Chapter 228: The Scheming Dr.Cee

While Elena was busy handling the supplies, Dr. Cee, on the other hand, was already devising a scheme against the Paradise Shop.

With the mutated cat gone without a trace, he quickly shifted his focus to what he believed was a more practical goal.

He gathered his team of scientists for a private meeting inside a tent, ignoring the chaos still raging outside.

"Where exactly are the Paradise Shop staff? I haven’t seen any of them around here," one scientist asked.

"According to our intel, they’re currently with the military camps on the western and northern sides. They’re observing from a distance and helping fend off mutated creatures," another replied.

"That’ll make it harder if we want to capture one of them," Dr. Cee muttered, frowning.

"Any suggestions?" one of the scientists asked.

"Here’s an idea," Dr. Cee said, lowering his voice.

"Instead of joining the regrouping effort on the eastern side, we’ll divert our forces to the west. With all the chaos, we might be able to snatch one of the Paradise staff while they’re distracted fighting off the mutated pests."

"But, sir, with all the mutated creatures swarming the area, how are we supposed to regroup on western side?" a scientist questioned, worried.

"Idiot!" Dr. Cee snapped. "Tell the officer in charge of the assault to shift the operation’s focus to the western front. That’s an order."

Just then, Lieutenant Fern entered the tent, holding a paper in his hand and clearly overhearing the last part of the conversation.

He had just finished his call with the Paradise Shop and already prepared the promissory note, planning to have Dr. Cee sign it in exchange for the Paradise Ointment.

His eyes then narrowed at the sight of the gathered scientists.

"So, we’re abandoning the eastern side?" he asked coldly, his tone sharp as he glared at them.

He didn’t know what the scientists were secretly planning, but when he overheard they were abandoning the eastern side—where his commander was stationed—he felt a surge of anger.

They had already agreed to unite all police officers into one camp to fight off the mutated pests together.

But clearly, these scientists had a different agenda.

He wanted to walk out, but duty bound him to stay and protect them.

So, he stood straight and firmly demanded an explanation.

Seeing the assault team leader confront him, Dr. Cee quickly came up with an excuse, clearly annoyed.

"The military’s western side is closer than the east. It’s more logical to regroup there."

"But sir, my commander is expecting us. They’re also low on ammunition," Lieutenant Fern argued.

He had given his word that they would deliver supplies to that side, and he had no intention of breaking that promise.

Dr. Cee scowled, displeased at being challenged.

"Who’s in charge here—you or me? Your job is to clear a route for us to return safely to the evacuation center. The western camp is safer. Don’t disappoint us, Lieutenant."

Lieutenant Fern bit his tongue to hold back a curse, then silently handed over the promissory note, too disheartened to continue the conversation.

"What’s this?" Dr. Cee asked, taking the paper.

Lieutenant Fern then explained shortly, "The Paradise Shop asked for a signed pledge since we don’t have jades or antiques right now. This serves as proof we took their Paradise Ointment."

Dr. Cee raised a brow. "You’re going to meet them? How? With all these mutated pests still around?"

"They’ll come later to deliver it themselves," Lieutenant Fern replied, unaware of their hidden scheme.

Hearing this, the group of scientists exchanged wicked smiles, as if heaven had granted their wish.

Lieutenant Fern noticed their strange expressions and was taken aback. Their eyes were now warm and friendly, unlike before.

’What are they plotting now?’ he wondered.

Just as he was about to question them, Dr. Cee cut in. "Oh! Then lead them here once they arrive with the supplies. Here, take the paper with you—you may leave now."

He handed over the promissory note and dismissed him quickly.

Dr. Cee didn’t trust Lieutenant Fern; he was too upright and loyal.

As soon as Lieutenant Fern left, the scientists resumed their secret discussion. Dr. Cee then picked up his comms and called Troy to join their plan.

"Sir, you called for me?" Troy asked politely, stepping into the tent.

"Troy, we have a mission for you. Do it well, and we’ll hire you as our personal guard. You still have your team, right?"

"Yes, sir. What do you need?" he replied, puzzled but willing.

"Well, we’re expecting some visitors. I want you to capture them alive, if possible."

"May I ask who these visitors are?"

"The Paradise Shop staff. Think you can handle it?"

