Chapter 18: How many would be saved?
Chapter 18: How many would be saved?
There was usually some kind of drama or gossip at the table whenever the Quinn’s met for a meal. It could be caused by internal or external factors. Ever since the Raine cousins were married into the Quinn family, they dominated every meal time conversation.
It seemed, today would be no different. Everyone was familiar with Sweet Rowena. It was the only pig on the grounds of the manor after all. She was a succulent pig, raised on the expensive foods that were left over from the meals of the Quinn’s.
Over time, the pig had developed an expensive palate.
A few times, there had been jokes made about eating the pig but nobody had ever bothered to slaughter it--no one, until Sunshine.
"This is going to be awesome." Lisha Quinn laughed, biting into a pork burger.
Warren picked up some bacon with his hands. He was among those that wished to eat Sweet Rowena, after all, a pig raised on truffles, oats and cream parfait, barley with mushrooms, apple and beet cake plus all the other luxury meals it had ingested was bound to taste amazing.
He was right, Sweet Rowena was sweet indeed.
As the Quinn’s enjoyed the pork feast, they sent furtive glances Sunshine’s way. But just like the day before, Sunshine was more interested in her plate than the things going on around her.
"Sunshine.." Rowena screamed the name as she marched back into the dining room with the fury of a hungry, angry lion. "You..."
Sunshine put a hammer on the table and glanced at her aunt. "Choose your words carefully or Sweet Rowena’s blood won’t be the only blood I see today."
Everyone froze.
"Pigs are food, not pets. Now eat." Sunshine ordered.
There were giggles around the table. Most of the teenagers found the entire thing very funny.
Rowena started sobbing and she run out of the dining room.
Dustin glared at Sunshine. "Did you have to do something like that?"
"Did you have to take one hundred million and sell me?" Sunshine fired back.
Dustin swallowed. The one hundred million was like ammunition which Sunshine could use against him at any time. And it always worked because it left him speechless.
"Cousin..." Moon started in her coquettish voice.
Fifi Quinn slapped the table and yelled. "It is just a pig, stop with the fuss. It is not as if Sunshine is wrong, pigs are not pets."
Dustin left the room to comfort his wife. Moon left to continue studying the bracelet and preparing for the apocalypse.
The rest of the breakfast was eaten in peace until a scream was heard outside. Sunshine’s lips curved upwards and she put her plate aside.
She approached Hades’s sons that were sitting together. Everyone held their breath, waiting to see if there would be something else that would cause chaos.
Sunshine unfolded her tool belt and brought out two swords. She gave one to Ariel and one to Earl. To Castiel, she gave a blade.
And then she left.
Not a single word came from her lips.
"What was that?" Warren whispered.
Rory took the swords and the blade from the children. The older boys were disappointed, they thought the swords were cool. And, they sort of liked this step mother that was not trying to please them or acting as if she was their mother.
"What was that scream?" Lisha asked Cathy.
Cathy replied in a small voice, "Suni sent Mrs. Rowena the head of Sweet Rowena as a gift."
"Oh goodness!" Rori gasped.
"Keep gasping as if you have not eaten two sweet Rowena burgers, bacon and half a burrito." Fifi scoffed at her.
Rory blushed and turned to her husband who was quick to comfort her as if she had been hurt.
Marcus Quinn, Hades’s cousin sighed. "Does Hades know how ruthless his wife is? She is the opposite of sunshine."

Two militarized vehicles tore through the trail that snarled into the Westbrook Mountains. Inside one of the two vehicles, Sunshine, Hades and Owen who was driving were engaged in a conversation.
"The roads are narrow as you can see." Owen said.
"That is not an issue, smaller paths mean lesser crowds rushing in at once. We should seal off as much of this land as we can." Sunshine responded.
Hades gazed at his wife. "What do you think of the cars? Perfect right? These are the best military vehicles on the market." A look of quiet triumph settled on his face as he took in the interior of his acquisition, the armored vehicle had been crafted from the most resilient materials.
Sunshine scoffed, one mutated cow’s crystal horn would flip this in a second. "In comparison to some of the things coming, we might as well be driving bananas. I mean it is good but I am going to have to modify all the cars that will be leaving the base for anything." She answered.
She had already made plans to dismantle some parts of the cars and repair them. She wanted cars with the best technology that could match the speed and strength of any chaos that they were to encounter.
In the apocalypse, the eighth king a.k.a. her scummy ex had been able to do it.
"And I am here to provide anything that you may need." Hades offered his services with a smile. "Dwayne, my head of security managed to gather some ex service men that are willing to work for us. They have signed NDA’s as I do not want people to start poking into what we are doing here." He paused as his gaze trailed the car that came behind them. "I plan to take them in. How many people do you plan to offer shelter?" He asked.
Owen adjusted the rear view mirror so that he could see Sunshine’s face when she answered that question. He planned on bringing his entire extended family even the dogs and cats. "Yes how many?" He echoed his boss’ question.
"It is quite unfortunate that we cannot save everybody so we will save as many as we can take on and we have to be careful such that we are not overwhelmed by the numbers." Sunshine leaned back inhaled and exhaled heavily. "You should know that the bigger the number, the harder it is to control these people."
"That is why I am hiring ex military service men, they will also act as our own private army." Hades told her.
Sunshine had no comments on what he intended to do. Anyway, an empty base was a weak base. Also, she did not own all this land on the mountain, he did.
"I wish that that we could offer shelter to my family friends and extended relatives as well." Owen sighed longingly.
Sunshine looked at the window, thinking to herself that Owen was as naive as she was. Relationships had a way of being poisoned in the apocalypse.
"Like I said Owen, not everyone can be saved. Even if you tell them, would they believe you? They would all think that you are a just another Pastor Salem believer." She answered. There is another thing to consider, how much do you trust them.
"Even though people won’t believe you Sunshine, I think there is something you can do to help. How about we print out books and guides on how to survive the apocalypse? What to do and what to avoid." Hades made a good suggestion.
The answer however depended on her. She knew more about the apocalypse than he did.
Sunshine considered his suggestion seriously. In truth, there were many good people in the world that were not deserving of death. It would not hurt to help them. Whether or not they took that information and used it would be up to them.
"We can do that I guess, as long as it does not lead back to me." She answered softly.
