Chapter 20: Collapse of the Quinn Empire.
Hades climbed into the car and closed his eyes, thinking on the newest information that she had given him. It seemed, he would have to get a map and ask her to mark off those safe and green zones.
If and when they survived the apocalypse, he would begin rebuilding his business empire. The safest places to invest in or start from would be those areas.
As for what she said about selling off his assets, the plans were already underway. When he woke up to the rain just like Sunshine had said and he received a heavily deducted report from the scientists involved in the project, he knew then that something was wrong.
If the government was proud of the success of the project, why deduct details? The scientists should have been proud and showing off to investors that their investment had paid off. Instead, they were hiding the results of their research.
Anytime a company that sought his investment behaved that way, he would reject them. Ninety nine percent of the time, they turned out to be fraudulent businesses.
So, he had called his CFO, lawyers and bankers and instructed them to work as team and sell off all his property except for the first house that he ever bought. He kept it for sentimental reasons. Maybe it would still be standing five years later.
"Should I include information about awakening and super humans?" Sunshine shook him awake, asking a question.
Hades was jolted out of his thoughts. "You mentioned those a few times. What kind of superpowers will people awaken. Do you know what will trigger it?"
Talking about the apocalypse was something she loved to do so she was glad to do so."For some there was no explanation, in some cases it was infection of the mist, for others it was through killing the monsters from the mist. One scientist discovered a way to use the bodies of the monsters to make awakening agents. But they were so expensive that only a lucky few got their hands on them.
And even after awakening, one needed to train and force their body to exceed normal limits in order to upgrade. Around the fourth year of the apocalypse, a ranking list was made, and super humans were lumped into classes. S for superior to F for the lowest ranks."
Hades was fascinated, he wanted to hear more.
"The first people to awaken superpowers awakened survival related powers like enhanced senses. Then they evolved and you had special categories like regeneration and those with spaces where things could be kept. Maybe because of the acid rain, there were others that could absorb toxic materials like acids and radiation."
To Hades and Owen, it sounded as if she was sharing ideas for a movie.
"When the endless cold came, more awakenings swept in. Pyokinetics came out of the woods. Then it was cryokinetics with ice and water manipulation, geokinetics that could manipulate the earth." Sunshine turned her entire body to look at Hades.
Her eyes however seemed to be looking past him as she was lost in the memories. "Then it became random. Telepathy, mind control, precognition healing touch." She frowned. "I think those are the ones I knew of. "No, wait...there is one more.
I came across a superhuman that could absorb the powers of other super humans through touch. I barely escaped that fight with my powers. I lost half of my entire team. By then, it was a must for every scavenging team to have at least one or more superhuman. The most powerful teams were made up of only super humans."
In a dead serious voice, she warned Hades. "If you awaken a superpower in the apocalypse, do not let random people touch you. Not every superhuman was eager to announce the fact that they were awakened. Some hid their abilities, and with good reason. If you get regeneration powers, tell no one or you will be captured as food."
Owen swallowed. Those were dangerous times indeed.
Dwayne tapped Owen and showed a glimpse of something on his phone. "Sir you better check the online news outlets right now." Owen activated the dash monitor to share the news which was being broadcast.
It was talking about Quinn group being chopped into parts for sale.
Hades switched on his phone and found three dozen missed calls and about one hundred messages. "Let us see how bad it is." He murmured as he checked online.
He was expecting the news about the liquidation to travel fast, so it was not surprising.

Sunshine looked away from the tiny Tv screen, taken aback that he had already started to sell off his properties. "Why didn’t you say something?" She punched him playfully around the shoulder area. "This is awesome."
Without noticing, she was beginning to let her guard down when she was around him.
"Are you that happy?" Hades sneered, but a smile tugged on his lips.
On seeing his wide smile, Owen hit the brakes sharply; Instinctively, Hades reached out, placing a protective arm in front of Sunshine.
"Good Lord Owen, are you trying to kill us!" He naturally asked, pulling his arm back.
Owen apologized immediately. "I am sorry sir, something just crossed so suddenly." He massaged his eyes.
"Are you okay?" Hades asked.
Owen nodded. "Yes, I am. Thank you for asking Sir." He answered swiftly.
"Not you, Owen." Hades responded, his gaze shifted to his wife, and he repeated the question in a softer tone.
Sunshine nodded once and focused her eyes on the road; she was used to these kinds of bumpy rides. In the apocalypse, you just run over whatever you hit and kept going.
If you stopped to check, you were often ambushed.
Owen’s expression morphed into one of astonishment. Was Hades Quinn showing concern for his wife? Was he interested in her romantically?
After his wife had left home with no explanation, Hades’ heart had been replaced by a stone when it came to all women that had no blood ties to him. Was the stone bound to be cracked?
It was impossible. This was an arranged marriage, and the couple was only getting along to achieve their mutual interests. He was over thinking things. Owen shook his head and resumed driving.
When they arrived at the town hall, they all went straight to the mayor’s office. Inquisitive eyes pinned on Hades who walked with his head held high up in the air. When he met the eyes of those looking at him, they looked away quickly. He was a very intimidating man.
Some people were puzzled by the way he was carrying himself with dignity despite the downfall of his company.
Inside the mayor’s office, Hades sat in one of the visitor’s office chairs and so did the people he came with.
"Mr. Quinn, I was surprised when my secretary told me that you actually came to see me." Mayor Townsend cleared his throat, moving his chair from side to side in a demeaning way. "You know with everything that is happening..." The words trailed off.
Hades went straight to the point. "I am not here to talk about my troubles; I need you to approve of the construction of this project in the Westbrook Mountains immediately if possible." His tone left no room for negotiation.
Mayor Townsend’s brows almost launched off his face like a rocket. "Construction project? Mr. Quinn are you not broke? The news is everywhere, that you are bankrupt because you failed to pay off your debts." He spoke more respectfully because construction meant money.
He sat up and humbled himself. It seemed like the news outlets there was false.
A belittling chuckle escaped Hades. "Selling off my assets does not mean that I am broke Townsend, I plan on redeveloping my land in the Westbrook Mountains, build a giant resort and entertainment city. I believe that it benefits you and this town as well." He pointed at the drawers. "Get them damn stamp out and stick it on the blueprints." He ordered firmly.
Owen placed a black briefcase on the table and opened it. It was filled with cash, new notes whose wonderful smell tugged at the heartstrings of the corrupt mayor.
