Chapter 102: Chapter 101 A Heart at War
Olivia’s legs went numb; she fell to the ground. ’Was this really happening?’
A sad and heart-wrenching laugh resonated from her throat. The only person she had started opening up to was going to send her to her death.
The memories of when she was transferring essence flickered through her head. The way he was draining her essence out of her, the look in his eyes was so unfamiliar and terrifying. The words he had said.
"Mine." The word resonated in her head. So he didn’t mean that in a romantic way? How foolish of her to think so—he was much more interested in her essence.
The mark that had burned through her forehead was also because of him.
She also remembered how he had defeated Klaus easily, breaking his rules. The power that surged around him was unfathomable. He wasn’t what he seemed to be.
But still yet, her heart—her traitor of a heart—wanted to believe this was all a coincidence. It made her think of the three times he had saved her. Would he have done that if he wasn’t kind?
She shook her head, steeling herself not to let a tear threaten her eyes to fall. "I think you are wrong, Diana. He is not like that... he has saved me numerous times."
Diana walked towards her, bending half-knees in front of her. Her eyes held concern. Her hand rested on Olivia’s shoulder. "I understand your denial, but he could be saving you so he can take your essence when the time’s right," she paused for her words to sink into her. "He is waiting for the right time," she added.
It was like the last string she was holding onto was brutally cut off. The tears finally burst out from their cage.
Her body trembled in denial, her heart bleeding from pain.
"Olivia, I didn’t want to say this, but he is the harbinger of doom," Diana’s voice turned stern. She rose up to her feet.
"You wanted to know the truth, Olivia. You should be willing to shoulder the burden," she added.
Olivia was unresponsive to her words. Her world had just crashed down before her eyes. ’I should kill Lucian?’ she thought inwardly.
Her empty eyes gazed at Diana, who was now sitting on her bed, her hazel eyes staring right back at her.
"What will your decision be?"
Olivia shook her head. "I... I don’t know... I’ll think about it," she answered, slowly getting on her feet.
She didn’t wait for Diana’s reply before walking out of the room. She felt emptiness inside her, as if a huge hollow had formed within her chest.
She unknowingly walked past Luke, who had been waiting for her.
Luke was taken aback by the zombie-like state. He wanted to stop her, talk to her, make her feel better. But he couldn’t bring himself to do that. Rather, he slowly walked two steps behind her.
Olivia walked without direction; she headed towards wherever her foot led her. She clutched her sword tight to her chest, as if to find solace in it.
But why did it have to be him? Her heart felt a burn that sent fire down to her skull. At that moment, she tried to stop herself from breaking down.
But how could she take his life? She suddenly saw Lucian smiling right back at her. Her fragile heart skittered in her chest. She stood frozen, memorising the illusion of his smile, like it was the last good thing she’d ever get to keep.
She shook her head. This wasn’t real. Streaks of tears rolled down her cheeks. She shouldn’t feel this much pain, but why did it hurt so much?
She felt like she had been denied a chance before she even tried. Right then, she wished she had said yes to him when he asked for a kiss. Maybe then, she wouldn’t feel like she’d lost something she never even had a chance to hold.
Her brain was telling her to start devising a plan on how to kill him, but her heart refused the thoughts. Her knees buckled beneath her.
She fell on the moist ground, the trees scattered around her. The wind blowing felt like a wave of fire brushing her skin. She wanted to scream from the agony. She wanted to ask the universe why she had to go through this, why she never ever once got a good thing in her life. And now the only flicker of hope she had was already being taken away from her.
Her shoulders trembled as the dam of tears burst out, her nose turned red, snot dripping from it.
Luke’s heart ached for her. He didn’t know what had broken her, but every cell in his body told him to comfort her.
He was a little hesitant, but when he saw the way her shoulders trembled like a dry leaf before the wind, his legs moved before his brain could process what he was doing.
He knelt in front of Olivia, pulling her into a hug. His heart clenched in his chest. His hand gently patted her back. He wanted to destroy whatever had made her hurt this much.
Olivia’s body froze as her face crashed into Luke’s chest. The warmth that coursed through her body—the feeling that she wasn’t alone—made her pour her heart out. Her hands clenched at his clothes. She felt saved and comforted in his embrace. He was the second person to make her feel like this.
After minutes went by, she sniffled, hiccupping once in a while. When Luke noticed that she had become calm, he wanted to pull out of the embrace.
But Olivia clung to him. "Please, stay like this for a couple of minutes," she whispered, her voice hoarse and a little nervous.
Luke pulled her closer into the hug. They stayed like that for minutes, without uttering another word. But the silence wasn’t suffocating—it was comforting.
Even as Luke held her, her heart whispered one name in silence... and it wasn’t his.
