Chapter 229: Elena vs Dr.Cee
"Alright, lead the way," Elena said, trying to sense if they were part of the group secretly watching them.
The way Lieutenant Fern and his men behaved seemed sincere, but she still wanted to find out if their gratitude was real or just an act.
For now, she was curious about what those scientists truly wanted from them.
"Sure, please follow us," Lieutenant Fern replied, carrying boxes of Paradise Ointment with his men as they headed back to the southern camp.
As they walked, they talked about the situation in the area.
Many officers had been injured by the mutated creatures, and their bites were poisonous—making the need for medicine even more urgent.
After a few minutes, the southern camp finally came into view. Officers were actively fighting off the mutated pests.
The sound of missiles and gunfire filled the air, along with the desperate shouts of officers calling for help.
It was clear they were struggling against the relentless swarm.
Luckily, they had brought a large supply of ammunition, thanks to Dr. Cee’s earlier precautions.
"You see that red tent, right? Just head straight there, and you’ll find Dr. Cee," Lieutenant Fern said, pointing to the tent.
Elena and Ethan exchanged puzzled glances, wondering why the officer wasn’t coming along.
Lieutenant Fern continued with an apologetic tone, "I’d like to escort you, but I need to return to the battlefield immediately. Don’t bother looking for me later—we’re heading to the eastern side. I’ll be leaving soon with a few of my men."
"What do you mean?" Ethan asked, his eyes narrowing slightly with suspicion.
"Dr. Cee plans to lead the others to regroup with the military camp on the western side. But I have to assist my commander on the eastern front—they’re running low on ammunition and desperately need these supplies. So, we’re going in opposite directions," he explained, his tone firm but respectful.
After speaking, he turned and called over another officer.
"You there—escort them to Dr. Cee. Make sure they get there safely."
The officer quickly approached and saluted, ready to guide Elena and Ethan toward the red tent.
Ethan finally caught on. There seemed to be a rift between the group of scientists and the assault team.
Not that it mattered.
What puzzled him even more was why the government scientists insisted on regrouping with the military—when they could have just gathered all their officers from both the eastern and southern camps.
Something about that plan didn’t sit right—it felt off.
"Then, I wish you luck reuniting with your commander," Ethan replied.
If the officer was truly loyal and there to support his commander, then he was the kind of person worth befriending.
Soon after, Ethan and Elena followed the escort toward the red tent, staying vigilant as the feeling of being watched grew stronger with each step.
Elena quickly contacted Ethan through her [Telepathy], coordinating in case things turned hostile.
If there was an ambush, they needed to act together—no hesitation, no confusion.
"Do you feel it?"
"Hmmp. Seems they’re really observing us covertly. Wife, I think it’s way too dangerous to go in without a plan."
"Husband, if they try anything funny, I’ll just toss out some explosives and blow them to pieces. They don’t know who I am anyway, so it won’t lead back to us."
’There’s no reason to retreat now. If I back out, I’ll lose the chance to root out these pests. With their guards distracted by the mutated creatures, this is the perfect time to strike.’
Ethan gave her a sharp look, half amused and half worried.
"Alright, but be careful. Watch for any movement and escape immediately if things go south. You’re pregnant—your safety comes before everything else."
"I’ll listen to you," she promised.
As they reached the tent’s entrance, they could sense several people covertly surrounding them.
Still, they maintained a calm, composed front—pretending they were unaware.
Their confident, unbothered demeanor as they entered made Dr. Cee twitch with irritation. They looked far too calm, as if they didn’t see him as a threat.
He forced a smile and gestured toward the chairs inside the tent.
"Hello. Please, have a seat," he said in a courteous tone. "I thank you, on behalf of the government, for bringing the supplies.""
"Don’t thank us; you’ve paid for it. Is there anything else?" Elena said coolly, her tone casual yet edged with provocation.
’Let’s see what you’re hiding.’
The group of scientists bristled at her arrogance, clearly offended by her dismissive attitude.
