Chapter 10: One a coincidence...two...maybe not.
Chapter 10: One a coincidence...two...maybe not.
Hades Quinn was a shrewd man. To grow his business empire, he had taken many risks, survived many assassination attempts, skipped many meals and even said prayed many prayers and made many wishes at his most desperate moments.
To stay ahead of his competitors, he took all information to be important, no matter how small it was. It was why he investigated everything as if it was a specimen under a microscope and only when he was satisfied, did he make a decision.
Sunshine’s claim was extraordinary, her powers even more so. A wise businessman knew not to put all of his eggs in one basket. If what she said was false, all he would risk was losing a little money that could always be made back.
If she was right and he did not act in time....it was not just his life at risk, his parents, his sons and all of his family would be doomed. So, he put aside his prejudices and decided to listen. Knowledge in the end was power. "Tell me more on the apocalypse that you think is coming."
Sunshine did not like how he made it sound like it was all in her head. But, if she were in his shoes, she would have kicked him out already for spouting nonsense about an apocalypse without any evidence.
She was only a believer because she had experienced it.
"Your company is one of the investors in the government’s projects on climate mitigation. Am I correct?"
Moving his head up and down, Hades agreed with her. "It is true that I am funding some of the international united government projects to provide relief to the masses of suffering people affected by the unnaturally hot weather conditions.
But these experiments are not being done on earth, they are being carried out on Mars. I have been told that scientists are looking into a way of controlling the weather manually. Are you saying that this is what is going to cause the apocalypse?"
Sunshine nodded. "It is already too late. The disasters have already begun, and they will only get worse. Starting tomorrow, it is going to drizzle. Everyone will rejoice because they have been longing for the rain. But after two weeks, the clouds will turn red, and the rain will turn into acid rain.
It will corrode, burn and mutate people, plants and animals. After three months, the rain will stop and....." She sighed. "I don’t have time to take you through what is coming bit by bit. We can discuss that another time."
Hades looked around for his phone. "If what you say is true, we need to report this to the right people and...."
"And who would believe you?" She jumped in. "You do not believe me so do you think others will believe you? Even if you ask for an updated report on this research that you fund, you will be given a deducted one. There is no time to waste, you are better off selling everything that you own and cashing out while there is still time."
Hades lurched to his feet. "W-what? Everything? Do you know how hard I have worked."
"Money in the bank will not matter anymore and when banks cannot print cash, gold, silver and copper will become the most used currency. The world is going to regress; people will be selling their children and loved ones for food.
Some will even eat them in cases of extreme hunger. This 180 million for which you are faking paralysis, it won’t matter. The sick and weak will not survive, not unless they have strong people looking out for them.
If you sell your company now, you can get enough money to acquire supplies. In an apocalypse, supplies mean strength and strength means that you get to keep your life and that of your loved ones.
My parents are dead, and my aunt and uncle sold me. I don’t have loved ones to protect but you do. I am confident in surviving the apocalypse on my own. My only weakness is the lack of enough funds or access to enough weapons. If it were not for this, I would not be talking to you right now." She stood up, feeling as if she had said all she had to say.
She had warned him. That was enough for now. She had a black card to use for shopping and not a lot of time to waste.
When she left the room, she went straight to the garage and drove out.
Meanwhile, in the bedroom, Owen entered through the window and stood by Hades’s bed.
"Did you overhear our conversation?" Hades asked him.
Owen nodded. "Every word."
"What do you think of what she said?" Hades asked, interlocking his fingers and moving them as if they were butterfly wings. It was something that he did when he was thinking.
Owen tilted his head to the right and shook it slowly. "I cannot judge accurately sir. It is true that the weather has been getting unnaturally hotter. My sister Julia has a pair of plastic slippers which she claimed melted in the sun. I of course think her dog ate them.
I don’t know if this is relevant to what your wife has shared but there have been some weird things going on with the Raine’s in the last three days.
Miss Moon Raine woke up from her sleep and she apparently started eating like a starving ghost. According to the maids, she vomited, washed her mouth and continued to eat as if she had not eaten for so many years.
They also said she was very excited to see fresh water. Since then, she has been stealing food and all kinds of supplies from the house. I have a list."
He handed a list of the things Moon had stolen to stolen.
"No perishables." Hades noted.
"Only things that can be stocked over a long time." Owen confirmed. "She quit her job, sold most of her fancy jewelry and bought more food supplies, medicine, jackets, boots and she even put in an order a steel factory for weapons like arrows. I have heard that she is trying to buy guns, which is why she joined Pastor Salem’s church."
"The doomsday prophet!" Roland exclaimed.
Owen nodded. "Miss Moon won a lottery which I have found out was false. The Mrs...your wife Sunshine was the original owner of the winning ticket. Miss Moon claimed the prize and she has purchased an RV, more food supplies and land in the Rainhounds mountain village."
"A mountain area just as Sunshine asked me for land in Westbrook Mountain. So, it seems both cousins seem to be aware of this apocalypse knowledge somehow."
Owen shrugged. "Considering the bad state of their relationship, I don’t think that they would help each other so maybe they got the information from different sources or the same source at different times. Oh...and Miss Moon is looking for a bracelet that is owned by your wife. One of the guards said that he overheard a conversation between Rowena Raine and Moon in which Moon said the bracelet was special."
Hades fingers started dancing again. His mind was drawing a picture, but the picture was not clear just yet.
"Keep digging into the activities of both sisters. Find out why Moon insisted on marrying Cassius..." Hades got up to visit the bathroom. "Bring me some food. And if it drizzles tomorrow, put together a list of our competitors that have been trying to acquire subsidiaries of Quinn group."
Owen was surprised. "You believe what Miss..Mrs.. your wife said." He was still struggling with the right way of addressing Sunshine.
"One can be a coincidence but two...." Hades shook his head. "If two enemies are doing the same thing then they are either copying each other...or they have discovered a secret you haven’t yet."
