Chapter 76: Chapter 76: Not All Survivors Are Fighters

Inside the villa that Liora and her group had once considered staying in, the air was filled with tension and the sharp stench of blood. The survivors who had occupied the place unfortunately weren’t strong fighters like other groups.

They were ordinary people, with a few low-level awakeners, who had survived more through luck than strength, and now, luck seemed to be slipping from their fingers.

"Block the damn door, quickly!" a voice hissed through clenched teeth.

They had dragged two heavy wardrobes, a desk, and several chairs against the main door of the room on the first floor. Sweat dripped from their foreheads, and their hands trembled with every movement.

The groans and wails of the zombies outside made it more difficult for them. They were filled with terror, not knowing when they would be suddenly ambushed by a wave of zombies.

They could only hope that the door would not betray them and could hold the frenzied zombies outside, who had become more savage and bloodthirsty.

Han Xiu clutched his bleeding arm, his body slumped in the corner of the room. His shirt was soaked in sweat, and his wound had turned into a shade of angry red. He was the reason they had rushed inside this room.

The moment they realized they couldn’t outrun the horde anymore, they locked the door and didn’t dare open it again.

"Are they still out there?" Zhang Wei asked with a shaky voice as he peeked through the narrow crack in the window’s curtain.

Xu Mei pulled him back immediately. "Don’t let them see you! If they see movement—if they see any movement, they’ll come here!"

But what they did not know, even though they tried to be as silent as possible, was that the scent of human flesh could not be hidden at all.

"But they’re already everywhere," Lin Na whispered, her voice barely audible over the noise of the growling zombies outside. Her face was pale and stained with tears, her lips cracked, and her fingers gripping the hem of her shirt so tightly her knuckles turned white.

Outside, the street had become a nightmare. Zombies clogged the roads and lawns, staggering, crawling, pushing each other forward. There wasn’t a single inch of land left untouched. The sound of moaning, snarling, and limbs dragging over concrete filled the air like a never-ending funeral song.

With each sound made by the zombies, their hearts would jump to their throats, and they felt like the door would soon be kicked by zombies and then all would have to face death and maybe become one of them. The thought alone was enough to make them churn.

No one wanted to die and definitely did not want to become a mindless zombie. If considered, they would rather die a peaceful death than be torn apart by zombies with their eyes wide open. But who had the guts to take their own life... probably no one, because everyone wished that maybe there would be hope to survive and maybe the zombies would not tear them apart.

"They weren’t like this before," murmured Sun Tao. He sat against the wall, his right leg wrapped in a torn piece of curtain. Blood had already soaked through. His eyes were blank and staring ahead, but his voice was trembling with fear.

"These... these ones feel different, like they have completely lost their sanity and would not wait before getting their fill." It’s not like the zombies were actually sane, but now they would not let them go after spotting them. Before tonight, it was not like this. They would always scatter once they lost sight of their prey. But now, they were hell-bent on catching them. Just what is going on?

"I even saw one rip a dog apart with one hand and eat its brain," he continued with a terrorized voice filled with disbelief.

Till today, only humans had mutated. The animals and plants were still the same. There had been no difference occurring in them. But their survival had also decreased severely, and spotting an animal or plant was very rare. They had also felt the changes in the environment, and growing plants and crops had almost become impossible.

And animals and cattle had simply become zombie food. There was no one to care for them. When one could not save themselves, how could they guarantee their pet’s well-being?

Qin Hao slid down next to the barricaded door, his breath coming in short bursts. "I—I thought this house would be safe. I thought we’d rest here a few days. But now we can’t even leave the room... We’re stuck."

No one answered. The truth was, they were all thinking the same thing.

"We shouldn’t have come back," An Ran finally said. Her voice was bitter. "That group... the one with that girl and the guy who came earlier. They must have known something. That’s why they left. We were the stupid ones. We stayed here."

"We didn’t have a choice," Lin Na whispered. "Han Xiu was already bitten. We couldn’t move him far."

A soft groan came from Han Xiu’s corner. He was still conscious, but his fever had spiked. His forehead was burning, and his lips were mumbling nonsense now. They didn’t dare speak the fear out loud, but everyone in the room knew what it meant.

"We’ll wait it out," Zhang Wei said, trying to sound hopeful. "They’ll leave eventually... right?"

But no one replied.

An Ran peeked outside the window to only find the crowd of zombies had only increased, along with their wailing sounds. She looked at her friends with sorrow, her lips moving, but no words came out.

They all heard it—the endless chorus of growls, the pounding of zombie limbs against walls and cars. The zombies didn’t seem to be dispersing. If anything, the numbers were increasing.

Sun Tao’s head dropped against the wall. His eyes were bloodshot, and his lips quivered. "If they start climbing walls... we’re dead."

Now, they were on the first floor. Although they had blocked the door with every possible means, the window was still open with only a curtain covering it—without any protection at all. The glass on the frame of the window was barely hanging, with many scattered areas.

So if zombies decided to use the window to come and attack them, then they would perish without even struggling. A chill ran down their spines at the mere thought of this.

But what they forget is, today is not their lucky day at all.
