Chapter 15: Which cousin was foolish?

Sunshine could see the wheels in Moon’s brain turning. Her greed could not be hidden; the same way a starving cat could not hide its burning desire for fish.

Here it comes, she thought.

Moon licked her bottom lip, "Cousin, that bracelet on your arm, please give it to me. I have always thought that it was cute."

Moon was practically salivating, which Sunshine found ridiculous as her cousin did not even know what the true secret of the bracelet was.

"This old thing?" Sunshine raised her hand lazily like as if it was boneless. "Cousin Moon, I cannot just give it away. It means a lot to me because it was a gift from my mother, and it was passed on to her by her father. I had never realized how old it had grown until now." She removed the bracelet and allowed it to dangle loosely in between her fingers.

Moon lunged out, attempting to grab it. Sunshine drew her hand back, keeping it out of Moon’s reach. "Cousin, you are a little too eager. Do you love my bracelet that much?"

Moon nodded eagerly.

For a moment, Sunshine pretended to think. Seconds ticked, Moon held her breath, tension rose.

Finally, Sunshine broke it. "Well, I could sell it to you." She said with hesitation like it was taking her great pains to even suggest such a thing.

"Name your price, I will pay." Moon eagerly jumped at it.

Sunshine tilted her head and nodded. Her gaze conveyed to Moon that she knew exactly what she wanted in exchange for the bracelet, it was the money that she had got from the lottery ticket.

It took a moment, but Moon figured it out. "The money from the lottery ticket."

Sunshine put the bracelet back around her wrist. "Bingo!"

Moon got her phone from the pocket of her jeans. Her hands were trembling, and her heart was defiant. "Cousin I..."

"Maybe I shouldn’t sell." Sunshine winced.

Moon could not have Sunshine changing her mind. "I will give you half of it right now."

Sneering as if she was watching a comedy, Sunshine said, "I guess that you do not want it as much as you say you do, I was told by my mother that it’s a lucky charm of sorts although personally I have not seen it in action just yet." She lied with ease. "I should pass it on to one of my stepchildren. A stepmother is also a mother after all, and I have not given them any meeting gifts yet."

She raised the bracelet up and smiled. "Which of them do you think will like it more?"

Inhaling deeply in defeat, Moon’s fingers flew over her phone and within seconds, she transferred the full amount. Sunshine’s phone lit up with a payment notification.

She took a look at it first and her jaw nearly dropped because Moon had sent the full amount.

"Now that is a good girl." Sunshine let out a triumphant laugh.

In one fluid motion, Moon plucked the bracelet out of her Sunshine’s fingers. "If I knew that all it would take for you to hand this over was that stupid money then I would have done so long time ago." A smug smile tugged on her lips.

She thought that Sunshine had no idea what she had just lost, now that she had the bracelet, she would get all the luck that Cassius got in the past life. She would not have to rely on anyone in the apocalypse.

She would build her own base and be the apocalypse queen instead of Sunshine. In their last life, she had not awakened any superpower while Sunshine had done so. With a lucky charm, Moon was certain that she would awaken a superpower this time round.

She gave Sunshine a look of contempt, thinking that her cousin was a fool. Not only had she given up the lucky charm, but she had also been paid with her own money. In the end, she had gained any benefits. As for the money Moon was sure that her mother and father would find a way to make Sunshine give it back.

Without saying another word, Moon gave her cousin a fleeting glance, let out a dry laugh, got out of the car and strode off with great pride in her steps.

Once she once out of sight, Sunshine burst into laughter that she had been stifling. She laughed so much and so hard that tears spilled from her eyes. "If only she knew that the bracelet was just for decoration and nothing else." She said through giggles.

Sunshine slapped the steering wheel and laughed some more in a way that she had not laughed for so many years.

Inside the house specifically their bedroom, Owen was giving Hades another update, specifically that his wife was back. He also mentioned that she was having a private conversation with her sister in the car.

"Is it civil or are they pulling each other’s hair." Hades asked.

Owen resisted the urge to smile as he imagined that scenario. He shook his head lightly. "The former sir."

"Got it, you can retire for the night." Hades told him.

Owen chewed on his lower lip and remained static even though he had been dismissed.

"What is it? Is there something that you want to discuss with me?" Hades folded the day’s paper and stared at his assistant.

Owen fidgeted with his fingers. "Sir I want to make a request, if truly there is an apocalypse coming then please save my family. Or ask Miss...Mrs...Sunshine to do it. I would like to follow you to Westbrook Mountain." The words fumbled out of him.

"I am not in charge of who my wife saves or recruits, but I would never leave you behind Owen. After everything that you have tolerated with me, the least I can do is provide food and safe shelter to your family. Besides, just because there is an apocalypse does not mean that I am firing you.

Send your family there ahead of time and some workers as well so that they can reinforce the property. They should build a high wall and start gathering supplies on the ground. Find Dwayne and tell him to find some retired soldiers, those that are willing to move to Westbrook with their families. Recruit them all." Hades answered, then dismissed Owen once again.

He picked up his phone from the side table and connected to a dark website where illegal weapons were sold in plenty. Getting such dangerous items legally would be a problem because the authorities would be notified, it would be suspicious to buy such large amounts of weapons when you are not planning some kind of attack.

Hades had already purchased as many guns as he could legally. But he thought they were not enough.

He did not just purchase lethal weapons but non-lethal ones as well that he could give to the children to protect themselves.

He ordered for pepper spray, laser guns, smoke grenades, shields plus riot gear, protective eye wear, tactical gloves and night vision equipment.

When he was finished, he laid in bed as he was still pretending to be paralyzed. He waited for Sunshine to come to their bedroom, but she never did.
