Chapter 57: Chapter 56 Monsters Don’t Stay Dead (3)

The vine screeched before tightening around her, bolting up against her body with the speed of light. Its thorns pierced into her flesh, secreting venom into her bloodstream. The girl’s scream died in her throat, her eyes widened, drops of tears rolling down her face.

Blood drained from Olivia’s face—the horror, the blood-chilling scream, the speed of the slimy vines. Her stomach churned, her stomach contents pushing against her throat, trying to erupt from her mouth.

Her face turned red from the pressure. A single sound meant death. The veins had already crawled up to her chest, extending to her arms. Her eyes locked with those of Klaus, who was standing beside her. He looked like he was also struggling to remain calm.

Soon, the student was covered with the monster’s black, slimy veins.

"No matter what, you all must not move. I know this is terrifying, and you all are doing a great job. Remain calm," Verax encouraged. His eyes scanned the classroom, which was already covered with the monster’s vines. Some of the students were almost covered with them. Even if they managed to stay calm and quiet, they would soon die from suffocation.

Meanwhile, to Lucian, he was holding a ticking time bomb. His hand clasped around her mouth—she had almost screamed from the earlier incident. The air in the room thickened; the tension was so high that the students could hear their own heartbeats in their ears.

Lucian’s eyes flickered to Olivia. The vines were creeping too fast up her body. His throat tightened. They couldn’t just stay still waiting for death. The Wailwood monsters were scared of fire and high-pitched sounds...

His thoughts were disrupted by Verax’s words. "We have to work together. We can’t stay here any longer. Does anyone have sonic attributes? If you do, I want you to use it when you hear me count three to one. And we all know Olivia is famous for her fire attributes. Olivia, you have to use your fire to stop them as others escape," his words echoed in their ears.

"I will build a barrier so they cannot escape. If there is anyone who can draw a soundproof rune, this will be the perfect time to do so now." His voice came out more desperate than he intended.

"Those who are not supposed to fight, please escape in an orderly manner." The air grew thicker. "If you are wondering, ’How am I supposed to escape if this motherfking monster is clung to me?’ Worry not. They will let go when there is a high-pitched sound. So your fking job is to escape... safely."

Olivia’s heart pounded in her ear. How was she supposed to tell the teacher that she could not access her powers right now? ’This is a death trap,’ she panicked at the dilemma. Her eyes locked with her sister, Freya’s.

Her eyes widened slightly. Freya’s body was already covered up to her mouth. Just a tiny movement, and she would be as good as dead. Olivia darted her eyes away. She had no time to worry about her now. Everyone was expecting her to join in and save the day, but she was no hero.

[SYSTEM ALERT: You have 50 hours and 58 minutes left to complete your mission.]

Olivia stared blankly at the screen, completely speechless at the time it had chosen to pop up.

"Now release your sonic power!" Verax’s urgent voice thundered.

A student with short purple hair screamed. Waves of sound erupted from her lips, a shriek filling the air.

The vine monsters instantly withdrew back from their hosts, their wails flailing their vines in all directions.

"Now!!" Verax yelled. The students began to dash toward the entrance. "Olivia, now!" he cried out as he quickly set a barrier around the vines.

Olivia stood stupefied—she had no idea what to do. She tried to conjure her flames, but nothing came.

The vines began to lash at the barrier violently. "Olivia!" Verax yelled desperately.

"Sh*t," Verax cursed under his breath. "Klaus, inform Stefan Danmonwalk that he is needed here."

Klaus was perplexed. He wanted to stay with Olivia, but he couldn’t refuse the order. With gritted teeth, he dashed toward the door.

Lucian quickly drew a soundproof rune, rendering the monster unable to detect any sound or motion. The monster’s vines slithered with a hissing sound.

The girl with the purple hair followed the other students out of the classroom.

"I can’t hold on anymore! All of you, get out!" Verax yelled as he shot daggers at Olivia. He had heard rumors about her powers—who knew she was nothing but a useless rag?

"What... about you?" Olivia asked, stuttering. Deep down, she felt guilt for not being able to help. Maybe it wouldn’t have ended this way if he knew she couldn’t use her power.

"All thanks to you." He buckled underneath his knees.

Crack.

The barrier cracked open. One of the monster’s vines shot out, aiming for Olivia, who seemed lost in her thoughts.

Olivia suddenly crashed into an arm. She looked up. "Lucian." She was stunned by the sudden position. She quickly stepped away from him.

"AAARGHhh!"

A scream echoed through the air. The vine wrapped around a boy who was about to make his way out of the room. The vines swiftly wrapped around him like a cocoon, sucking the life essence from his body.

"Noooo!!!" A blood-chilling scream echoed from outside the classroom, as a girl tried to desperately head toward the victim of the vine monster.

Olivia’s breath hitched, her hand clenched. She turned to Lucian, her eyes widened. The rune spell had broken... because he wanted to save her.

"What have you done?" she whispered, her eyes glistened with tears. Worry and fear etched on her face. She felt guilty for being incompetent enough to save herself and causing another’s death. But beneath the shame, she felt a little tinge of relief and warmth that someone went out of his way to save her... even at a cost.

Now, the sound barrier was broken, because of her. The vines lashed out—this time more powerful, volatile, and deadly.
