Chapter 107: Chapter 106 This is What Friends Do

...

Lucian breathed heavily as he shifted his weight on his sword. Bodies scattered around the ground, and he was standing at the center of it.

His eyes blurred, but he shook his head to regain consciousness.

Cuts and wounds covered his face, his body bleeding from both deep and shallow wounds.

"Give up, you can’t win against us," Gauss said. A satisfied smirk tugged on his lips.

"How were you able to bring this many transformed monsters here?" Lucian’s voice was barely a whisper.

It was weird. Monsters only transformed into humans if they had attained the SSS level. And after they transform, they lose all their powers, restarting from level one.

But these monsters were different. And it was difficult for monsters to reach SSS level. So why were there so many of them? And why were they powerful?

Before Lucian could hear his answer, his heart suddenly hurt for no reason. The pain was so bitter and agonizing.

Without his control, tears flowed down from his face. When he felt how wet his face was, he wondered why he was feeling this way.

This wasn’t his emotion. What was happening? He could feel it inside him—something was about to change, but what?

Before he could dwell on it, a blood-chilling and agonized scream echoed through the forest. Followed by a shockwave of heat. It was so hot that most of the trees and leaves shrank immediately.

What shattered him was the scream, it was the one only a heartbreak could cause.

"Olivia," his heart dropped into his stomach. He gathered his remaining strength before he blurred through the forest, heading towards her.

"Please be safe," he chanted like a prayer.

.......

Olivia’s eyes opened wide in horror. The sword pulled out from his chest, and slowly, he dropped to the ground. Olivia’s heart stopped for more than a moment before it pounded hard against her chest.

Tears poured down her eyes, her hands trembled—confusion, fear, pain crashed through her body.

She couldn’t believe what her eyes were seeing. "Luke," she whispered, before scrambling over to his body. She ignored the pain that shot through her body.

Her hands shakily pressed on his chest, which was gushing with blood. "Luke... Luke... stay with me... please," she muttered, as tears poured down her face without restraint.

Luke’s hand, which was covered with blood, covered hers. "Olivia..." he said, blood splattered from his mouth.

"I’m here... I’m here," Olivia applied more pressure on his wounds. Her shoulders trembled. "I’ll get you to safety, okay... stay with me." She tried to smile at him, but her lips quivered into a cry.

Luke smiled, his white teeth turned red. "I don’t... die easily." He chuckled, more blood splattering from his mouth.

He had no regret for taking the blade for her. If he was given another chance, he would still choose to take the blade for her.

His trembling hand shakily pushed some strands of hair away from her face.

She raised him, trying to drag him toward safety. They were just only a few feet away.

As Olivia was busy trying to get him out, Luke’s eyes saw the monster flashing his sword at Olivia again. A sad smile formed on his face.

He swiftly changed position with her, his body covering hers in an embrace.

Slash.

The sword pierced through Luke’s back and came out of his chest, also piercing Olivia’s chest as they were embracing.

Olivia weakly glanced at the sword that pierced through them. The world stilled, her eyes slowly flickering back to Luke.

Luke gave her a knowing smile. "This is what best friends do for each other," his hand cupped her face.

"Live... well," tears trickled down his cheeks. Olivia stared blankly with a wet face. She felt numb. She didn’t know if she should cry, scream, or wail.

She just couldn’t believe her eyes. She didn’t believe that she’d led the only true friend she had left... to his death.

The monster pulled his sword out, and they both fell to their knees. Olivia held his face, "I said I will bring you to safety... okay? No more taking blades for me." She said, completely unfocused, her hand trying to stop his bleeding.

Luke stopped her, making her focus on him. "I don’t regret it... I’m happy to do it... if they should have another life... I hope we can continue our friendship..." his words trailed off, his body went limp, his head falling on Olivia’s shoulder.

He was happy to die in the arms of his loved one. This was enough for him.

Olivia froze, afraid to breathe. Tears streamed down her face uncontrollably. "Luke," she whispered. She nudged him. "Say something... you are scaring me... please."

She got no response from him. At that moment, her world shattered. The only ray of light she had in her life. The only assurance that she wasn’t a bad luck. Why do the people that were close to her end up dying? First it was Anna, now Luke? Was she undeserving of love? Why do people she cares about die?

Pain gushed through her body down to her soul like a broken dam. A blood-chilling scream echoed through the forest.

Her arms clenched around his body. Her body shook from the emotion coursing through her veins. She felt hollow. Her heart felt like it was being ripped apart. This was her greatest fear and her greatest pain.

NOOOOOOO!!!

Her eyes flickered with red. The heat rose like a tsunami. Waves of flame spread through the forest. Before the blink of an eye, she was standing in front of the attacker. The monster swung at her, but his weapon was repelled by an invisible force.

Her hand grabbed his neck, slamming him into the trees, and then she slammed him into the ground. Black blood splattered from his mouth.

Olivia’s head tilted slightly, her eyes emotionless. She applied pressure on his neck, evaporating him inside. Nothing remained from his body except his ashes.
