Chapter 17: R.I.P. Sweet Rowena.
Hades slow walked to the bed, and he sat down. "Why mountains?"
"Fewer people, fewer problems." Sunshine withdrew her hand from outside and closed the window. "Also, cities are heavily populated so monsters from the mist liked attacking cities the most.
You can find food and fresh water in the mountains. The woods provide cover, warmth, shelter. You can use the high points to keep watch for raiders and monsters.
Think of other reasons that you can come up with. Just know that those with bases in mountains areas were...will be better off than those in houses like this that are out in the open."
She slipped up, and Hades caught it. When she was talking, she said "were" before changing it to will. From her it almost seemed as if she had lived through an apocalypse before. This very apocalypse.
So, what did it mean?
"You are asking more questions. Does it mean that you believe me now?" she asked him.
He shrugged. "I cannot say that I believe you one hundred percent, but I am willing to take a gamble. I detect no deceit in your words, and you have spent fifty-two million, three hundred thousand dollars on food. You are betting your entire life on this being true. I tend not to underestimate people that bet their entire lives on something. It is how I built my business empire; I once bet my entire life on one risky business deal."
"Then bet on me." Sunshine blurted. "If I am wrong, you will still have your money anyway. What do you have to lose?"
He laughed softly. "You are right. What do I have to lose if I cash out early?" He tapped the bed, inviting her to sit down. "Tell me, how does your cousin Moon know about the apocalypse?
Sunshine turned around, facing the window once again. She looked at her reflection and smiled at her beautiful skin. It reminded her to stock beauty products. She would have to be careful in this apocalypse so as not to end up with scars.
"Call it a shared dream or a resurrection." Again, she turned around and looked at him. "Or maybe call it a second chance. My cousin is still looking for the easy way out. Her greed will lead her to her death.
All this knowledge on the apocalypse that she is sharing with strangers will get her into trouble in future. People will want to know why she knows what she knows. They will capture her, force her to reveal what will happen.
If she cannot tell them what they want to hear, she will be tortured or killed. In an apocalypse, people are the ones to watch out for the most. They are more dangerous than any disaster." She could still recall Nimo’s head.
The image would never fade from her mind.
"You are wearing the same clothes you were in yesterday." Hades suddenly changed the topic.
Sunshine looked at herself. After returning home exhausted, she had fallen asleep without bothering to shower.
"We are heading into a time when water will be scarce. Taking baths every day, doing laundry all the time and always walking around in clean clothes will be a privilege." She tapped his shoulder as if she was an elder offering advice. "I advise you to start taking less baths and repeating clothes. Take it as a trial and start getting used to living the hard life."
She grabbed her tool belt which she had placed on the dressing table and left the bedroom. Walking past all of the servants and Quinn’s that were running inside, dripping wet, she left the manor and walked to the backyard where some of the dogs slept.
The dogs belonged to the Quinn’s but there was a nice-looking pig pen which belonged to Rowena. Inside was a healthy fat pig that belonged to her aunt. She had raised it with so much love and care, giving it more love than she gave her own niece.
The dogs were familiar with Sunshine, and they made no sound when they saw her. Most of them wagged their tails and relaxed.
The pig which was named Sweet Rowena was napping when Sunshine stumbled on it, smiled like a demon and retrieved a giant blade from her space.
With one precise strike, she beheaded it.
A guard happened to pass by, and he saw her. Blood was dripping from her face, and she was holding a gigantic knife.
He screamed loudly and fumbled for the gun around his belt, but it fell through his hands, misfiring in the process. The bullet hit a tree, but the noise attracted attention and excited the dogs.
"Relax, it’s just me, Mrs. Sunshine Quinn." She told the guard. "Bring me some water."
With the help of the chef and two guards, the pig was skinned, cleaned and taken into the kitchen.
Sunshine gave an instruction to one of the guards. "Put the head in a box, wrap a ribbon around it and send it to my aunt."
"Yes Mrs. Quinn." He answered obediently.
After that, she went back into the house, frightening the servants and Hades himself because there was so much blood on her that she looked like she had just slaughtered an entire pig pen.
"What happened to you?" he asked her.
"We are having Sweet Rowena bacon for breakfast." Sunshine replied with a smile.
With that simple answer, she finally visited the bathroom and took a bath. She came out of the bathroom in new clothes and no desire to sleep. Her body was not used to sleeping for long hours.
As she had nothing to do, she started working on that robot dog she wanted to build. She vanished right before Hades’s eyes, leaving him gob smacked. He had a strong idea about where she had vanished to.
"Huh! she did not mention that." he said to himself.
Another bonus was added to his wife. She had a space in which they could hide if things on the outside world got too dangerous.
He lacked sleep as well, so he decided to start ordering for more supplies which would be taken to Westbrook Mountain directly. Using Sunshine’s shopping list and following the quantities she had ordered, he made the same orders.
As much as his wife’s space could hold food, she was a risk factor. If she ran away or died, she would vanish with all the food. If she was in a bad mood and refused to bring out food, they would starve.
Hades liked it better when he could control things and Sunshine’s space was not something he could control. It was better to have his own emergency reserves.
Because she had talked about water becoming acidic and scarce, he contacted three water bottling companies and ordered for one hundred thousand bottles of water altogether. He figured that they would also need indoor water tanks, large enough to store water that could last them five years or at least three.
He took to the stocking task like as if it was a business deal which needed all of his attention.
Four hours later, the Quinn breakfast table was blessed with a pork feast. Bacon, patties, pork chops, burritos, pork sandwiches, pork omelets, ham, pork burgers, pork pancakes.
There was nothing else to eat but pork!
"Did we kill a pig or something?" Fifi asked in a confused voice.
"Yes, we did." Sunshine confirmed. "The one that sleeps in the backyard."
Rowena had just beaten her first bacon strip, enjoying its deliciousness. On hearing Sunshine’s words, the fork fell out of her hands, and she run outside to throw up.
And everyone at the table found themselves lost for words.
