Chapter 27: Moon’s early departure.

That night as some of the Quinn’s contacted their lawyers to find out how much money they could milk from Hades, the Raine’s packed only what was most important and left the Quinn manor. Some of the servant’s saw them leave spread the gossip, upon landing into Owen’s ears, the assistant rushed to inform his boss who was in his bedroom, helping his wife dismantle some of the guns that she had kept away in her space.

At the same time, he was massaging ointment into his sore leg, doing it slowly.

"What is it, Owen? I said that no one should bother us tonight." The kids had already come up to say goodnight. He and Sunshine had eaten dinner from the bedroom. They were busy and didn’t need more family drama.

Sunshine winced in disapproval as she took the ointment from him. "You have over strained this leg, and you are massaging it like it belongs to a baby. I will help you out."

She brought her hand down and applied more pressure compelling her husband to groan in pain.

[System has detected a human leg in need in repair. Does the host wish to fix it?]

A yes or no option was given to her. She chose to wait for a while. At least until Owen was gone.

Owen was watching the boss and his wife silently, wondering when Hades had become tolerant of people forcing him to things he did not desire.

"Do not just stand there, say something." Hades snapped at Owen, shifting to sit in a more comfortable position and pushing Sunshine’s hands away.

Owen swallowed hard and began to speak. "Sir, the Raine’s have left the manor." He reported.

Brow curving upwards, Hades’ eyes narrowed at his secretary. "Left?" His curious gaze shifted to Sunshine who seemed to be engrossed in reassembling a machine gun.

"Yes, they took most of their belongings and drove out, I do not think that they will be living here any longer." He answered, his gaze pinned on Sunshine. She was too unbothered for his comfort.

Now was the time to pitch in and explain, after all, she was a Raine. Maybe she knew something about their sudden departure that he did not.

Sunshine felt his eyes on her, so she looked up. "This does not come as a surprise at all, from their behavior earlier tonight, I just knew that they were not going to stay here any longer especially now that they have a goose that lays golden eggs." Her nonchalant tone bothered Hades, he did not know why Sunshine’s voice turned cold whenever she spoke about his adopted son.

Sometimes she called insulting names but mostly she called him a fool. What was the secret between Sunshine, Moon and Cassius?

"And Cassius? Where have they left him?" Hades asked after a few moments of silence.

Owen cocked his head. "They took him along with them. Apparently, he did not put up any form of resistance, he followed them obediently." He repeated what he had heard the servants say.

"Damn it!" Hades hurled a small pillow across the room. "Go and file a report with the police, notify...."

Sunshine twisted her lips to the side and cut into his orders. "Don’t bother, that was one disloyal person that nature has selected to help you get rid of. Cassius is not a complete fool, he is normal. His reasoning is the same as that of a seventeen-year-old teenager.

He is capable of understanding what is going on around him and making decisions. I suspect that he is the person behind the stolen funds with help of course. During the apocalypse, he awakened a superpower, adopted the name the eighth king and built a whole base.

He never saved a single member of the Quinn family when they were dying. He is not family, the sooner you let go of him, the better." She provided a clipped explanation and coached a gun.

Owen stepped back as the gun was pointing his way.

"What are you talking about Sunshine Raine? Cassius....he...a doctor confirmed his diagnosis. He sees the doctor once a week and the doctor sends me updates. Are you sure about what you are claiming?" Hades looked at her keenly.

Shrugging, Sunshine replied, "I spent more time with Cassius than any of you. Maybe he bribed the doctors, I don’t know. He is a fool, but you still gave him an emergency bank card with millions of dollars. Check his expenditures if you want to know.

But we don’t have time for all that nonsense, it is better to spend time training our skills than looking for a fake fool." She excused herself and moved to her uncle’s house.

She needed to see for herself what had been left behind. If it was useful, she would take it away. The house was disorganized and from the look of things, they had not taken much. Even their framed pictures had remained behind except for one that had just the three of them on Moon’s preschool graduation.

They had left a note on the fridge for her--Moon, specifically was the one that left the note behind.

[You may think you have won Sunshine, but you have not. Just wait for twelve days to pass and then your suffering will begin. I wish you a very slow painful death. All that I suffered, you get a taste of it.

P.S. Thanks for the bracelet, I will use this lucky charm well and don’t worry about Cassius, he has already forgotten you.]

"Hmm." Sunshine crumpled up the note and opened the refrigerator. It was empty, only ice cubes were left behind. Even the out-of-date cheese had been taken, and she doubted that it had been thrown out.

She sank into the sofa for a moment, gathering her thoughts. She felt nothing no sadness or rejection because she had been left behind. In fact, she felt relieved because with Moon gone, her purchases could be delivered here directly, and she could take things into the space from home.

As for her uncle and aunt had gone with Moon, they were her problem now. She had no idea what a burden they were. In her last life, they had gone with her to help take care of Cassius.

Through the journey, they had pushed her out whenever they needed to save their skins. Thanks to her aunt and uncle, Sunshine had starved, lost a toe and got a permanent burn mark on her back after her uncle awakened a pyrokinesis superpower and accidentally burned her.

When Moon reunited with them, all her parents did was complain about how inadequate Sunshine had been.

A ringing in her head called for her attention.

[Host the phone is ringing, there is a job request for you, do you accept?]

Naturally, Sunshine tapped yes, and the details of the job appeared.

[Host you are to patch a weather absorbent under suit. The suit has a sensor malfunction; it cannot detect environmental changes therefore failing to adjust according to the sudden changes in the weather.]

"Interesting." A smile grew on Sunshine’s lips; this seemed like a suit she would need to increase her chances of survival in the apocalypse.
