Chapter 36: A family of five.
When she got home, she found that big tents had been put up in the compound, twenty one trucks were lined up, being offloaded by movers in the light rain. Three of the trucks contained Moon’s stolen supplies.
The residents of the Quinn manor watched in astonishment wondering why such things were being brought to their home.
The servants especially found the things going on around the manor odd. They had been odd ever since Moon opened her eyes and started talking about apocalypses and stealing food from the manor.
Rori approached Sunshine as soon as she walked to the front door. "Suni darling what is happening, these men say that you ordered for all these things to be brought here. What is going on with all the children’s books and stuff. I love that you are already warming up to the children but this is so much.
And some they say belong to Hades! I saw at least fifty trucks with medicines, military trucks and guns my lord! What is happening?" Her trembling hands covered her dark red painted lips. "I even overheard Hades on the phone asking if he could acquire rockets or missiles.
Lest I forget, thousands of drones were delivered too and driven off to Westbrook after Hades flew around a couple of them and checked their condition. He asked those men to get him a fighter drone!!! They asked him for thirty three million dollars."
In a trembling voice, she further asked Sunshine, "He is not planning to fund a terror group, is he?"
"Mrs. Quinn, Hades will be in the best position to answer your questions but you can be sure that he is not funding a terror group. Speaking of Hades, where is he?" Sunshine asked.
"With the kids on the roof top garden." Rori told her.
Sunshine nodded. She passed through the crowd of curious Quinn’s standing in the doorway and made her way to the bedroom she shared with Hades. She took a bath and changed into a long sleeved shirt, jeans and a heavy jacket.
She did not forget her tool belt. It had become a permanent part of all her outfits. As she was going downstairs, she got a text from Nimo which said that her friend had made it home safely.
Sunshine put her phone away and took the single elevator in the house to the rooftop garden. The rooftop garden of Quinn manor had a transparent glass roof which allowed one to enjoy the view of the sky without getting wet.
There was also a brick fireplace and sofas. The garden itself had only flowers which had been put there for the admiration of those that loved to spend time up there.
Hades was there with the boys, waiting on her. Someone had brought a television screen in there and they were playing video games together. The older boys were playing on their own and Castiel was sharing a gaming controller with his father.
Sunshine almost tripped over the cables. She steadied herself quickly by grabbing on to the back of a blue couch and drew in a relieved breath.
Hades saw her and he paused the game.
"Dad..." Earl whined.
"Your mother is here." Hades replied casually as he collected the controllers from his sons hands. As he was taking Ariel’s he seemed to realize what he had called Sunshine and he looked at her. "I.." He winced.
She understood the worry and shook her head. "No worries, a step mother is also a mother."
She sat down and invited Castiel to join her. Without hesitation, the little one run to her. Unlike Ariel and Earl that were aware of Amber, their birth mother, Castiel had no memory of her.
For him, Sunshine being his mother was something that made him happy. He climbed up onto her laps and hugged her, grinning innocently.
Earl was unsure. He did not remember much about Amber and he only recalled her face clearly when he saw pictures. But he had no clear memories of the time they spent together. He thought Sunshine was cool and he wanted to touch her hammer.
Ariel, was the hard nut to crack of the three children. So far, he had not expressed joy or sadness as a result of his father’s remarriage.
"Boys, this is your mother, Sunshine Quinn." Hades said to his sons. "I know that my marriage was abrupt and you have questions. Now is the time to address those questions and worries. Ask us anything."
Sunshine had known the boys all their lives but this was the first time she was talking to them as a step mother. For as long as she was Hades’s wife, she had some responsibility for them. So, this moment made her nervous.
Ariel, arms folded like a tiny lawyer-in-training had his eyebrows suspiciously arched up wards. "Why did you give us swords?"
Sunshine was smiling with a frown as the question was unexpected. "To defend yourselves if you ever run into trouble."
"But we don’t know how to fight with swords." he said.
"I will teach you." Sunshine volunteered.
Castiel raised his face. "Can I call you mommy?"
She pinched his cheek. "Of course, you can call me anything you want to Cass. We have been friends for four years after all."
"Daddy I have a friend-mommy." Castiel shouted joyfully.
Hades tried not to smile but he could not help himself. His son was adorable. Also, it was the first time he was seeing Sunshine smile. She was always walking around with a straight stern face so seeing her light up made her softer and more beautiful.
Earl cleared his throat and flipped through a notebook very seriously: "We siblings have discussed it and come up with some rules if you are going to be our step mother."
"This is because we go to school and we know the truth." Ariel butted in rudely. "You must be historically aware that stepmothers don’t have the greatest reputations. Like Hansel, Cinderella or teacher Bernice"
Hades tried not laugh.
Sunshine hid her smile and pretended to listen seriously. "Fair enough." Later, she would have to ask Hades about teacher Bernice.
Earl started reading the rules. "Number one--no stealing our snacks. Number two--no physical abuse. Number three--no turning us into goats like that lady did in my dream. Number four--you have to let us win at games. Number five--you must buy us candy even when daddy says no. Number six--you must always be on our side no matter what especially me when I get into fights with Chip Sanders at school."
His list came to an end.
Ariel leaned forward, as serious as Hades was when he was ruthlessly dealing with a business opponent. "Listen, I don’t hate you and I am not saying this because the news and uncle Damien called you bad names. I have been the oldest since forever.
I make sure that Earl does not play with sunflowers because he is allergic to them, but he won’t stay away from them because they are bright colored. I tie his shoelaces because he does not know how to do the loop."
"I can loop too." Earl argued.
Ariel ignored him. "I mash Castiel’s bananas because he does not like to eat them whole. I keep him out of the glue basket and stop him from eating the fish in the small pond. I watch out for my brothers all the time. So...." He paused, turning his eyes to his father. "I am not going to stop just because there is a step mother now. Will she notice the things I notice? Will she have her own baby and ignore my brothers like uncle Damien said?"
