Chapter 41: Chapter 41: The Price of Endurance
"Liora," Zhou Yinuo’s gentle voice broke through her thoughts. "Don’t."
Liora turned her head, and Zhou Yinuo shook her head slightly. "It won’t do us any good," she said quietly, her voice barely above a whisper. "They have power in the base. If you offend them, our lives will only get worse."
Zhou Yinuo could guess that Liora’s temper was already very short, and she was not used to doing any labor. Even she could feel that the base officers were deliberately creating trouble for them. She was starting to feel a little bit of anger herself, and so was Liora. But she couldn’t allow her to be reckless.
Liora exhaled slowly, forcing herself to calm down. Fine. Fine. She could endure this. But only for now.
She shoved her anger down and turned to look at Chen Wei and Liang Zihan, who were just as exhausted. Their clothes were drenched in sweat, their hands covered in dust from handling the boxes, yet they had not uttered a single complaint. They had just silently done the work, as if this was their fate.
It made Liora sick. Sick to the core.
But it was finally over. The supplies were packed. They were done.
She turned away from the scene of the two freeloaders and stepped forward, ready to climb onto the truck bed for the ride back.
But just as she reached out to grab onto the truck—
"You all can walk," Commander Xu’s voice rang out, casual, like he was tossing away a piece of trash.
Liora froze mid-step.
Slowly, she turned her head, eyes narrowing. "What?"
Commander Xu wasn’t even looking at her. He was leaning back against the truck, arms crossed, chewing the last of his energy bar. "You heard me," he said lazily. "There’s no space. You can all walk back."
For a moment, there was absolute silence.
Then the truck engine roared to life.
Liora’s jaw dropped as the vehicle suddenly jerked forward.
"Wait—!"
But before they could react, the truck sped off, kicking up a thick cloud of dust in its wake.
The dust hit them like a slap to the face. Liora coughed, stumbling back as the dry, gritty dirt filled her nose and mouth.
When the dust finally settled, she slowly lifted her head. The truck was already a distant speck on the road, growing smaller by the second.
Zhou Yinuo wiped at her face, trying to shake off the dirt. Liang Zihan let out a sharp, bitter laugh of disbelief. Chen Wei stared ahead blankly, as if his brain had momentarily shut down from sheer exhaustion and shock.
Liora, on the other hand, was completely still.
The air around her was almost... eerily quiet.
Her fingers twitched. Her jaw tightened with uncontrollable anger.
Zhou Yinuo, still trying to clear dust from her eyes, suddenly felt a very dangerous aura beside her.
Slowly, she turned her head and saw Liora standing there, frozen in place, fists clenched so tightly that her knuckles were turning white. A vein pulsed at her temple.
"L-Liora...?"
Liora inhaled deeply, very deeply, like she was trying to keep herself from committing a crime.
"Tell me," she said, her voice calm—too calm. "Are you absolutely sure I shouldn’t have smashed a box on his head?"
Zhou Yinuo hesitated. Then, after a long pause, she coughed lightly and mumbled, "...Maybe just a small one?"
Liora exhaled through her nose, rubbing her temples. No. Not now. Not here. But one day—oh, one day—she was flipping that damn truck over with her bare hands.
Behind her, Liang Zihan kicked at the dirt with a groan. "Can’t believe we just did all that hard work and got treated like unpaid labor."
Chen Wei stretched, rolling his shoulders. "Next time, remind me to pretend I broke a leg."
Zhou Yinuo patted her dust-covered clothes, sighing. "At least we won’t have to listen to them talk on the way back?"
Liora let out a bitter laugh. "Oh, trust me, the only thing keeping me sane right now is imagining all the ways I’m going to get my revenge."
"Fuck, man. Fucking old coot. Just remember, one day, if I don’t bury you in the ground, then I will forget my name is Liora," Liora said through gritted teeth, making the trio break into a cold sweat. She vowed in her heart that it was a promise from a princess, and she was not someone who would forget it.
Liora walked inside the supermarket and grabbed a neatly hidden bag inside the warehouse. It was Chen Wei’s bag. But for now, it was officially hers. He decided to give it to me, she told herself.
She opened it to reveal water bottles, some necessities, and food that they had hoarded from the warehouse before the officers arrived.
Liora was right. If she had not done that, then maybe they wouldn’t even have an energy bar left, as those greedy bastards would never allow them to keep anything.
And she had also taken this bag so she could store items from her space. She did not know whether they were aware of her space ability or not, but it was pretty obvious.
Or maybe they had never even heard about space users. Because in her opinion (or rather, the system’s opinion), space users were very rare, and the chances of encountering them were slim.
Whatever the case, it was better that they did not ask her outright. She did not give a fuck whether they knew or not. Because if they decided to betray her, she would make sure they did not survive to wake up the next day.
Liora unscrewed one of the water bottles and started gulping it down at a constant speed, not even pausing to take a breath.
This was the scene the trio found her in—gulping down large amounts of water all by herself. They wanted to stop her but didn’t have the heart to, knowing she had been wronged today.
And they were equally responsible. Because for them, Liora had controlled her anger. They were very thankful for it and could not ask for more.
