Chapter 16: The rain came as predicted.
Sunshine was still in the garage, excited because one of the phones had rung. As soon as it did, she had gone into the space without taking any precautions to notice if someone was keeping an eye on her.
[Host, do you want to answer the phone.
Swipe right for yes and left for no.]
Sunshine swiped right. How could she swipe no?
She cleared her throat nervously, as if she was about to speak to a man that she had a crush on for the very first time. She put the earbud in her ear and opened her mouth.
"Her...hello."
"Am I speaking to a repairman?" man’s voice came from the other end of the phone.
"Yes."
"Can you accept a job right now?"
"Yes." she answered.
The caller ended the call immediately.
The task appeared in the air. It was to reattach a robotic leg on a search and rescue dog.
Sunshine’s eyes widened. A robot dog! It sounded cool, something that she would love to own.
"System what tools will I need?"
[Artificial muscle fibers, adaptive paws and claws, magnetic rotating joints, silk lubricant and a graphene rod. All these items can be acquired in the system repair shop.]
"This should be easy then." Her finger pointed at the virtual screen on which the system had presented a selection of the things she would use. She had to spend points to acquire them.
A total of seventy points altogether were spent which left her with 610 points.
"Send in the patient." She told the system.
There was a shimmer near her feet and then the dog appeared. It was not what she had been expecting. She had a assumed a robot dog would look like a robot. But, it looked like a normal dog. A golden retriever with floppy ears, golden fur and a shaggy tail.
"Hey there, aren’t you a cutie." Sunshine patted the dog’s head and held her hand out, asking for a paw shake.
"Just fix me up I want to go home," Answered the dog.
Her eyes widened and she gasped, stepping back away from it. "A talking dog! this is awesome."
"Hooray," it said in a dull voice.
"And it is sassy. System, can I keep him?" She asked excitedly, forgetting that the dog had an owner.
What she was thinking was that a dog like this would surely come in handy at the base. It could scout ahead and she would not have to worry about people eating it.
Oh yes, in the apocalypse, people were eating the dogs and cats!
The dog’s paw slammed into her side, sending her to the ground. She landed on her butt. "No you cannot keep me, as a universal repairman, it is against your ethics to forcibly posses the property of your client. I am an honorable service dog, not a house pet." It spoke turning the other side making sure to proudly raise it’s chin.
"I was kidding, I do not want you either." Sunshine scoffed.
"System, do you offer a simulation so that I can watch and learn from someone else before attempting it?"
[Ten points per lesson.]
"Do it."
Suddenly, something seized her mind and she found herself inside the memory of someone else--someone that had repaired a robot dog leg before.
Using that memory and the universal manual provided by the space, she carefully repaired the dog’s leg, very slowly to avoid making errors.
After an hour it was jumping happily and running around. For a proud dog, it wagged its tail very enthusiastically.
"I am all good now." It was suddenly friendly and even licked Sunshine on the hand before vanishing.
[Task completed: Robotic leg repaired
Points awarded: 140
Payment made : 20 gold bars.
Skill Acquired : Animal language adaptability.]
"Wait, the client paid 40 gold bars. Why am I getting twenty?"
"Host, you must pay the middleman."
Sunshine sighed. The system should have given her the terms and conditions before she started working. But anyway, half a loaf was better than nothing. Also, with the knowledge she had gained, she was 40% certain that she could build her own robot dog.
She decided to check her stats and see if anything had changed.

A few things had changed. She was glad to see an increase in her intelligence and her repair success rate. It would help her get more clients.
Sunshine stretched her arms upwards, she was tired for the day had been long and full of activity. She had missed dinner while repairing the robot dog leg. Most residents had gone to sleep but some were watching television in the living room.
She sneaked into the bedroom like a thief entering a room that was not hers. To collaborate better with her husband, she needed to be in close quarters with him. But there was one complication. Was she supposed to share a bed with Hades?
There state of the room answered that question, it seemed like Hades was also uncomfortable with that and he had ordered for a sleeper sofa for her. A scoff came from Sunshine when she heard him snore softly.
"What kind of man cannot sacrifice the bed for his wife." She muttered.
She let out a weary sigh and fell onto the sleeper sofa, her lips curled into a bashful smile the moment she felt the bed’s unexpected softness. This was luxury compared to the hard floors and trees that she was used to sleeping in.
That night as Sunshine slept, the soothing sound of rain whispering against the windows only deepened the comfort of her rest.
But, at around 3:00 a.m., she opened her eyes as her ears heard a sound that was expected and yet dreadful enough to cause her heart to pace wildly.
Rain!!
She jolted awake fully. It was beginning of the end of the world. Her eyes squeezed shut, her body trembled as if it lacked sugar. Yes, she knew what was to come but part of her had been hoping that it was all a dream.
"You were right about the rain." Hades’ voice startled her.
He was awake as well, standing by the window and watching the rain drops slide down the glass. "It started raining as early as 10 p.m. and the news is already covering it. Everyone is excited about this, the government is bragging that it managed to break the endless drought streak.
Pastor Salem is also on the news. He is being praised for his spot on revelation about this unexpected rain and the exact time when it would start falling. He is claiming that in two weeks the rain will become acidic and only the chosen will survive. He is encouraging those who want to survive to donate money and supplies to his church and he will take them to heaven." He run a hand through his air.
Sunshine hissed. "That quack! Faith is very dangerous, once it sticks there is no going back. His followers will die while he flourishes during the apocalypse. It must have been Moon that told him about the rain and the apocalypse. I don’t know why he believed her." She moved to the window close to where he had was standing.
Her gaze fell on the people that lived on the grounds of the manor dancing and playing in the rain. Sunshine opened the window and held out her hand, welcoming the rain’s tender touch.
"What else should I do, apart from selling off the Quinn empire?" Hades asked, his voice more serious than ever.
If the apocalypse was coming, the only prized possession that he had was his wife’s knowledge. To take it for granted would be foolish.
Sunshine met his gaze. "We need a base, an impregnable source of safety. And fresh water, lots of it. It will be five years before outside water will be safe for drinking again."
