Chapter 116: Chapter 115 Burdens We All Bear
’Was she talking about the same fight that Dimitri has told me about?’ Lucian stared at Olivia for a moment too long.
"Get out of my way, I have to finish this... I have a feeling she would be a pain in the ass if I let her live," he muttered the last part under his lips.
Olivia glanced at Diana who was sitting on the ground behind her. "Lucian," her voice lowered. "I know I shouldn’t have talked to you in that manner... but can you please understand that this is a hard time for me?"
"Diana is my friend, and you know that too," she added with gritted teeth. Her eyes flickered to the far distance, the graveyard. All she wanted was to see her best friend again, but why was this happening?
"I can see you planned this with her," Lucian said, his gaze deadlier than the sharpest dagger.
For a second, even he was confused by his own attitude. He should have already killed both of them, but why was he holding back?
Olivia closed her eyes in frustration. The trouble was getting too much. Why was it always difficult for her to get something she really needed?
"Your friend tried to plunge a knife through my heart," his gaze darkened. He moved, walking closer to her. His voice held a malicious and amused tone. His frame towered over hers, making Olivia crane her head up towards him.
Strangely, every step he took felt like a ticking time bomb to her, and surprisingly, it made her knees shake a little. She had never felt this way in his presence before... except during the essence transfer and when he fought with Klaus.
On a second note, he does look different. His gaze had become sharper, and icy cold, despite they burned like flames. His presence was so overwhelming that she felt like kneeling and bowing before him. Although his skin looked pale and a few bruises could be seen on his skin, that doesn’t make him look less than an ancient god... she would have sworn he was a god of war.
Swallowing, Olivia forced herself to respond to him. "I apologise on her behalf, can you please spare her?" Her voice came out in a whisper.
Their eyes met. For some weird reason, Olivia quickly averted her gaze. It looked like she was being scrutinised by someone else. His eyes held no emotion or care that Lucian’s held.
Lucian stared at her before a devilish smirk crept on his lips. He felt drawn to her, like she possessed a part of him.
He wanted to see if this was his own imagination, so he reached out to her forehead. If she was really who he suspected her to be, a mark would be revealed on her.
However, before he could even raise his hand, Olivia did something she hadn’t planned.
Her palm slammed across his face.
A sharp crack echoed through the air.
Then, silence followed. It was so thick that a blade could slice through it.
Lucian stood frozen. His head remained turned for a moment, his expression unreadable. His brain was busy processing what had just happened like a broken tape.
When he finally recovered from it, he looked back at her. Something deadly and chilling glimmered in his eyes.
His jaw tightened.
Olivia’s chest rose and fell. Her hand stung, trembling beside her. Her entire body screamed at her to run, but she didn’t move. And funny enough, she had no idea why she had done that. It was more of an instinct. Even her heart wanted to escape from its cage.
Lucian’s lips parted slightly, but no words came out. He just stared at her.
"Don’t... Don’t look at me like that," Olivia said, her voice shaking. "It wasn’t intentional... it just happened." Her widened eyes stared down at her own hand, as if they were responsible for the slap.
Lucian’s breath hitched. His golden eyes blazed like an inferno. He was ready to burn her alive, but as he took a step forward... he suddenly halted... then, without a word, he turned around and vanished into the shadows.
Olivia collapsed to her knees, her breath catching in her throat. The pounding of her heartbeat echoed in her ears. Even her hands felt clammy, cold sweat forming all over her.
Diana sobbed quietly behind her. "He was going to kill me."
"I know," Olivia whispered. "But something... stopped him," she said, her voice void of emotion. For a moment, she had forgotten that Diana was still there.
What a nice way to visit a friend.
Olivia’s gaze lingered in the direction he had disappeared into. What was wrong with him? What was wrong with her? On second thought... her eyes immediately snapped at Diana.
"You really tried to kill him!" Her words came out harsher than she intended.
Diana weakly cast her gaze at her. "Yes."
Olivia went quiet. Swallowing, she painfully stood. She walked towards the direction of the graveyard.
Diana was taken aback by her sudden detachment. "I needed to do it, to prevent the misfortunes of the world from happening... It’s not like I wanted to... I had to," she said, louder this time, but Olivia didn’t stop, neither did she say a word.
"Olivia, this is difficult for me too... to shoulder the weight of the world... to be against your friend... to smear hands with a close one’s blood... none of this is easy for me." She burst out in tears.
Her words made Olivia’s step falter, but she didn’t stop. "I guess we all have a burden to bear."
Tears slowly trickled down Diana’s face. She had never felt this guilt before, but most importantly, she couldn’t fail her ancestors. She can’t afford to.
"It seems like we are bound to be enemies in this lifetime." A sad smile crept up her face. Now that she was unable to kill Lucian, her target now shifted to Olivia.
As long as one of them dies, the world will be out of danger.
