Chapter 37: The Quinn mmanor was sold!
It was a heavy question for a nine-year-old. He reminded her of those children that she had seen in the apocalypse, orphans that were left to care for their younger siblings.
She had also seen many children his age, caring for older parents and relatives that were sick or crippled. Most of them had been skin and bones, barely getting by themselves. It made her wonder if these children had survived the apocalypse.
Had they been killed by natural disasters or monsters? Had they awakened or fallen prey to cannibalistic starving adults?
In this life, she would save as many of those children as she could.
For now, she needed to clarify things with Ariel. Hades beat her there.
"Ariel, buddy. I love how you look out for your brothers, but I don’t want you to make it your whole life. There are adults in the family for that. I am here, so are your grandparents and some of your aunts and uncles. Sunshine is here too now; she will help out when she can."
Ariel leaned back. "Good enough."
Laughter unwittingly fled Sunshine’s mouth. The kid was way too serious for his age. He was the right successor for the Quinn group.
"My turn to answer your question and put you at ease." She said calmly. "I am not ready to have a baby so don’t worry about that. As for other things, I will do what I can. Not to brag but I have also stopped Castiel from eating fish from the little pond a few times.
I have tied Earl’s shoelaces and saved him from a bee attack when he climbed a tree in the back to eat honey directly from the comb."
Earl blushed.
"You may not remember this Ariel but when you were a baby, you spent a lot of time with me. I used to babysit you often when I was sixteen."
Hades felt the need to disappear into the couch. His marriage had become even more cliche. He was the wealthy billionaire that married his babysitter!!! Just wait till this reached Jon’s ears. It would become front page news too.
Maybe it would be the last thing people read before the apocalypse arrived.
"So, in my books, the three of us are friends." She concluded. "I will not force you to call me mom, but I will expect obedience. We are heading into tough times, if we are to make through, we need to trust each other. Can you trust me?"
"Can." Castiel shouted eagerly.
They all doubted if the little one understood but his eagerness made them laugh. The ice thawed and the air become softer. Dinner was served and they had their first official family meal together.
After dinner, the kids went to bed. Sunshine and Hades got to work. Everything that had been delivered was deposited into the space; Hades could not believe it when the armored cars vanished as well.
"How much space do you have exactly?" He inquired, unscrewing the cap of his third bottle of water that evening.
Maybe it was because his mind had the knowledge that drinking water would be scarce soon, but he was a lot more thirsty than usual.
"Tons." Sunshine answered easily, her gaze didn’t waver from the survival prep manuals he had got his men to print. "These need to be distributed as soon as possible, I may be wrong about this whole apocalypse timeline thing. Either that or things have sped up because of my return." She sent the excess of the manuals into her space.
They would be distributed during the apocalypse.
Hades nearly coughed up the water mid swallow. "Wait a damn minute! That can happen! How?" There was a trace of panic in his voice, he pretended to clear his voice when Sunshine cast him a sharp look. "I mean, I thought that you knew everything about this damn apocalypse including the timeline." His voice came out a lot calmer than before.
"I am not a god Hades, I don’t know everything, only what I went through. I found out something today that made me question everything. This is a big country, and the world is even bigger. Signs of the apocalypse may have started to show a long time ago." Sunshine took in the last box of imported wine boxes.
"What did you find out?" Hades queried but he got no answer. "At least tell me what is going to happen to my St. Margarita Island, I feel terrible that I sold it at a price less than what I bought it."
Sunshine dusted her hands and closed the door of the warehouse on the property. "It’s good that you sold it because it won’t be an island tomorrow. But I don’t want to say just in case I make the wrong prediction." She started moving back towards the house and he followed.
As she bypassed the backyard near the kitchen Sunshine heard maids complaining about the never-ending rain.
"I prayed to the heavens for rain, but it is a bit too much." Jill complained, wrapping the sweater tighter around her body.
Savanna whistled. "If only it could pour and empty the clouds, but it keeps stopping and restarting." She muttered irritably.
"The house is always dirty with muddy footprints on the floor doubling the cleaning work." Rakel voiced her displeasure.
Then the gossip switched to discuss the exit of some of the Quinn’s. Apparently, Hades had instructed all those that had taken money from him to leave the house immediately.
"Ha! Miss Fifi stood her ground and said that she was going nowhere. The others supported joined her, saying the same." Jill revealed. "Mr. Hades then announced that he had sold this mansion." She disclosed, pinching her mouth as regret of telling began to sink into her bones.
"Huh?"
"What?"
They let out different outcries expressing their disbelief, many had worked here for years. Some had lived there all their lives. To them, this was home. Where were they supposed to go?
"Maybe you heard wrong Jill." Rakel let out a half sob, chewing on her nails.
"Yes, Jill you usually distort the gossip to make it juicier, but this is not funny." Savanna’s trembling hand pointed at spatula at her friend.
"Have you guys not wondered why some of the Quinn’s packed up their things and left in the afternoon? It is because Mr. Quinn sold the house." Jill continued to show that she was knowledgeable on the matter.
Cathy whimpered. "Suni would have told us if we were losing our jobs, I mean she is still our friend, right?" She said with uncertainty.
Sunshine had been eavesdropping behind the door actively. Hades was eavesdropping without meaning to because he was waiting for her such that they could go to the bedroom together.
She slipped into the kitchen and knocked on the door. "Hello everyone, I have news to share."
Their hearts dropped faster than drop tower free-falling to the ground at an amusement park.
