use my power this soon... who cares, I can’t let her die.’ He thought inwardly as a ball of fire formed around his hand.
Without second thought, he dashed towards her, swiftly manoeuvring and dodging the vines that were coming after him.
He only needed to find the monster’s core, then he could end this nightmare.
The vines writhed, wailing as they came in contact with his flame. But they didn’t stop coming after him. New ones swung at him.
One of the vines wrapped itself around his leg, restricting his movement. Lucian’s eyes turned gold, blazing with inferno.
Flames erupted around him like a living beast, snarling at everything in its path. The vines recoiled screeching, then it melted into pools of hissing, translucent slime.
Lucian felt something squeezing his chest—feelings he never knew existed: worry and fear. The vines began to gather on top of Olivia’s body.
’Sht, they are trying to kill her fast, in order to become stronger.’* He thought to himself.
His eyes shut close. The moment they snapped open again, fire surged out like a dancing dragon, burning everything in its path.
The vines that were burying Olivia writhed and wailed, but more were forming on top of it. Lucian groaned in anger.
"Come on!" he yelled. Fire burst out from him like the inferno of a volcano.
...
Chattering filled the air as the students lingered around the classroom.
"So you mean a Wailroot monster actually awakened in the anatomy class? And some students died?" a boy asked in disbelief.
"Yes, I was there. I experienced the horror myself."
Verax stood outside waiting for Lucian and Olivia to come out, but their trace was nowhere to be found.
He clenched his fist. He wouldn’t be able to forgive himself if they ended up dead. He attempted to head back inside.
Freya suddenly blocked his path, tears rolling down her eyes. Her lips quivered. "They are dead... my... my sister is dead." She fell to her knees, wailing.
"What do you mean?" Varex’s face contorted with guilt and anger.
"They saved me. As we were about to escape from the room, the vines got Olivia. Lucian and I tried to help her... but... but it was too late." She clenched her chest, sobbing.
Verax’s sharp gaze stared at her. He was dumbfounded by the news. They were right behind him, so how did everything turn into a disaster? His lips grew thin and firm.
"So where is Lucian?" His voice grew thick and unsteady.
"He stayed behind. I don’t know why..." Freya fainted.
Verax hissed out of anger and frustration. "Someone take her to the infirmary for treatment," he ordered. Two students stepped forward, taking her away.
Freya stretched into a smile, her hand clutching at the jar bottle underneath her clothes. "The b**ch will die for sure this time."
As she was taken away, they passed Stefan Damonwalk, who was walking together with Klaus to the scene. His gaze briefly swept over the unconscious body before returning forward.
"Deception," he thought with amusement.
"I heard you carelessly let a Wailroot awaken in the school premises and that you have also lost some students." His sharp eyes pierced Verax, who averted his gaze.
"I know it was my mistake, but I had checked earlier. There was no sign of it. I’m so surprised that one awakened, Stefan..."
"It’s Stefan Damonwalk for you," Stefan coldly corrected.
Verax quickly nodded his head. "I apologize for that."
"Where is Olivia?" Klaus hesitantly asked. An ache in his belly told him something was wrong.
