Chapter 19: A base in the making.
In her last life, Sunshine had not been lucky enough to be one of those that sought shelter on Westbrook Mountain. When the apocalypse came, the Quinn family had split into groups.
Some remained at the manor, like Hades. Of course, this meant that Moon also remained at the manor. Hades’s, parents, his children, some of his cousins and his grandfather had headed for Westbrook. Sunshine did not know if they made it.
The Quinn family had a safe house in Colonado state and that was where Sunshine, Cassius, Warren, Joy, some aunts and uncles and some servants had headed. It took their group six months to reach there by foot. By the time they arrived, half of them were dead.
The safe house was already occupied and everything had been looted. The journey had been made for nothing.
From what she heard in whispers, around the fourth year of the apocalypse, some of the Quinn’s that made it to Westbrook had been lucky enough to live.
In this life, she was betting on Westbrook Mountain. Right now, it was abundantly alive. Despite the harsh weather of the previous months, green crowned its gentle slopes. Half of the mountain property belonged to Hades. Sitting on it was a big manor built from honey-hued granite and basalt stone.
It was supposed to be turned into a resort, but Hades changed his mind, and it became the family countryside property. It was flourishing with an orchard that was well cared for. The water that was used in the orchard came from a natural spring which bubbled out of the rocks that fenced off the property.
Further up hill and behind it were the Westbrook woods, vast and wild, home to secrets and wild animals, big and small. Villagers that liked to hunt or forage for century old herbs occasionally dared to take trips inside. Most of the time, they just took what they needed from the edge.
Tucked discreetly behind an undergrowth, lay a natural reservoir. It was a key source of water and food to birds and the animals which dwelled in the forest.
Sunshine did not have to wonder why the Westbrook base had thrived. It was blessed with water from the ground, prey in the mountains. The stone houses on the property had weathered very slowly so they survived acid rain. They also stored heat better in cool climates and were cooler in hot climates.
It was the ideal place for one to set up a base. She was so glad that she had thought of it first.
Right now, it was very busy. There were around five hundred or more workers on the property currently. It looked like a very busy construction project was ongoing.
"Sir, building materials were transported here throughout the night, more men are coming so that we can get this done within a week." Dwayne paused and scratched the back of his head. "However, we cannot begin a project this massive without getting approval from the town council. This is not some small project, you want to seal off half or all of the mountain if possible. I am afraid that even the town council will refer you above."
"I have already made appointment with Westbrook town’s mayor; he is a complicated man but he owes me some favors so this should be easy. No matter what happens, just tell the men to keep constructing and only use basalt or volcanic stones. Dwayne have some engineers tag along with us." Hades slipped off his sunglasses and moved slowly closer to Sunshine.
She had been standing quietly for a while, and it puzzled him. He was expecting her to be shouting orders already.
Unlike the fool of a fiancé that she had in her past life who let her carry the weight of the apocalypse on her shoulders, Hades was quite helpful. He pitched in good ideas and even made unexpected moves to contribute to their wellbeing.
"Is this what you expected?" He asked, bracing his body upon the weight of the cane.
Sunshine hummed. "Even better, I like how serious you took my words. I like it even more that you are taking it upon yourself to make other necessary preparations." She looked at the sky and sighed happily. "Finally, I don’t have to do all the thinking, planning and fighting on my own."
Hades puffed his chest upwards. In a way, he was like a peacock that was courting. "I am very dependable."
"I can see that." She replied in an impressed voice, grinning at him. She was thinking to herself that Moon was a fool. How could she give up Hades for Cassius? With or without a lucky charm, Hades had money and means.
Hades meanwhile was smiling back at Sunshine and gently patting his chest.
Owen frowned. Nothing abnormal had been said but something was weird. "Let’s continue the tour." He said and he cleared his throat.
They resumed the walk, passing by the orchard which was colorful with a variety of fruits.
Hades pointed at them and told her, "I have already hired villagers to harvest the fruit and send it to the local fruit preservation plant factory in the area. It is all going to be turned into canned fruit."
Sunshine nodded, moving like a CEO that was being updated on the current condition of her company.
"You could have chosen another mountainous place in this country, why the Westbrook Mountains?" Hades suddenly asked something that had been on his mind for a while.
Sunshine turned around to walk backwards as she explained her reasons. "In the beginning of the apocalypse, there was a lot of confusion. Countries were destroyed, governments fell, there was no one in charge. It took a while for generalized information that could act as a guide to be compiled.
Information started to travel in the third year of the apocalypse about safe zones or green zones. Places like caves, mountains, islands, hotels turned bases which were more secure that other places.
Westbrook mountain is both a safe zone and a green zone. It is safe because it is not easy for enemies to attack without being detected and a green zone because it was impacted less by natural disasters. When the earth started to heal, it was one of the places whose land regained fertility quickly." She spun around. "Let’s head back to the cars. You need to get construction approved and the private road blocked off."
Hades changed direction and followed her, "Is it not better if we go with an island then? I mean I have one on St Margarita. No one will follow us or attack us there and having fresh water as our surroundings will not be such a bad thing." He spoke as he wobbled in an effort to catch up to her.
She noticed the wobble, so she slowed down and allowed him to catch up. "In a few days you will understand why I did not choose any island. Sell that island off as well today if you can." She advised.
"What happened? Did that water turn acidic too?" Hades asked.
They reached the car, and she opened the door but waited to enter until after she had answered his question. "Every open body of water is going to receive its fair share of acidic rain. Just sell everything like we planned Hades or else you will regret it when you lose everything."
