Chapter 106: Chapter 105 Between Death and Loyalty
Lucian’s eyes darkened. "Someone wanted him dead? Who sent you?" His voice was low, carrying a deadly intent.
"I’m afraid I can’t say so," he answered, mischief swirling in his eyes. He turned to the attackers, "What are you doing? Break the barrier!" he ordered.
Their attacks became more fierce.
Olivia tugged at Lucian, who was trying to hold the barrier. "What?" Lucian growled at her.
"We need a plan to get out of here," she whispered, her eyes flickering to Luke, whose weight was resting on his sword, which was stabbing the ground.
"Well, we don’t have time to make one. I’ll hold them off, you and your friend will escape," he said through gritted teeth.
"What about you?"
"Don’t worry about me, I’ll be right behind you," he muttered, before releasing a dragon. The dragon flew around the barrier, reinforcing its strength.
Olivia stood still, staring at his back. She had mixed feelings about him. He didn’t look as evil as Diana had painted him.
And she was supposed to kill him. How? How could she harm someone who hasn’t done anything against her? She bit her lips.
"I’ll create a diversion. That’s when you’ll run."
Fire began to wrap around Lucian’s body. As he took a step forward, fire spread from his feet to the ground like a shockwave.
He built a wall of fire, separating the attackers from them. The attackers scrambled back, away from the blazing fire. "Now... Run." He yelled as the barrier behind them ripped open.
Olivia hesitated for a moment. She couldn’t bear to leave him alone. But seeing Luke’s state, she knew she had to bring him to safety.
’This could be the last time I see him,’ the thought crashed into her mind, but she refused to believe that. She would come back for him. She hoped he would be able to survive until then.
"Be safe," she muttered before leaving with Luke, whose body was dripping with cold sweat.
After they had gone far, Lucian brought down the wall. Blood dripped down from the side of his lips. He casually wiped it off.
When he glanced back, he couldn’t see any trace of them. The fog was a perfect cover. For some weird reason, his heart hurt. He had thought that she would stay with him, fight beside him. But she chose her friend over him. She chose her friend. Not him.
Why did that hurt him so much?
Gauss’s eyes wandered behind Lucian, but he could not find any trace of them. "Sh*t," he cussed, his eyes blazing with fury.
He couldn’t believe that he was just fooled by them. "Go search for the girl... I want her here, dead or alive," he ordered.
Some of the attackers prepared to go hunt for them. But as they approached, Lucian stood in front of them. "Going somewhere?" he asked with amusement.
Although Lucian knew that his powers were getting exhausted, he couldn’t let it show—not to the attackers and definitely not to Olivia. These assassins were higher than SS monsters, so he had used almost all his power to suppress them so far.
He drew his rune. The dragon came out again, but this time it slithered around him before it let out a shrieking sound. The shockwave sent debris flying, blowing the assassins a few inches away.
The attackers growled before attacking in a coordinated form. The dragon growled before it began to attack them in mighty and fierce fury.
Lucian stood behind it, conjuring a sword of flames. Blood trickled down his palm, dropping on the ground. He had used the runes numerous times—one more time and he’d be drained of his energy.
But deep down, he knew he could not stop now. He had to make sure they got to safety. His nose flared as he began to fight against the monsters. The dragon was attacking while he was defending against them.
...
Olivia and Luke ran through the fog, heading toward safety. Olivia glanced furtively over her shoulder.
Luke held his injured stomach with one hand as he tried not to slow her down. The wind ruffled their hair, as the smell of fresh, damp air mixed with something he could not explain invaded their nostrils.
He felt bad leaving the other boy to hold back those many assassins. His eyes darted to Olivia, and he could sense how uneasy she was. She wanted to go back and fight with him, but because of him, she could not go back.
His fingers tightened around his sword. Every movement he made sent overwhelming pain up his spine. But he didn’t make a sound—he would not get her more worried.
Their steps abruptly came to a halt. "Did you hear that?" Olivia whispered as she scanned their environment.
Luke listened, trying to pick up anything unusual. Right then, the bushes rustled. There was someone following after them.
Olivia pulled his hand, and they dashed through the forest. They had no time to confirm whatever that was. They only needed to get outside the forbidden forest. Only then would they be safe.
They made it to the entrance of the forest. Just a few more steps and they’d be free from this hellish place. Hope surged within her. After she got Luke to safety, then she would come with help and save Lucian.
But as they neared it, a figure suddenly appeared in front of them. His eyes glowed red, claws elongated out of his fingers. A horn grew out of his forehead.
A spasm of worry crossed their faces. Olivia held her sword tightly. The sword blazed with fire, her stance widened. She breathed heavily, "Luke, run as I keep him occupied," she whispered to him.
Before Luke could refute her, she had already begun to attack him. Luke sighed before running out of the forest.
Olivia smiled when she saw he was out. But this monster she was fighting against was stronger than the ones she had fought against before.
His claws transformed into a black sword. And then, his attacks came fast and brutal. Olivia’s body lagged behind, a beat too slow. Pain shot through her as his sword cut through her arm, and then her back.
She staggered back. Before she could stabilize herself, she saw everything moving fast around her, her stomach churning as she crashed into a tree.
When she raised her head up, blood trickled down her face. She saw him blurring toward her, aiming his sword for the final strike.
A sad smile curved on her lips. So this was how she finally died. And then silence. It was like time had stilled, and then...
Slash.
Someone stood in front of her. She gasped when she saw a black sword protruding out of his chest, blood dripping from its tip.
