Chapter 35: Unnatural progress at Westbrook.

Very extravagantly and very loudly, Nimo yelled, "What the hell?"

"So, I have a space, and I can keep supplies inside." Pointing at her friend and cautioning her sternly, Sunshine added, "This stays between us. We have always trusted each other with our lives, and it was the same way in the apocalypse. That is why I am sharing my greatest secret with you."

"Are you kidding, I would never tell anyone about our space. An apocalypse is all about survival...food, drinking water and survival." She placed her hands on Sunshine’s shoulders, massaging them gently. "You, my friend are the goose that lays golden eggs and I will guard you jealously. With you by my side, I will not have to drink pee when the world falls apart."

Sunshine almost grimaced.....almost. But such a thing was not unheard of in the apocalypse. They had even found various ways to turn urine into water.

"Turn around." Nimo told her.

Just as Sunshine slowly turned on her feet, she saw a fist aiming for her face. It came fast--a blur of knuckles that she caught with one hand quickly.

Nimo smirked, "You were not lying when you said that you learned how to fight in the apocalypse. Show me your skills."

Sunshine grinned and took a few steps back from her friend. "Nimo, as painful as this might sound to you, I am beyond you now. Are you sure that you want to test me?"

They circled each other, surrounded by the silence of the empty warehouse.

Sunshine stepped right, baiting. Nimo pivoted on her right leg, performing her signature kick. Sunshine caught it swiftly and swept her right leg out, catching Nimo off guard.

Nimo fell down but she did not stay there, she rolled and jumped up like the trained soldier she was. Without delay, she pressed forward, and a fight commenced. Jab, elbow, grab, they exchanged blows, aiming for every weak point on each other’s bodies.

The fight dragged on into twenty minutes: not to win but to reveal. It ended with Sunshine’s fingers digging into Nimo’s throat with a blade at her throat.

Voice breathless, Nimo slapped Sunshine’s hand. "We agreed to exchange pointers not actually kill each other."

"I would never kill you, Nimo." Sunshine withdrew her hand. "You are the love of my life."

Nimo raised an eyebrow, "Do I look like your hot billionaire husband A.K.A. Mr. wolf of the business world."

Sunshine rolled her eyes.

"So, what’s it like being Mrs. Quinn?" Nimo asked curiously.

Sunshine pulled on Moon’s hand, "We can discuss this in the car as we drive to Westbrook Mountain. I need you to take a look at it through the eyes of a soldier and tell me what is missing.

You can also look at my list of supplies and tell me what you think is missing. And then, you can tell me how many of your soldier friends you can invite to the base."

The car ride took them another three hours, and they stopped on the way to buy hotdogs and coffee. The sun was about to set when they arrived. The place had changed.

Sunshine was pleasantly surprised by how fast the work was moving, because there were five thousand workers on the grounds. The first outside wall was almost finished. The second one was halfway done.

If anyone had told her that a wall around twenty five acres of land could be built in one night and one day, she would have called it a dream or a joke.

It was not just walls but inside, they were constructing small houses as well that were easy to finish. The walls were joined together which made it easy for houses to be built.

"Good evening Mrs. Quinn." Dwayne greeted, tipping his sun hat as a sign of respect to her.

With a satisfied smile still on her face, Sunshine replied to his greeting naturally. "I like what I see Dwayne." She said, giving him an approving nod. "This is Nimo you will be seeing more of her around here." She made an introduction.

Then she pulled out a copy of the blueprints and laid on the bonnet of the car. "Dwayne, I need you to hire some more men to construct a huge basement plus a hidden escape route out of the main house, leading to the mountain." She pointed to where she wanted the hidden underground passage to be positioned.

A frown represented Dwayne’s confusion, but he had learnt not to ask Sunshine random questions. "Yes Mrs. Quinn, adjustments will be made just like you have ordered." He cocked his head for a fleeting second and excused himself.

"You worry too much Suni, only friends and family are going to seek refuge here, no one would dare to harm another or even make this place unsafe." Nimo folded her hands and continued to study the blueprints.

Releasing a short scoff, Sunshine motioned for them to leave. "You say that because you have not seen what the apocalypse does to people, it brings out the worst in everyone. You will be amazed at what humans can do when they see that the world is ending, even a holy man will betray his God." She said a lot without saying much.

"Your phone." Nimo jutted her chin towards the buzzing phone that was strapped in one of the pockets on Sunshine’s waist tool bag.

Sunshine winced on seeing the caller. "Oh shoot!" She cursed on remembering that she was to meet Hades’ kids formerly that evening. She took the call and told him that she was on the way.

"Let’s take a helicopter." She told Nimo.

"I cannot believe that you are a mother now." Nimo laughed as they entered one of the ten helicopters on the property. All were fueled and the pilots and their families had already moved to Westbrook.

Sunshine pushed her mouth to the side. "They already have a mother, but I will do my best to make sure that I have a good relationship with them. I have no plans to replace Amber in their hearts especially because this marriage is a temporary situation." She stated.

Nimo’s eyeballs recoiled in their sockets as if physically stricken by her friend’s words. "I knew there was more to this marriage than what meets the eye, I was wondering how Hades Quinn agreed to an arrangement that was not fattening up his bank account." Nimo’s lips curved into a curious smile.

"He knows about the apocalypse, we agreed to get a divorce at some point, but we put that on pause because we need each other. I need his money to stock up while he needs my knowledge on this apocalypse." Sunshine disclosed.

The rotors of the helicopter started turning, making a clack-clack-clack sound. They put their conversation on pause and waited until they were in the air to talk again a little louder than necessary.

"Is that why the Quinn group is being sold after declaring bankruptcy?" Nimo asked her friend, blinking a lot for some reason.

"Yes." Sunshine confirmed.

Nimo leaned back in the seat. She had more questions, but they would have to wait until they could talk without having scream.

In the silence, she came up with a story that she would tell her family to convince them to move to Westbrook immediately.
