Chapter 22: How many walls?
Elsewhere, the Raine family of three, Dustin, Rowena and Moon found themselves on the receiving end of another surprise.
They had gone to pay a visit to the house Sunshine had inherited. Moon wanted to sell it to make up for some of the loss she incurred when she handed over the bracelet to Sunshine.
To their surprise, the old tenant informed them that he was the new owner of the house. As early as 8:00 a.m. in the morning, he had bought the house for seven hundred fifty thousand dollars.
He had also been surprised by how quick the realtor had been to agree to the sell. [He did not know that the realtor had made one hundred thousand dollars from the easy sale.]
As the Raine’s drove back to Quinn manor, Dustin was still in shock that he had not yet managed to find the right words to express the fury he was feeling.
Moon was openly cursing Sunshine.
"Do you think she wants to help Hades solve his financial troubles?" Rowena voiced a question that nobody had had thought to raise.
"Right." Moon clapped her hands once. "You are right. I was worried that she maybe she knew about the apocalypse, and she is gathering money to stockpile. I had not even thought about the bankruptcy."
Moon had already told her parents all about the apocalypse. They believed in her one hundred percent and supported all of her plans.
"Is Quinn group really bankrupt?" Rowena asked. Her voice carried uncertainty.
Moon could not answer, for she did not know. In her last life, Hades had kept a big distance from her.
She never slept in his bedroom again or spoke to him after the drugging incident. He had been paralyzed and bedridden until the apocalypse came around. Additionally, even when she remained on Quinn manor grounds, she had to live in the house where her parents lived now all through the acid rain months, so she did not know what went on in the main mansion.
When she saw Hades again, the endless cold had come, and he was walking just fine. She had assumed that he had healed sometime during the three months of acid rain.
She was glad of course, thinking that she could depend on him but then, his ex-wife Amber had showed up. They had been setting out for Westbrook at the time. Moon never made it there.
Moon grimaced. The other woman she hated more than Sunshine was Amber Carpenter.
"If truly Quinn group is finished, then we will have to hasten our departure before they ask us for the one hundred million." Rowena suggested.
All the Raine’s agreed. They needed to leave as quietly and as quickly as possible.

Meanwhile, on Sunshine’s side, they were back on the road, driving to the private hangar where the helicopter had parked.
Dwayne was asking questions about the new construction plans she had provided. He could not see how they could bring it all together in such a short period of time.
"This kind of construction needs at least three months. The two-week deadline you set is impossible." He shook his head.
They all agreed with what Dwayne had just said, a fortnight was just too little time for such complex work to be finished.
Sunshine knew that too, if she had returned perhaps six months earlier then maybe it would have been possible. But she had not been that lucky, so she was making do with what she had.
"I know that Dwayne which is why the men should begin with what is most important. To me, it is the walls, without them we will become prey to monsters and humans that might as well be monsters themselves. Begin with the walls and security and then other things can follow. Hire more men, if it means having one thousand workers that were taking turns to workday and night, do it."
Dwayne shrugged. With the right manpower, it could be done. Maybe.
"And you are serious about the height of these walls? Six and eight feet? Why do they have to be two walls?" Dwayne asked.
As Hades’s head of security, this interested him the most. He was not deaf, he had heard all this apocalypse talk and unlike his boss and Owen, he was not a believer. None the less, he was interested in hearing what the madam was thinking.
Creasing her brow, Sunshine began to wonder whether Dwayne was the right man for the job. "Hades can you find someone that will not question orders? Dwayne here might decide to act smart and deviate from the plan." Sunshine said. There was no trace of humor in her voice.
"N-no ma’am, I was just asking to be certain." Dwayne politely Interrupted, the last thing he wanted was to get on Sunshine’s bad side because she seemed to have Hades’s ear.
One wrong whisper and he would be out of a job.
Sunshine decided to answer Dwayne’s question about why she wanted two walls. "The outer wall is to protect us from anything that might want to get inside. The inner wall separates us from the larger population.
People cannot be trusted, only those are willing to contribute and make some achievements will live behind the inner wall. Besides, in case something makes it into the outer wall, we have time to prepare from behind the inner wall."
"Add a third and fourth wall." Hades said. If they had time, he would have suggested up to six walls.
Dwayne’s mouth parted in shock.
"Hire two thousand men, fly them in if need be." Hades ordered. "Get it done in a week."
Dwayne nodded and asked Owen to drop him off at the next stop, he was returning to the mountain while the others were heading to Runfield.
After dropping Dwayne off, they continued on their way. Owen saw it as an opportunity to brief the Quinn’s on Moon’s latest activities.
"Suni...Mrs. Quinn..." he began
"You do not have to change the way you address me just because I married your boss." Sunshine told Owen, she had noticed that he was still struggling to adjust to the that the girl that used to respectfully address him as sir was now his madam.
A little grateful smile formed on his lips.
"Call her Mrs. Hades." Hades said in a very serious voice. Even the look on his face was serious as though it was any other day and he was making a random decision.
Owen’s smile turned into a frown.
Sunshine was even frowning more than Owen. Mrs. Hades!! Shouldn’t it have been Mrs. Quinn? Was it because his mother was Mrs. Quinn.
Hades cleared his throat.
Owen got the message from his boss. Do your job, it said. "There is construction taking place in the Rainhounds mountain village. Pastor Salem has been spotted there a few times and each time he visited he was accompanied by large, covered trucks.
He has told his flock that it is the promised land, and they are selling their stuff to buy a place on the said promised land and he is selling tickets to those that wish to have residence there." He reported, his foot stepped on the gas pedal as they came to a red light.
Hades made a knowing sound. "Your cousin Moon Raine has been stock piling as well, but I thought that she was keeping her stock in Crosstown. She bought an underground bunker there." He folded his arms. "Has she moved her supplies?"
Crosstown was a city with the biggest number of underground bunkers. It was a haven for doomsday preppers.
Sunshine covered her mouth and laughed naughtily. Now that she knew where Moon’s supplies were, should she loot them or not?