"To be honest, you people are quite fascinating. Mind if we take a little blood? Maybe a small sample of flesh—for research purposes," Dr. Cee said with a gleam in his eye, revealing his true intent.
’Ahhh, heaven truly sent us a gift. Just what we’ve been waiting for.’
"What if we refuse?" Elena replied with a cold snort.
This Dr. Cee was clearly delusional.
She narrowed her eyes, trying to recall where she had seen his face before.
’His name sounds familiar.’
She searched her memory, trying to match the face and the name.
’Where have I heard it before? Dr. Cee... no, that’s not his real name.’
Dr. Cee let out a low laugh. "I wasn’t asking for your opinion. Just do as you’re told. If you resist, I might do something unpleasant before collecting your samples."
"Oh? I’d love to see you try," Elena shot back.
Then she tilted her head with a smirk.
"By the way, your alias sounds familiar. Or should I say... Dr. Fardo, from the Central Government Research Institute? It’s an honor to meet the man responsible for those human experiments."
Her voice dripped with sarcasm. She had finally remembered.
Back in her past life, during the fourth year of the apocalypse, this man’s name had become infamous.
The institute he ran was notorious for torturing mutated creatures and experimenting on ability users. But their arrogance became their downfall.
One day, they captured the younger brother of a gravity-user—one of the most powerful ability users in the military.
When the older brother found out, he unleashed his wrath, crushing the entire facility and killing everyone inside including himself.
The loss had shocked the military, and news of the massacre had spread like wildfire.
Dr. Cee’s expression hardened, his smile vanishing instantly.
He looked at them with rising dread.
Their information should’ve been top secret—not even the government’s upper ranks knew all of it.
Yet these two masked Paradise staff had exposed it so casually.
"What nonsense are you spouting?" he snapped, waving his hand toward Troy, silently commanding him to act.
He wasn’t in the mood for games anymore.
"Whether I told lies or not, you know the truth deep inside. How many cruel experiments have you done already? Maybe the gods are stepping in—maybe they sent us to stop your madness," Elena said with a cold chuckle, her stance sharp and alert as men with batons began to appear one by one.
Troy gave the signal, and his men moved to surround Elena and Ethan.
"Oh, look! We even have a guest from the Heather family," she added mockingly.
"By the way, how’s your grandpa Jack? You should tell him to retire. He’s too old to be meddling in military affairs in City D."
Her words struck a nerve, and Troy’s face twisted in shock.
’How did they know Grandpa is trying to control Military D?’
His eyes narrowed dangerously.
These two couldn’t be left alive. If they knew that much, they could become the biggest threat to their plans.
Yet, what unsettled him most was how calm they were, as if he and his men meant nothing to them.
"What are you waiting for? Capture them!" he shouted, his patience gone.
Elena scoffed and scanned the group.
"A bunch of clowns gathering like this—what a show. And batons? Really? You think that’s enough to handle us?" she said, unimpressed.
Then, without warning, she pulled out her silencer and fired—clean, quiet headshots, one after another.
She made sure none of the government officers nearby noticed.
From the look of it, all the men surrounding them were under Troy’s command.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Ethan moved swiftly as well, taking down the attackers with ease. Their crude attempt to capture them made it simple for him to defend himself.
Using only batons as weapons made Troy’s men seem almost laughable.
Still, their overwhelming numbers made the situation risky if the fight dragged on too long.
Realizing this, Troy glanced at Dr. Cee and asked for permission to injure them—just enough to stop them from escaping.
"Do whatever it takes, but don’t let them die. Shoot them in the legs so they can’t run," Dr. Cee ordered coldly.
Troy nodded and gave the signal for his men to aim at Elena and Ethan’s legs.
Gunfire then broke out.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Elena and Ethan moved fast, dodging the bullets skillfully.
The tent was too small for a proper fight, so Elena used one of her favorite tactics—she threw several tear gas canisters into the crowd.
Smoke quickly spread through the tent, thick and choking, clouding everyone’s vision.
She planned to take them out one by one—quietly—without using explosives that might alert the other government officers nearby.
