Chapter 108: Chapter 107 Burning Grief
Olivia’s eyes turned to Luke’s lifeless body. Her emotionless eyes softened. She slowly walked towards him.
Her steps burned everything she stepped on. She knelt beside him, her hands reached out to him, but she stopped midway, returning them to her side.
She was afraid she might burn him. She wanted to believe this was all a lie, a nightmare. But no matter how many times she closed and opened her eyes, she could not wake from it.
The wound on his chest, the blood staining his face was a cruel reminder that it was all real. Right then, she swore to avenge him. She swore to eliminate every monster.
She stared mindlessly at him, while letting her fire take on the rage she was feeling. Her flames roared around them like a barrier, enlarging every passing minute. It burned the trees, incinerating them to nothing but ashes.
The fire roared, spreading out, destroying every life it came across. Meanwhile, in the barrier, it was so calm as if time had stopped for a moment, like she was in a world of her own.
All the conversations she had with Luke, including the first time they met. His gruff voice, his braveness and that gentle side to his rough exterior, his smiles and... his last words, all replayed in her head like a broken tape.
Meanwhile, Lucian, who had been looking for her, finally found her. He halted on the spot as if he was stuck by glue.
From the blazing fire, he could see her kneeling down, staring at a body. He didn’t need to get closer to know who the person was.
He felt bad for both of them.
But why did he feel this pain—these emotions—that weren’t his?
His jaw tightened as he looked at the disaster caused by the fire. If she doesn’t get this under control, she is going to burn the entire forest. And then... people will start looking for her.
He slightly glanced over his shoulder when he heard the sliding of feet against the ground, pushing the dirt a few inches away.
He sighed when he saw that it was the monsters that were following after him. But his eyes became calculative. If he fought them head-on, he was as good as dead.
Without a second thought, he ran into Olivia’s barrier, which was roaring like a wild beast. Lucian expected to feel pain, but to his uttermost surprise, the flames didn’t hurt him. Rather, they were warm against his skin.
The monsters got bold seeing that Lucian was able to enter the barrier unharmed, and the fire didn’t do anything to him.
They ran into the barrier. For a second, nothing happened. Lucian grew alarmed. He stood a few feet from Olivia. He needed to stop them—he couldn’t let any harm come near her.
As he weakly held his sword, the monsters, who had smiled at the harmless barrier, began to scrunch their faces in pain. Soon, an agonizing cry escaped from their lips before they turned into ash.
The monsters who had newly entered the barrier tried to turn back. But no matter what they did, they couldn’t go out. And just like their mates, they incinerated into ashes.
Gauss and a monster stood outside the barrier. "We have to leave now... we need to recuperate," Gauss whispered. His eyes held fear and, at the same time, anger. He couldn’t believe that after all he had planned and done, he still couldn’t kill those two b**tards that had sent his pet to hell.
He closed his eyes, trying to contain his anger. He would come back another day, and when he did, he would personally make sure they didn’t see the light of the next day.
They both vanished into the forest.
Lucian sighed when he saw that they were gone. The fight was over. His eyes flickered to Olivia, whose face was so calm and blank, like a piece of white paper. She knelt as if she was frozen in time—not even a single blink.
If he doesn’t stop her now, the authorities and everyone will be on her trail. He has to get closer to her before she burns everything. He needs to wake her up.
Lucian pushed closer to her. The closer he was, the more the intensity of the flame increased. Finally, he got to her.
He stood still as his eyes wandered around Luke’s corpse. He swallowed. When he told them to escape earlier, he never knew it would come to this. A lump formed in his throat.
The emotion he felt earlier—was it hers? He didn’t know what to say. He didn’t know how to comfort her or make her stop.
"Olivia," his words came out low and cracked. His voice held sadness—not because he felt what she was feeling, but because a little part of his heart truly mourned over Luke’s death. He was a good friend.
"Olivia," his words came out louder and stronger now.
As if his words had broken Olivia’s trance, her head snapped over to him. Lucian’s heart squeezed tightly in his chest. Even though her eyes were emotionless and empty, he could still see the pain burning through her soul like burning coal.
"I know you are in agony, and you are mourning his death... but you have to stop now. The fight is over."
Olivia didn’t say anything. She just stared soullessly at him. It was like she had retreated to the deeper depths of her mind.
He tried to take a step closer. But the empty look in Olivia’s eyes turned into one of fury. Her eyes blazed—and so did the fire, swirling around them, expanding more.
The fire pushed Lucian back. His body could not resist its force. He spat blood, his ears rang in his head, his eyes blurring.
His arms crossed above his chest as he tried to resist the force. "Stop now, Olivia... do you want to take innocent lives? The monsters are gone... they are dead." He yelled out desperately.