At the mention of his long-time enemy—the ones who had destroyed his Iron Gang—Troy’s eyes lit up. Eagerness surged through him.

"I’ll call my team right away, sir."

"Good."

Dr. Cee grinned, his mood finally improving after all the day’s frustrations.

’I may have missed the chance to study the mutated cat, but with the Paradise staff in my hands, I’ll have plenty of new material for experimentation.’

He chuckled darkly, already imagining the twisted experiments to come.

"Husband, I’ll head out for a while," Elena said, glancing at Ethan, who was busy assisting the military.

Hearing his wife, Ethan immediately stood up, unwilling to let her go alone.

"Wife, the situation is under control now. I’ll go with you," he replied with a wink, clearly not accepting a ’no’ for an answer.

Left with no choice, Elena nodded in agreement. Before leaving, she reminded her team once more to stay alert and put their safety first.

The couple quietly slipped away, heading toward the place they had agreed on earlier.

Along the way, they ran into several mutated creatures, but they quickly dealt with them.

However, when they found themselves surrounded, Elena activated[Blink] to escape. Then, using her Golden Tablet, she forced summoned Ethan to her side.

"There are still too many mutated pests," he said with a frown. "It feels like they’re going all out. How’s the situation in the building?"

"It’s still peaceful, according to Lydia at the branch shop and Butler Aki at the main shop," Elena replied.

"But after this, we should prepare—just in case the mutated pests change tactics and head toward the building."

"Alright. By the way, aren’t you feeling cold?" he asked, glancing at her. The cold in this area was even harsher than in the others.

"My spiritual energy keeps me warm. I’m more worried about you," she replied softly.

"I’m fine," Ethan reassured her. "Training on the rooftop these past few months helped a lot. And the well water made my body stronger.... I actually feel great."

"That’s good to hear, by the way, I have a gift for you later."

Ethan’s eyes lit up. "Really? What is it?"

"It’s a secret. My wedding gift to you, Husband. We’ve been married, but I haven’t given you anything yet."

"Alright," he said with a warm smile.

In truth, the child growing in her belly was already the greatest gift she had ever given to him.

But since his wife wanted to give another one, he was more than happy to accept it.

"I’ll look forward to it. I’ll definitely treasure it, wife."

Elena was about to mention that the gift could only be used once—and would vanish after that—so there was no need to treasure it.

But seeing how happy he looked, she stayed quiet and decided to explain it later.

Soon after, they arrived at the secluded area and retrieved the Paradise Ointment, placing the boxes down and leaving them for the government officers to collect later.

They then headed to the meeting point where Lieutenant Fern and his men were already waiting.

Seeing the masked Paradise staff dressed in anti-cold suits, but carrying no visible supplies, the officers were confused.

Still, they greeted them warmly.

"Hello, comrade. I’m the one who requested the Paradise Ointment," Lieutenant Fern said with a salute, then briefly introduced himself and his team.

"Hello, officers. Your items are stored in that area. Feel free to join us and pick them up yourself," Ethan replied, watching them carefully.

He recognized the man—he had worked with him on a case long ago and remembered him as someone righteous.

’Should I try recruiting them later? But Jetro said most police officers don’t want to leave the government... well, we’ll see.’

"Sure, thank you for the delivery. Here’s the promissory note. Just look for me later at the government evacuation center—I’ll assist you. It was signed by the personnel in charge of this area," Lieutenant Fern said, handing them the document.

Elena remained silent, letting her husband handle the exchange with the government officers. She still had trust issues when it came to them.

Instead, she focused on their surroundings, feeling as though someone—or something—was watching them.

She tried to locate the source, but whoever it was remained well hidden.

She contacted Ethan through [Telepathy], and he confirmed that he felt the same presence.

They then both became alert.

"Alright, follow us," Ethan said.

The officers nodded and followed them to the secluded spot, where several boxes of Paradise Ointment were neatly stacked and ready for pickup.

"Thanks again. By the way, our leader would like to speak with you," Lieutenant Fern added.

"Your leader... Dr. Cee?" Ethan asked.

"Yes," he confirmed, waiting for their response.

Elena and Ethan exchanged a look, pausing for a brief moment—then suddenly, they both felt a burning gaze locked on them from a distance.
