Chapter 135: Chapter 134 Last Man Standing (1)
Normally, he wasn’t supposed to let a student into the pit to fight unless they had committed a serious crime. But he had always wanted her dead. If she could die in the pit, it would be a dream come true for him. But the boss had clearly ordered that she must not die. He bit his lips at the golden opportunity.
"I’m afraid I can’t let you go into the pit, Olivia. Only elite students from the second ranking are allowed access to the pit."
Olivia panicked at the rejection. "No one will know. It will be just between you and me," she hastily said. "I can wear a mask so nobody will be able to tell that it’s me."
Her heart thundered in her ears. If she was rejected again, she had no idea what to do next. She could only pray that he would accept her.
Michael tilted his head slightly to the side, his burning gaze boring into her. Mischief flickered through his eyes.
Olivia saw that evil glint. She knew that he was going to make it hard for her to survive the fight. But she was willing to take any chances she could get, even if her survival chances were only 10 percent.
Silence fell over the room as the tension thickened.
"Fine, we’ll do it your way," his voice broke the silence.
Olivia let out a breath she didn’t know she had been holding all this while.
"There is a match tonight. Come find me at 12 midnight. You know your way to the arena, right?" he said, his chair screeching against the floor as he stood.
He walked closer to her, hesitantly placing a hand on her shoulder. He gave her a good squeeze, but no reaction was on Olivia’s face.
"Nobody must know about this, or I’ll find you and feed you to the monsters." His voice came out calm and demeaning.
"Yes, sir," she replied, meeting his gaze.
"Good. You can go now."
Olivia turned, walking to the door. Her hand reached for the knob, opening the door, but as she was about to go out, she stopped momentarily. "Thank you," she muttered, and without waiting for his response, she snapped the door shut.
As Olivia walked through the corridor, her mind seemed to be clouded with the fear of the unknown. ’Power does come with a price,’ she thought inwardly.
Right now, she had to pray to whatever god existed to let her survive tonight’s fight. Her instincts told her it was going to be more difficult than the last time.
She had already made up her mind, and there was no going back.
......
Midnight came quicker than she expected. She stood at the entrance of the arena, her legs begging her to go back, but she refused. Instead, her hand tightened over her sword, as if it was the only lifeline she could hold onto.
Olivia inhaled deeply before venturing into the den of death. Her black leather pants and jacket clung to her body, complimenting her curves. Her face was hidden under a silver mask, only her fierce green eyes exposed.
Each pulse of her heartbeat was a reminder that she had already chosen this path. She inhaled deeply, her breath sharp against the cold air. The metallic scent of old blood clung to the walls like a ghost, whispering of past lives lost in the pit.
Her black boots clicked on the ground like a war drum, her frame exuding confidence and bravery.
’If I’m able to pay the price for power, then and only then am I worthy to be called powerful. Because power isn’t for the coward... And I, Olivia Donovan, refuse to be a coward.’
She entered the large arena, and she saw a much larger crowd compared to before. She knew it—tonight’s battle would be for an ultimate prize... or her life.
She strode to the area where contestants were supposed to wait. Her eyes scanned the other students who would also be fighting. She felt small in their presence, as their bodies were more well-built and bigger than hers.
Most of the men were not wearing any shirts. Their upper bodies glistened under the dim light, scars big and small decorating their skin.
The dried metallic smell of blood hit her nostrils, along with the scent of sweat and cologne. When she raised her head to look at the crowds, her gaze met Michael’s, who had a smirk on his lips.
She scowled at him, but he couldn’t see it because of her mask.
"The next battle will be a battle for blood, dignity, and power," came the voice of the announcer.
Olivia’s brows furrowed. What did they mean by that?
"This round will be a battle among eight contestants and a level SS monster. The last man standing wins the battle. Contestants, please make your way into the arena," came the cold voice again.
Olivia’s breath hitched. An SS-level monster, and seven other powerful opponents. Now she doubted if she had a chance to survive this battle. Nevertheless, she made her way into the pit, her sword pulsing with an emerald glow in her hand.
The contestants scattered themselves in the arena, each one of them cautious of the other. They weren’t just fighting a monster—they were also fighting amongst themselves.
Olivia stood, scanning every single one of her opponents. If she fought head-on with these opponents, she was as good as dead. She had to come up with a plan.
"Release the Monster."
The sound of the heavy gate opening and chains clanking echoed through the air. Then, silence followed. The tension was so thick that if a pin had dropped to the ground, it would clearly echo through the air.
Olivia’s fist tightened around her sword as she slowly unsheathed it. Everyone’s eyes fixated on the rusted gate that had already opened.
’Why isn’t it coming out?’ Olivia thought inwardly.
The tension rose higher as the silence made everyone nervous. Suddenly, the air turned cold, as if they were teleported to the North Pole.
Then, just when they least expected it, something blurred into the arena.
