Chapter 231: Almost shot
But before Elena could think further, she sensed a bullet speeding toward her—so close that if she had taken even a single step forward, it might have struck her belly.
She shuddered at the thought and instinctively placed a hand over her stomach, gently soothing her baby and calming herself in the process.
Thankfully, her instincts had kicked in just in time. She used [Blink] to escape, teleporting to a secluded crater.
There, she quickly summoned Ethan to her side so they could regroup and plan their next move.
"Someone’s sniping at us," she muttered, frustration clear in her voice.
She had nearly pulled Dr. Cee into the space, but the unexpected shot had ruined everything.
Those snipers must have been the presence she’d sensed earlier, watching them from afar.
At first, Ethan was confused about why she had force-summoned him.
But when he heard someone had taken a shot at her, worry immediately filled his eyes.
"Are you okay?" he asked quickly.
"I escaped before it could hit me," she replied calmly.
Ethan let out a quiet sigh of relief.
"It seems the government planted hidden guards to protect that scientist," he muttered, narrowing his eyes as he tried to locate the sniper’s position.
"I think so too," Elena replied.
"But we can’t retreat now. We must eliminate that mad scientist and Troy. If we let them go, we may never get another chance."
Ethan raised his brows; he noticed how she mentioned the scientist’s real name with clear disdain way back.
Curious, he asked, "Who is that Dr. Cee?"
Elena then shared her dream—one filled with images of a mad scientist who carried out cruel, inhumane experiments on ability users.
If left unchecked, Dr. Cee would only bring chaos, not just to them but to all of humanity.
She wasn’t sure how many people he had experimented on in her past life, but judging from his notorious reputation, the number must have been countless.
She sighed deeply.
She wasn’t trying to play the hero, but if humanity was to have any future, someone like him had to be stopped—permanently.
"I see. Can you tell me the trajectory of the bullet? I might be able to locate them from that," Ethan said calmly, standing beside her with unwavering support.
That mad scientist had clearly lost his mind after witnessing their abilities.
If they didn’t eliminate him now, he would only come back with more twisted plans—and even greater danger.
Ethan didn’t want his wife constantly burdened by thoughts of their enemies. Her main focus should be her pregnancy, far away from stress.
His thoughts were interrupted when he heard his wife speak gently.
"I think it came from the east side," she answered with a slight shiver, recalling how terrifyingly close the bullet had come to hit her belly.
Ethan nodded and raised his binoculars, scanning the east side, while Elena kept her eyes on Dr. Cee and Troy, who were trying to regroup with their remaining men.
It looked like the damage they had dealt earlier had nearly wiped them out—but these so-called ’favored ones’ were not easy to kill.
For Dr. Cee, retreat wasn’t an option.
The mutated pests were swarming the area, making it too dangerous for them to leave their position.
So, the battle paused for a moment—each side tense, watching, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
While Elena and Ethan searched for the hidden sniper, Oslo and Xander were facing their own problems at the branch and main shops.
The mutated pests had started showing up near the buildings.
It was only a matter of time before the creatures broke in, which would cause chaos.
Acting fast, they ordered everyone to shut the shops and prepare for the worst. Thankfully, each building had military officers stationed inside.
So, the residents were well-organized and ready, but fear still lingered.
Most of them were terrified of these pests. The last time they appeared, the pests nearly crippled them—devouring their rations and spreading disease.
Now that the pests had returned, everyone sighed. It felt like the world would never let them live in peace.
"The shop will close for now, but once this is over, we’ll reopen," Oslo announced, just as he and Ethan had planned with Elena if the mutated pests situation got worse.
The customers weren’t happy about it, but since this was the only shop that still sold to them, they quickly nodded in agreement.
They knew that if the shop were overwhelmed and its staff injured, it might shut down permanently.
"Shop staff, we understand. Please go ahead. We’ll stay here and help defend against the mutated pests," the customers said in unison, already preparing to assist the military.
"Since these pests are so persistent, please take this pesticide—free from the Paradise Shop. Help yourselves and we wish you all good luck," Oslo replied, encouraging them.
