Chapter 9: Let’s make a deal.

Sunshine stood up and walked the half empty bowl of porridge to the table. Then, she looked at Hades, laughing dryly without emotion.

Gawking at his seemingly amused wife, Hades wondered what was making her laugh. Was treating him like an infant amusing?

Was taking care of helpless people her hobby?

"You don’t need to do this again." He told her. "There are professionals that have been hired to take care of me. I told you; I expect nothing from you. I may be paralyzed..."

"You..." She pointed at him. "Shush!!"

Hades’s mouth fell open slightly. He was so agitated that he nearly sat up to face her on level ground. He could not remember the last time he had been told to "shush" by anyone. Even the powerful politicians were afraid to meet his eyes.

This twenty-four-year-old wife of his apparently had no such problems.

Was this what they called stupid bravery?

"Mr. Quinn sit up straight." She told him.

From the sound of her voice, she was commanding him, not begging, not suggesting--commanding.

Sunshine took her hammer from the tool belt and placed it on the bed. "I know that you can sit on your own and you can also walk. Unless you want me to prove it by taking a hammer to your knee, sit up."

She had carried a fake fool in one apocalypse. She would not be carrying a fake quadriplegic in another one.

Hades stiffened, stunned that she knew his closely guarded secret. How? Who had betrayed him? Only Doctor Friedman and Owen knew the truth and they would never betray him.

So, that left him. What had given him away? Had something happened on the night that she was drugged and put in his bed?

She picked up the hammer and brought it down with great might.

He sat up quickly and caught her hand before she could break his knee and turn his fake act into a real one. Looking into her eyes, he noticed that she was actually serious about it. And there was something in those eyes that told him she was not new to bloodshed.

Hades was sure that he was imagining it. Maybe she had just lost her mind. Wasn’t she Sunshine? Always smiling and always sweet? When did she become dangerous?

"Are you crazy?" He barked at her.

"Yes." She answered. "So, you better not play games with me. I hate liars the most." She pulled her hands back and put the hammer away.

Her goal had been accomplished anyway, and he was sitting upright.

Hades’s heart settled slowly. It seemed, Owen had missed out on some very important details when he was looking into Sunshine. They would need to do a deeper background check into her.

"How did you know? Truth only." He stretched and shifted into a more comfortable position.

Sunshine crossed one leg over the other and crossed her arms across her chest. "I will ask the questions here Mr. Quinn...."

"Hades." He chimed in. "Call me Hades, even if this is not a normal marriage at least we can be cordial."

With a single nod, Sunshine agreed. "Alright Hades, what is going on with you? Your mother is worried sick, and you know that she is fragile. Why are you playing pretend?"

Hades wanted to test her, so he revealed the truth. "Believe me I thought long and hard about this before going through with it. Someone is siphoning money from my company into a ghost account. I have lost one hundred eighty million dollars at least. When the external auditor revealed this to me, I could hardly believe it.

I have been digging for information for a while, but the culprit is very clever and hard to pin down. I have escaped two assassination attempts since I started investigating. So, I staged the accident hoping that whoever this person is will take advantage of my absence and do something stupid that will help me catch them but nothing so far."

Sunshine let out a sound that showed that she understood his reasons. "Okay your secret is safe with me and since we are talking about secrets, I have one of my own that you should know about since I need your help." Her voice was very direct as she cut to the chase.

She had already thought long and hard about what to and all roads led her to the same conclusion.

Hades creased his brow, wondering what kind of secret she was keeping. He liked it best when he knew the secrets of others and had the upper hand.

"My help? What do you need help with?" He asked.

"Money, weapons and property on the land which you own in Westbrook Mountain village. An apocalypse is coming; the world is going to change. There are twenty-nine days left, and time is of the essence. I don’t have time to look for help elsewhere. The way I see things, you and I can partner up." The words rolled out of Sunshine’s mouth with ease.

Barking a laugh, Hades stared at her like had sprouted a second head. There was one thing his mother had forgotten to mention when she was praising Sunshine was that she was already nuts after spending too much time with Cassius.

"You don’t have to tell me your secret just because you know mine. You also don’t need to make up ridiculous stories." He told her. "I have already promised you that I will give you a divorce and I will compensate you..."

Sunshine waved her hand and some of the things in the room vanished. In fact, she took everything but the bed he was sitting on, into the space.

"What the hell?" Hades whispered.

Sunshine waved her hand, and the things re-appeared.

"Do you need me to do it again?" she asked.

He nodded.

She made everything disappear and re-appear again.

Hades rubbed her eyes to make sure that he was not hallucinating and what he was seeing was real. It was either he was hallucinating, or his wife had superpowers.

"You don’t need to look so amazed, in two months times, or even less there will be other people like me. People that will awaken their superpowers and rise to the top of humanity’s chain. I just awakened early due to some circumstances that I am not willing to share."

She moved closer to him on the bed and looked into his eyes. "I am telling you the truth and you can choose to believe it or not. An apocalypse is coming. Not zombies but natural disasters, a terrible mist and monsters lurking in the mist.

All the wealth you have, it will be useless. I don’t have to tell you how important food, water, medicine, weapons and other supplies will be at the time.

I have grown up on the grounds of this manor, my character is trustworthy. You have resources, I have knowledge on what is coming and a superpower which will ensure that we don’t starve in the next five years. Our union is perfect. What do you say?"
