Chapter 21: Walls to keep something out.
Mayor Townsend loved money the most. It was his mother, father, wife, best friend and child. He had all those, but he loved money more than he loved them.
He glanced at the money and looked at Hades, his legs particularly. Didn’t the news claim that he was fully paralyzed? How was a paralyzed man walking on his two feet?
"Damn reporters." he muttered under his breath. They seemed to be reporting all the wrong news on Hades Quinn. Because of them, he had almost offended one of the wealthiest men in the country.
"One million dollars. It is enough to cover any inconveniences and make you turn a blind eye to my affairs." Hades said.
Mayor Townsend licked his lips. One million dollars!! Hades Quinn was truly as generous as always when he needed to buy off someone. His fingers hovered the money, but unfortunately, he did not get to touch it.
Owen snapped the briefcase shut, narrowly missing the mayor’s fingers. "Mr. Mayor, you can only touch this money after you have stamped the papers."
He pushed the papers in front of the mayor.
"Of course, of course." Mayor Townsend’s expression morphed into an understanding one. "Let us see what we have here..." His gaze scrutinized the information detailed on the papers, giving it the briefest of glances. All he cared about was the money.
Sunshine suddenly pulled the papers to her side, wishing to explain quickly because she assumed that Townsend would spend forever going over every little detail so as to increase the size of the bribe Hades was giving him.
"Some of the details will be adjusted during construction like the wall. It will not be six feet tall but rather eight and it will be electrified. The top of the wall will have electrified glass or razor wire. The outside will have ballistic steel panels and slippery surfaces to deter scaling." She boldly stated, her eyes pinned on the details.
Upon seeing the construction plans even more, Sunshine realized that there were many changes that had to be made. Fortunately, she and the system had made their own construction blueprints which she pulled out of the bag and placed on the table. "Approve these instead Mr. Mayor." She ordered; her index finger gently pushed them towards the confused mayor.
"And who are you supposed to be?" Mayor Townsend asked, folding his hands. Hades could order him around but not some tiny young woman employee of his.
Hades’ fingers tapped on the desk lightly. "This is my wife, Sunshine Quinn." He introduced her.
Eyes wide like saucers, Mayor Townsend’s shocked gaze traveled between the wife and husband. "Wife? Mr. Quinn you are married? How come and since when? Did my invite get lost in the mail?" He blurted out the questions which passed through his mind.
There was no news of a Quinn marriage anywhere. It seemed that this was another thing that the news had missed. What the hell were the reporters doing?
"Focus Townsend, stamp the damn papers." Hades growled. His marriage was a private affair; he did not owe anybody a wedding invitation.
Even if there had been a wedding, Mayor Townsend would not have made it to the guest list. They were not friends or relatives.
Mayor Townsend feigned a cough and returned his focus on the papers. As he observed the drawings Sunshine had provided, his eyes grew narrower and narrower.
"Any problem?" Dwayne asked, taking note of the mayor’s hesitation.
Letting out a loud wince, he arched an eyebrow. "Something seems off here. You said that you want to construct a resort and entertainment city, but you want to construct two walls, eight feet high for the outside one and six feet for the inside one. Moreover, you want the outside wall electrified? In addition to razor wire I see pressure sensitive ground sensors. Why? It seems like you want to hide something inside the wall." He massaged his thin beard.
"Hmm more like keep something from getting in." Sunshine answered.
The mayor nodded. "Ah! The troublemakers and poachers, I get it." He winced again. "But why do you need four ten feet high watch towers? Five hundred cameras, half of which are infrared and night vision. Acoustic sensors, sirens, motion activated spotlights, remote locking gates, my goodness one would think that you are going to construct a fortress and not a resort." He commented, even though he loved money that he had not sweated for, this deal seemed too risky.
These plans seemed to be more for a prison than a place where people would come to have fun. Who installed high frequency sound emitters at a resort?
"I am not certain about this Mr. Quinn." He shook his head.
He seemed to be wavering, and Hades did not want that.
"I am going to invest a lot of money in this project, two billion at least. You do not expect me to leave my investment unguarded now do you?" Hades leaned forward. "This resort and entertainment city helps you as well Townsend. Elections are close, when the locals learn of how many jobs they will get and the development coming to Westbrook they will praise you. Think of all the tourists that will be flooding to this place, all voters will be in your favor including myself for I will be backing you." He winked at him.
The mayor stiffened at Hades’ words, volts of excitement shocking his body. He quickly pulled out the stamp and brought it down on the papers approving the construction plans immediately.
"I am excited that you have decided to invest in Westbrook Mr. Quinn, you will not regret it." Mayor Townsend said, a wide smile that reached his eyes tugged on his lips.
The moment they left the office, Townsend picked up his phone and made a call to Allan Fischer, a reporter for the local news that he was in bed with financially.
"You will never guess who has just left my office right now. Hades fucking Quinn! Everyone has got it wrong, he is not paralyzed, and he is not broke. He went and got himself hitched to a young woman. I think she convinced him to step back from business and retire.
You should have seen them in my office; she has got him by the balls. He is building a resort and entertainment city in Westbrook."
Thirty minutes later, in an office in the high rise that was one among many in the middle of the city, Jon Kingsley sat down, put his phone on the table and called in his personal assistant.
Trevor, entered the office in a panic, pushing up his glasses that kept slipping down from his nose. "Yes, Mr. Kingsley."
"Contact the M and A team and tell them to stop buying Quinn group’s subsidiaries." Jon Kingsley ordered him.
Trevor was shocked "Why sir?"
His boss, Jon Kingsley and Hades Quinn were business rivals. Only an hour ago, his boss was barking at everyone to acquire as much of Quinn group as possible. It was supposed to be this big middle finger gesture to Hades. Why the sudden change of heart now?
"Because that bastard is conning us all, that’s why." Jon swiped the nearest files on his desk, angrier than a bull seeing red. "Find out everything that Hades Quinn and his supposed new wife Sunshine Quinn have been up to. I am giving you one hour Trevor. One hour or you are fired."