He wasn’t sure if the pesticide would still work against mutated pests—but something was better than nothing, right?
After closing the door, they stored everything in their [Inventory] and entered the space, then exited at Grandpa Caldwell’s location to discuss their next move.
"Since Elena and Ethan are busy right now, let’s not trouble them further. Just keep them informed so they’ll be aware," Grandpa Caldwell said.
"Alright, let’s plan how to secure our unit first. Make sure to check for any open spots where the pests might get in. Better safe than sorry."
After a brief pause, he continued, "Are the pesticides still working?"
"I’m not sure," Oslo replied. "I haven’t used them on the mutated pests yet. Maybe we can let the others try them out first. We can call Ramon and Lydia—they’re both on the battlefield right now."
"Alright, go ahead and contact them."
When Lydia heard a [DING] sound in her mind, she quickly paused her gunfire at the mutated pests and allowed the [Telepathy] to come through.
"Lydia? Hey, how are you? And how’s the battlefield situation?" Oslo said gently.
"It’s still under control on the western side, mostly thanks to General Reid’s leadership. But there are just too many mutated pests," she replied.
"As for Ramon on the northern side, I’ll reach out to him later. Last I heard, General Kaiser was leading that front. That’s all for now. How’s the building? Still no pests showing up?"
"I’m glad you’re safe. Sadly, the pests are starting to show up, and it’s only a matter of time before they try to enter the building," he said, his voice a mix of relief and worry.
These weren’t ordinary pests like the ones they had faced a few months ago—these were mutated.
He sighed, then turned his focus back to Lydia, who was still on the battlefield.
He asked her about the mutated cat, and Lydia replied that it had already been taken care of by Elena.
Actually, he had wanted to join the battlefield as the Paradise Shop’s representative, but Ethan dismissed the idea.
He believed it was better for him to stay and protect the shop while letting the others handle the role.
That was when Lydia stepped up.
She volunteered herself, wanting to train under harsh conditions rather than stay safe behind walls.
She believed that worse things were coming, and preparing now wouldn’t be a bad thing.
Mr. and Mrs. Benetted were worried and tried to persuade her to stay, but Lydia stood firm.
She even mentioned Oslo’s name, saying he approved of her decision—knowing her parents would feel more at ease since he was her instructor.
In truth, she had been training for situations like this for months.
She wanted to stand on the frontlines, just like Elena—her idol and benefactor.
At first, Oslo was about to object. But after seeing her sharp glare, he gave in.
His girl was fierce—if he made her mad, she wouldn’t talk to him later, and that would be even worse.
So, Lydia and Daniel went to the western side, while Ramon and Jessa were assigned to the northern side.
Back in the present, Oslo quickly got to the point.
"Lydia, did you try using the pesticide on them?"
"I hadn’t thought about that. Hold on," she said, then walked to the other side of the camp and spoke with some soldiers.
"Hello, comrades. Could I ask a favor? Can you test this pesticide and see if it has any effect?"
The soldier looked at the masked staff member, confused by the request, but nodded respectfully.
He remembered how much help the Paradise Shop had been earlier.
"Just a moment," he replied, taking the pesticide and discussing it with his team.
Soon after, they ran a quick test.
It turned out that while the pesticide couldn’t kill the mutated pests, it did make them slow and dizzy—making them much easier to kill while they were disoriented.
"It can’t kill them, but it’s enough to make them disoriented," the soldier reported.
He gave a quick salute, then rushed off, eager to report the findings to his general.
Lydia blinked, slightly confused as he ran off before she could thank him—but she quickly brushed it off and contacted Oslo to share the results.
She relayed everything the soldiers had discovered.
Upon hearing the good news, Oslo was overjoyed.
He immediately reminded Lydia to take care of herself, and if the situation worsened, to retreat into the space for safety.
He then ended the communication.
Right after, he informed everyone about the results, prompting them to place pesticides at every corner of the unit’s corridor as a precaution.
